Hi there, was redirected here from the Symbian Phones forum. Anyway, here's what I posted there:

I have a P910i and have been looking around for a spare keypad since mine has been broken for almost a year already and I don't plan on upgrading my phone for quite awhile or until the P990 is released and goes down in price. I've searched google and ebay, I've come up with one guy selling it brand new on ebay for US $80. Its located in Hong Kong though so I'm kinda wary. I've looked at www.excelldirect.com, which is in the UK, but they're out of stock it seems. I've looked at the other online stores but their websites don't look too trustworthy to me. Would appreciate it if anyone could point me in the right direction. Thanks.

Sweet! Thanks for the link there and the quick reply.

Edit:Dammit, they're out of stock. Any other links? I'll try contacting the website anyway to see when they're gonna be in stock.

For the techno individuals out there Linksys ships its first wireless-G IP phone, read on.

WIP300 and WIP330 Phones Use Wi-Fi to Deliver Inexpensive, Feature-Rich VoIP Calls.

Linksys, a Division of Cisco Systems, Inc., the recognized leading provider of voice, wireless and networking hardware for the consumer, Small Office/Home Office (SOHO) and small business customer, today announced the immediate availability of its WIP300 and WIP330 Wireless-G IP Phones. The WIP300 and WIP330 are the first in a line of Wireless IP telephony products from Linksys that will enable users to make low-cost Voice over IP (VoIP) calls through 802.11g wireless networks.

Posted by Residentevil
Does that work if your computer is off, but your wireless router and cable modem is on?

Posted by Marino
To be honest with you, I don’t know the full details on how that gadget operates. I’m assuming, since it’s an IP phone as long as your router and your DSL/Cable modem is ON you can do the same as a regular phone.

Check this site they already exposed the guts-out of the WIP330.

I’ve seen one type of VoIP phone (service) no LCD just a keypad with a USB cable. All you need to do is plug-in to your USB port on your computer and dial the number on the pop-up screen.

Posted by Residentevil
But a USB device only works with the computer on. USB drivers only get loaded in normal bootup, that why it is important to have a PS/2 port mouse/keyboard as backup or as a regular mouse/keybpard.

Guys why US, is such a big user of cellphones, and phone in general...but all the devices that they sell here are, not even comperable to Europe or Japan???
All the companies have crappy cheap phones and they don't have coverage of umts etc....that really upset me..just wanted to share

Posted by knight4led
Its just how the companies work here and how government regulations effect it. There are no regulations requiring services from different companies to be comparable and interchangable. So therefore companies here pretty much have leeway to offer any sort of network and any sort of phone, and the users are stuck with it. As such, users here have never thought about getting a phone from anywhere but their wireless provider because its just too much to think about whether it would work.

Posted by Residentevil
That leaves smart ppl like us with better phones but crappy service.

Posted by bobstarsg
uh ! thats bad ...

Posted by Marino
@ robbie335

When you say “crappy cheap phones”, can you translate that in Lehman’s term?

The devices that they sell here are not even comparable to Europe or Japan, in what way?

If you are referring to the camera or video that comes with the phone, who cares about the picture or the movie the quality is not even good! For the Internet-phone, the majority of DSL Home users here in the U.S. are complaining with the speed what’s more with the Internet-phone! Why bother using text or email on the phone while you can call the person, and who wants to press the phone-keypad hundred times just to send a short message, while your laptop (connected to wireless network) is just a finger tips away. My question to you is, “what is the advantage for American Cell phone provider to compete with those country you’ve mention while there’s no marketable future?”

UMTS coverage, you should do your Home Work before posting! As of January 2006, Cingular has deployed UMTS networks in Dallas, Detroit, Phoenix, San Diego, San Francisco, and Seattle, and work continues on turning up UMTS networks in other cities, such as Las Vegas and Washington, DC. Too bad it did not cover Los Angeles.

have you ever thought that maybe the general public across america want lower end phones cos they don't wanna go out there and have to spend I think $600 on a mobile?

ive a friend in LV and yes she rants saying how we in englan have better phones but thats life lol

I guess having the latest phone is abit like having the lastest movie!
I mean you ppl overthere see them first before they go anywhere else,

So ok we have better MOBILE PHONES lol

"Tis life"

Posted by Marino
What is the difference between a hundred dollar compare to a $600 cell phone to call some one?

A cell phone is a necessity, for you guys having a high-end cell phone is a status symbol.

Posted by EastCoastStar
it is NOT a status symbol. not at all.

it is a hobby, something we are ALL interested in.

some people its cars, some people liek radios, come people like RC toys, some people like coins, and so on. this is what we like to do. and If we enjoy phones, we like to have a nice one usually.

So no, its not a status symbol.

Thanks

p.s. I will be stoping in now all. I just used to not come on becuase it wasnt english before, and that frustrated me because it is the USA thread. but ill be back now

Some people doing it for a hobby but the majority having a high-end phone outside the State are a STATUS SYMBOL!

Don’t get me wrong I carry a somewhat high-end phone with PDA, detachable QWERTY keyboard, Bluetooth, WiFi and camera (I really don’t care so much of the camera coz its crappy, I’d rather use my digital camera). I used every option of my cell phone every day.

I bet you the majority of those guys that claims they have a so called high-end cell phone, they never use a fraction of its options they just have it for the STATUS SYMBOL that’s the reality.

@REO

I admit I’m a bit out of steam.. but let’s dissect the post before this thing gets out of direction:

Statement 1. “Guys why US, is such a big user of cellphones, and phone in general...but all the devices that they sell here are, not even comperable to Europe or Japan???”

• Devices sold here in the US not even comparable to Europe or Japan – I-Mate is available at On The Go Solutions base in Illinois. Japan made phones are all over the United States.

• If he is referring to American made devices not even comparable to those country’s? It depends on how you look at it, make a list of options and compare.

Statement 2. “All the companies have crappy cheap phones and they don't have coverage of umts etc”

• All the companies have crappy cheap phones – every Cell Phone providers throughout the world have the same trend to accommodate their customers.

• “and they don't have coverage of umts etc”. See line 176 as of January 2006, Cingular has deployed UMTS networks in Dallas, Detroit, Phoenix, San Diego, San Francisco, and Seattle.

every person that i know who has a high end phone uses the high end features, so its more than just a status symbol, its staying in communication all the time. weather its through GPRS or EDGE, wifi, MS OUTLOOK, anything, most people use it.
out of curiosity, what phone do you have?

I have the treo 650, and use outlook, word, and many more features that "low end and mid range" phones do not have.

as for @REO, i know he uses his K-JAM for many things, and he uses the features too.

i just want to point out that it is NOT a status symbol. im sure there are a few people out there (well, im REAL SURE), many people use it as a status symbol actually, mainly teenagers, but as for most of us here at esato, we use the features proudly.

Posted by Marino
I use HP6315, enough for my needs.

what can I say REO is a classy guy.

Here is a cut & paste, his comment about Americans in terms of cell phone technology. Read on, for that I’m out.

“No expandable memory....... I've said it before, American's are ignorant to cell phone technology. The reason for non-expandable memory is, because americans could care less about memory cards.

The mentality is: A phone is simply to make phone calls. Anything extra, is accepted as nice features. This frustrates me.

Hence why there is not a demand for phones with all the bells and whistles.

I need all the technology I can get in a phone. I don't care to pay a little more if I can get all the tools I need.

Not all Americans think like I do.”

@Marino

Before you cut and paste and old post, make sure to stay in context.
The reason for that post was my frustration with launch dates in the U.S.A. and how many Americans settle for cheap phones.

How ever, take guys like myself , EastCoastStar, Knight4led, Residentevil, etc..... in The USA. We use our phones to there full potential and then some. My S710 and K Jam are not for your average cell phone users.

My K Jam has a 2gig card..... Hmmmm why would I need that??????

hmmmmm perhaps to watch movies, listen to MP 3's , Answer corporate e-mails, talk with relatives through MSN messenger. Read powerpoint presentations while on my way to a business trip, shoot of e-mails to clients, play games at the airport, read news via WIFI, shoot some pics with the 1.3 MP cam, listen to music via the internet. track expenses with excel.

Does that sound like I would use it as a status symbol ?

Posted by Residentevil
The general American uses a simple phone, while munching down a huge hamburger with fries, but flushing it down with a diet soda.

Posted by REO
@Residentevil

Well said !!! LOL

@REO

What blows my steam off was reading Post ragging your side of the aisles technology. They think having a high-end cell phone and functional knowledge about it they are better or knowledgeable enough about cell phone technology.

“watch movies, listen to MP 3's , Answer corporate e-mails, talk with relatives through MSN messenger. Read powerpoint presentations while on my way to a business trip, shoot of e-mails to clients, play games at the airport, read news via WIFI, shoot some pics with the 1.3 MP cam, listen to music via the internet. track expenses with excel.”

That’s an Old School/Basic application not even enough to impress some one that works in High Tech here in Silicon Valley.

“Before you cut and paste and old post, make sure to stay in context.
The reason for that post was my frustration with launch dates in the U.S.A. and how many Americans settle for cheap phones.”

I feel for your frustration, but for your information REO is not an American technology so don’t take it to the Americans.

@Marino

Take your Silicon Valley BS else where. Get your self an Idiot's guide to forum conversation.

Or only post when sober. I wasn't trying to impress you, just giving you an Idea of what some of us like in our toys.

You're probably posting from a public library and live in a rundown shack in East LA. Don't give me that Silicon BS............................

I want to apologize to the Esato family, specially to EastCoastStar. Because of my outburst my choice of word is not kind to others.

Forum should be a place to share and exchange ideas.. Personal attack and insulting words is offensive to many.

That sounds good. BTW the Nokia N80 is looking good to me. I can't believe I just said that, since I'm not a Nokia fan.

Take a look at Whizz_68 photos on page 42 of the link below.

Hello again to all, haven't posted on the thread in a while, but I'm back! Wasnt an active poster but I did view the thread often. Now that "my world" is back to "normal" I hope to become more active. Maybe we can get this topic going!

Anyone here waiting on the P990? I've wanted one since it was announced but have almost lost all interest in it. But, I am sure that when it finally is released I will fall in love again. M600 is attractive though and seems to be a steal at $500.

Posted by REO
@himomer

I got tired of waiting for the P990 and bought a KJAM.

I am as happy as a pig in mud. The Wizard is the way to go. drags their feet. I use to wait on

I was so loyal, until one day I decided not to wait on the procrastinating team.

Get an N80, to hell with
They could care less for the U.S. market.

I'll go back to when they can crank out as many cells as Nokia.

@REO

N80 is a nice phone, but I can't allow myself to purchase a nokia.

The wireless carriers in the US are partly to blame for SE's limited interest in our market. Our networks are simply inferior to those of Europe and Asia. I am not a Cingular customer, however I don't think they sell phones that wont work on the 850 band. SE doens't make that many quad-band phones.
