One more day of class, 12 more days in the states, 5 days until my birthday...talk about excited!
Finally gave up on waiting for the P990i and blew my money on a new cam and sunglasses.
miss uk, whats the weather like out your way? what sort of clothing should i bring?
Posted by Miss UK
Bring jeans and t-shirts and the odd jumper to be safe, weathers so unpredictable but it has been kinda warm last few days, was down Worcester yesty it was hotter there than at home. P990i so its really been delayed again pffft lol
Posted by himomer
Thanks, I think I will pack Monday so I can relax for a week.
SE's Eshop has changed the date from JUN to AUG so that may mean mid to late July cause M600 and K800 say JUL.
Anyone know anything about networks in South America. Chile is the only country in the Americas that is officially getting the P990, which seems odd to me.
its 1am so nite!

WiMAX trial
BellSouth and Alcatel announced today an agreement to trial Alcatel's Evolium WiMAX solution in the BellSouth lab. This agreement comes four months after Alcatel conducted the industry's first live demonstration of the newly ratified WiMAX IEEE 802.16e-2005 standard.
BellSouth, the first major telecom provider to commercially launch wireless broadband using pre-WiMAX technology in the U.S., will begin lab trials next quarter based on Alcatel's standards-based universal WiMAX solution (IEEE 802.16e-2005). The trials will be conducted in the 2.3 GHz WCS spectrum.
"BellSouth continues to pave the way in wireless broadband," said Paulino Barros, chief product officer BellSouth Retail Markets. "We are committed to increasing our broadband coverage. We look forward to working with Alcatel to assess the viability of offering a simple and seamless WiMAX solution that will extend broadband even further into our network."
In addition to its active role in the WiMAX Forum, Alcatel has been broadening the WiMAX ecosystem over the past year by cooperating with leading trendsetters to define reference usage profiles and conduct interoperability testing. With the WiMAX IEEE 802.16e-2005 standard now ratified, carriers are eager to move to the next stage of market validation so as to take advantage of its unique cost, coverage and performance benefits. Alcatel's cost- efficient, high-performance Evolium WiMAX infrastructure is a truly universal broadband wireless access solution, natively supporting fixed, nomadic and mobile usage.
"Alcatel believes that broadband wireless access technology offers important strategic value to carriers looking to deliver the high-speed, high- quality services that their customers expect wherever they are," said Hubert de Pesquidoux, Executive Vice President and President of Alcatel's North American activities. "This trial with BellSouth is a significant indication that our customers agree universal WiMAX is ready for the market, and the market is ready for universal WiMAX."
WiMAX is a new broadband wireless access technology that enables connectivity through wireless networks for fixed, nomadic or mobile use in urban, suburban and rural areas. The technology offers a cost-effective broadband access alternative where DSL is unavailable for technical or economical reasons, or a last-mile alternative to unbundling for operators who are offering a combination of voice and broadband access offers to the next generation of wireless devices. The 802.16e-2005 WiMAX standard is in fact a more advanced successor to 802.16d-2004 (called "Static WiMAX," or Revision d), and offers superior performance and flexibility in pure fixed deployment scenarios.
The Alcatel Evolium WiMAX solution will be shown in the Alcatel booth at the WCA conference June 27 through 30 in Washington DC.

Cellfire Launches Free Mobule Coupon Service Nationwide
Cellfire announced today that its free mobile coupon service is now available to cell phone users across the country. Household-name retailers such as T.G.I. Friday's and Hollywood Video are among the partners deploying the money-saving solution to consumers.
"Cellfire is the first-ever mobile application that allows consumers to save money at their favorite stores, restaurants and entertainment venues," said Brent Dusing, CEO of Cellfire. "Since our regional launch in December, we are seeing remarkable growth in both the number of users and retailers who are excited about embracing this easy-to-use solution."
"There's been talk for years about integrating location with mobile commerce allowing cell phone subscribers to directly benefit from discounts and promotions at the stores they most often visit," said J. Gerry Purdy, Ph.D., principal analyst with MobileTrax. "Now, Cellfire offers cell phone subscribers the ability to opt-in to promotional programs that provide instant, brand-name coupons in many retail store locations."
Cellfire is a free downloadable application that provides valuable coupons from a host of local and national retailers within the user's geographic region. To browse current offers, consumers click on their phone's Cellfire icon and scroll to the discount of their choice. To redeem the coupon they simply press "Use Now" and show the coupon to the cashier. Because the application resides on the handset it eliminates the need to connect to the Internet during the transaction, allowing for quick checkout times.
Current deals include rent-one-get-one-free from Hollywood Video, a free appetizer at T.G.I. Friday's, as well as numerous discounts from retailers such as 1-800-flowers.com, Carlson Travel and other local retailers.
To get Cellfire, consumers can simply go to www.cellfire.com, text to 22888 from their phones, go to HelloMoto, search "Coupons" from Cingular MEdiaNet or use various other mobile content channels.
Today's news comes after the highly successful beta launch of the service to California customers of wireless carrier Cingular Wireless. Cellfire selected California for the preliminary testing due to several factors: One-tenth of the U.S. population resides in California; the state's tech-intensive economy; and the fact that it is the 5th largest economy in the world.

More coupons if definitely what the average American needs. I doubt that that will catch on. There is a limit with what you want to be able to do with your phone.

First 3.2 Mega Fixel Camera Phone in US Launched
Samsung Telecommunications America (Samsung) and Verizon Wireless set a new standard for mobile camera phones today with the availability of the SCH-a990, the first 3.2 mega pixel digital camera phone available to Verizon Wireless customers. The SCH-a990 enables photo enthusiasts to take high-resolution photos of a similar print quality as a standalone digital camera. In addition, the SCH-a990 boasts a number of media features, including video recording capabilities, V CAST to view video and V CAST Music to download music directly to the phone and Bluetooth(R) wireless technology, to allow a customer to print pictures wirelessly from the SCH-a990 to a Bluetooth-enabled printer basic print profile.
The SCH-a990 has a unique design that looks first like a phone and then, when the screen is rotated 180 degrees, like a camera. This innovative design, along with the high resolution and features such as a flash and in-camera photo editing software, make the SCH-a990 the first mobile device that is as much a camera as it is a multimedia phone.
The SCH-a990 is also a strong V CAST multimedia phone with full music, video and game capabilities on a high-resolution screen. V CAST Music lets customers play music on their wireless phones the same device they have come to rely upon for entertainment, information and mobile communication. V CAST customers can browse, preview, download and play high-quality digital music from their SCH-a990 over Verizon Wireless' broadband network the most award-winning wireless broadband network in the nation or from the Verizon Wireless V CAST Music online store using a personal computer.
With V CAST on the SCH-a990, customers can view video clips from the hottest names in entertainment, news, sports and more in the palms of their hands. V CAST is currently available to more than 150 million Americans from coast to coast.
"The launch of the a990 marks the first time a multimedia phone is fully integrated with a high resolution camera in the U.S.," said Peter Skarzynski, senior vice president, Samsung. "With a design that feels and looks like a phone and camera, Samsung's a990 is the premier print quality camera phone for photo enthusiasts in the U.S. market."
The new SCH-a990 also supports Verizon Wireless' VZ Navigator, a tool for customers that includes mapping, audible turn-by-turn navigation and the ability to find over 14 million points of interest.

New York's Free Wi-Fi in the Parks' Nearing Completion
Nokia announced today it has been selected to be the primary provider for mobile services in the free Wi-Fi networks in the parks of the city of New York. The networks currently being installed will cover 10 major parks in New York City, including Central Park, Union Square Park and Corona Flushing Meadows. The network infrastructure is owned and managed by WiFi Salon, a New York-based company that owns the exclusive concession rights from the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation for this purpose.
Nokia will introduce mobile multimedia services in the parks with local media partners during the summer. The media partners will provide complimentary mobile versions of their content to Nokia devices with Wi-Fi connectivity used in the parks.
"The Parks Department is pleased to partner with WiFi Salon and Nokia to bring free Wi-Fi access to ten major parks in New York City," said Commissioner Adrian Benepe. "The expanded Wi-Fi network will give park visitors even more options to enjoy. Now, park patrons can throw a pitch, score a goal, catch a wave or surf the Net at some of our City's greatest parks."
"This is a great opportunity for Nokia to showcase the capabilities of our mobile multimedia devices," said Floris van de Klashorst, director, multimedia, Nokia. "Wi-Fi in the parks is an excellent way to pilot new services with our partners in the media industry, while New Yorkers can enjoy some of their favorite pastimes while in the parks - such as reading the paper, listening to music or accessing the Internet - in an entirely new way."
Access to these multimedia services over the Wi-Fi network will be possible with Nokia products that have wireless LAN built in, such as the Nokia N80, the Nokia N91 - two of the latest multimedia devices in the Nokia Nseries range - and the Nokia 770 Internet Tablet, a portable multimedia tablet optimized for Internet communications. Park visitors can access the public Wi-Fi network using laptops or other portable devices with wireless LAN as well.
"Wi-Fi can be more than about Web surfing and checking e-mail," noted Marshall Brown, founder and CEO of WiFi Salon. "What if a hot spot was not just a gateway, but a destination? What if it offered rich multimedia experiences based on the neighborhood where you are located? As prime neighborhood meeting grounds, parks are ideal places for people to experience this new approach to public Wi-Fi."

WebMessenger Mobile for Skype Launches
WebMessenger, provider of mobile instant messaging and voice-over-IP (VoIP) products for enterprises and workers on the go, today announced the launch of WebMessenger Mobile for Skype, an innovative service enabling mobile users to save on long-distance charges and increase productivity by using their Skype accounts to make and receive VoIP calls on their mobile devices.
The service provides real-time presence detection of colleagues, friends and family on the users' mobile devices, enabling them to send and receive chat messages, make phone calls to other Skype contacts, receive calls through their own Skype accounts, and connect up to four participants simultaneously for on-the-go conference calling.
WebMessenger Mobile for Skype works by connecting the mobile device with the users' Skype software running on the desktop at home or in the office. By triggering the users' active SkypeOut account, WebMessenger Mobile for Skype allows users to call anywhere in North America for free and to countries around the world based on Skype's low rates.
"We have had tremendous growth in interest from customers who are using Skype's VoIP telephony service for both personal and business purposes for its ease of use and very low cost," said Joe Naylor, Chief Marketing Officer for WebMessenger. "To extend these productivity enhancements and cost savings to wireless PDAs and phones creates the real-time, always-on collaborative environment demanded by the rapidly growing mobile workforce."

The offer includes Cingular Wireless service, unlimited local and long distance landline service along with high-speed Internet access for $95 a month for the first six months; after that, the price increases to $100 per month. The Cingular plan includes 450 anytime minutes and 5,000 night and weekend minutes with unlimited mobile-to-mobile calling.
Additional perks for bundle customers include a Motorola Razr for $100 before a $100 mail-in rebate (with a new Cingular Nation plan) and a $120 Visa gift card for customers who order or have AT&Ts All Distance local/long distance service and can provide a copy of a current wireless bill from a provider other than Cingular.
The Razr offer is available through the end of August, according to AT&T. The gift card offer is available through Dec. 31, as is an additional offer in which residential phone customers who sign up for or upgrade to a qualifying bundle will receive an integrated mailbox service for free.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Not bad of a deal, I'm paying way more than a $100 a month on my service.

They can bundle all they want. I stay with my P900 and tmob.

@ Resident
I switched from T-Mobile to Cingular for broader coverage. How's the T-mobile signal in your metropolitan area? By the way how's your P900, did they fix the synchronization problem with MS-Outlook as some users having problem with?
[ This Message was edited by: marino on 2006-07-14 23:03 ]
Posted by Residentevil
My P900 is just doing fine. Got a great signal here. Even with only two or one bar I can hold a clear conversation. The whole network with the fewest dropped call is bogus. It all depends on the quality of the antenna in your fon. If you have a good phone you got a good antenna.
I don't synchronize with Outlook. I will wait for the active synch in the P990.
But it worked with my old computer.
Posted by Marino
Glad to hear your P900 doing just fine & you got a great signal in your area.
Dropped calls means barely or no signal at all, it could be bogus but I get a full bars on areas that T-mobile don't have signal at all. Don't get me wrong I have T-Mobile service too.
I needed a wider coverage coz I used back-roads occasionally on my commute. Cingular covers even on the hillside(cow tracks) t-mobile don't, coz I-80 corridor is a parking lot during the commute hours. You will never know when a good signal you needed the most!
Wow, P990 that's a very pricy active synch.

Wireless X-Ray for Docs On The Go
New System Provides Mobile Access to Medical Imaging Systems From Smartphones and Handheld Devices.
The next time your doctor reviews your X-rays don't be alarmed if he looks at his hand instead of a wall-mounted display. Chances are he is just using a new system that gives him the ability to see your images on his smartphone or PDA instead of a standard radiography display.
ICIS PocketPACS, the newest member of healthcare software developer Global Care Quest, Inc.'s Integrated Clinical Information System (ICIS) line up, is an advanced viewing application that can take images from virtually any Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS) and send it to a handheld device or mobile smartphone via wireless Internet or high-speed cellular phone network. The system displays and manipulates chest X-rays, bone X-rays, CT scans, MRI scans, and most other medical imaging modalities.
"Talk to nearly any doctor today and he's going to tell you he's a highly mobile professional," said GCQ chief executive Cleve Adams. "He's on the road, in the office, in the hospital. Even when he's in one location he's always moving. As such, it's important that his patient information be at his fingertips no matter where he is. ICIS PocketPACS delivers that kind of mobility to medical imaging."
Beyond simple image display, ICIS PocketPACS offers a number of advanced viewing functions including zoom, pan, multi-slice scrolling, Cine mode, window-level contrast adjustments, and Image inversion and rotation. The system will display all PACS images at the maximum screen size and image resolution of which the handheld device is capable. In most situations ICIS PocketPACS displays diagnostic quality images suitable for assessment and patient triaging.
ICIS PocketPACS integrates with nearly every PACS or DICOM-capable system, including those from Kodak, GE Healthcare, and Agfa, as well as many others. It can also be used as part of the complete ICIS Mobile solution that provides real time access to electronic medical records, bedside monitoring equipment, physician's notes, labs and more.
"GCQ's mission is to deliver technology that removes the geographical barriers between physician, hospitals, and their patients," Adams said. "ICIS PocketPACS is another step toward delivering universal access to the critical patient information doctors need whenever and wherever they need it."
ICIS PocketPACS will be available in October 2006.

Cingular Bring 3G Wireless Broadband to San Antonio
Mobile Broadband Services Transform Mission City Into Metropolitan Hot Spot.
Cingular Wireless today launched its super-charged wireless network in San Antonio, capable of providing customers with high-speed access to voice or data information in a world that has gone mobile.
Cingular's 3G network is available in 54 communities nearby the major markets of Austin, Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, Atlanta, Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, Gary (Ind.), Las Vegas, Phoenix, Portland (Ore.), Salt Lake City, San Diego, San Francisco, San Jose (Calif.), Seattle, Tacoma (Wash.) and Washington D.C. The company will expand its 3G network coverage area to most major markets by the end of 2006.
The Cingular 3G network uses HSDPA/UMTS (High Speed Downlink Packet Access/Universal Mobile Telephone System) technology. This technology makes it possible for people to enjoy a wide variety of wireless content. HSDPA/UMTS gives Cingular the advantage of offering simultaneous voice and data services to customers and is based on the global standard for wireless communications - GSM. For businesses and consumers, this means more feature- rich services and content, and for Cingular, a more economical method for carrying traffic and more efficient use of spectrum.
Customers who want to watch video highlights of last night's Astros game, or get a preview of HBO's Entourage series, can see it all β and more β by signing up for Cingular Video. Cingular Video is an on-demand streaming video service with a large selection of popular mobile content that can be viewed on 3G-capable Cingular phones.

i heard t-mobile's getting it in 2007.
Posted by Marino
That's their target point (start deploying) to join the high-speed community. I think it's worth the wait for T-Mobile's deployment, perhaps a better & wider spectrum of 3G (or 4G or WiMax capability) Backbone equipments will come up in the horizon.
Posted by Residentevil
Let's just hope I can use my P990 on it.
Posted by Marino
Sure you will and don't loss hope.
Hopefully with the P990 will iron out the previous costly experienced of some P series users.
Posted by Residentevil
It's the 3G issue with UMTS 2100 being international, while Cingular rides the UMTS 1900 bus. That sucks.
Posted by Marino
That's the drawback; at present anything within that frequency is allocated for satellite phone or military bandwidth. The FCC has made reasonable promises to free up additional spectrum in the 2100 MHz band. Probably that's the reason why T-Mobile is waiting until next year for that vanwagon.

Medical Hi-Tech News
VeriChip Corporation announced that Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey, the largest health insurer in the state, has agreed to a two-year pilot program of VeriChip's VeriMed Patient Identification System in conjunction with Hackensack University Medical Center and its physicians. In this new test program, participating patients suffering from chronic diseases would be provided with the VeriChip implantable microchip, to provide emergency room staff easy access to those patients' medical information, as well as to help avoid costly or serious medical errors.
Under this trial, participating Horizon BCBSNJ members with chronic illnesses will receive VeriChip's FDA-approved, human-implantable Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) microchips inserted just under the skin of their right tricep. Each patient's unique 16-digit identifier found within the microchip will then tie into their individual electronic medical record stored within the VeriMed Patient Registry accessible by Hackensack University Medical Center's physicians. Each record will contain vital information related to the patient's condition, family contacts, lab test data, and pharmacy records helping make the difference between life and death during an emergency.
"This two-year collaboration is a milestone for VeriMed and for our implantable identification technology marking the first time a health insurer has sponsored such a program," stated Kevin McLaughlin, Chief Executive Officer, VeriChip Corporation.
For more information on VeriMed, please contact 1-800-970-CHIP or email info@verichipcorp.com.
