turning off while charging will only speed up the charging time .
Posted by blackspot
I agree, since there's no load so the battery will charge faster. I don't see how it could make your battery life better.
Posted by orang3
i dont think it would .. ehhe

Ah it's the battery topic again!
The phones will have a charge circuit included, so the charge current passes thru this circuit into the batt. This charges the batt by a constant current/const voltage method until the batt is full. At the full state, the rate of charge decreases and the charge circuit switches off. Also known as delta peak charging. I'm pretty sure that the li-ion don't continue to trickle charge, but the nicad and nimh do, typically at 1/10 current capacity.
Posted by ijefferies
Discharging the batt is also governed by a similar process, with the batt reaching a near empty state, the phone will switch off to prevent a full discharge. In a nonregulated discharge, it is possible for the weaker cells to have their polarity reversed. Subsequent charges can't fix this.
It is not advised to fully discharge li-ion batts as it causes them to age faster. Best life is obtained by charging when it reaches 1/8 full, and if the phone has switched it's self off, don't switch on til you charge.

STILL a nice thread! Keep it up boys

My batt. on P900 recently will not hold a charge. If I plug it in, the batt icon does not flash like normally, led does not stay lit. The batt. % will increase like it's charging but once removed from charger, it will drained in an hour to 10%. Is this a faulty batt. or a phone problem. I don't mind buying a new batt. if that's the problem. Also the phone seems a little more warmer than usual. Any input, advice is greatly appreciated.
Posted by govigov
Mostly a case of batt faulty.
Posted by ijefferies
@baseballfanz. From the symptoms it sounds like one of the cells has begun to break down. This causes the internal resistance to rise, and the batt will generate heat as the current flows through the cell. The damaged cell will have minimal capacity and doesn't charge or discharge effectively. Only solution is a new battery, and if possible check the manf date and buy a recent one as incorrect storage, eg temperature, causes the cells to age and reduces useful life.

Appreciates all inputs, been very helpful. Thank You to govigov and ijefferies. I order a new battery, hope that's the cause of it. Another things my original battery came as a model BST-15 1260mAh, the sonyericsson site and a few other place that have OEM battery have the same model number but their's are all 1000 mAh, still work with P900?
Thanks again
Posted by ijefferies
It should work, but run-time of the phone will be reduced. Check that it's an original SE pack, as there's a batch of poor quality copies around.
Posted by baseballfanz
No luck with new batt. look like it's going back to Sony Ericsson.

Umm..If you can't get the battery out..Ummm..Don't get something to poke it out..Since..It sort of breaks the Battery cover..As..My friend did with his Nokia 7250i battery..Since it was quite hard to get out..Hmm..But SE has done a good job of having a tab off the edge of the battery compartment (S700)

what i do during chrging is that i turned off my handy... |
technically, you can't do this with K700i, right? because, the unit turns itself on when you charge it, even if it is turned off. i noticed that it is indeed on because once, when i charged my phone when it was off, after removing the charger, it gave me the "shutdown animation" as if i was turning off my phone.

I got a new phone from SE, as a replacement, I wasn't sure what part of it was new (it said "replaced contents" in the description of service), so I didn't now that battery was new. Because of that I didn't do the long charges but started to use the phone normally. So far the charge counter in Float's Mobile Agent shows 6. My question to You:
Is there any point in doing the long charges now or is it a lost cause?
Posted by 701
U don't need long charges. If u read this thread u know u just charge it normally fro the 1st charge onwards.

Hi guys what is the right way to charge my battery from my new Sony Ericsson T610 phone because. I have not open the box and begin to use it so please help me out thank you.

he he i got lucky! My k700 can last 2 maybe 3 days with an hour or 2(maybe 3-4 if bored) of gprs, BT, music radio camera video

Good for you. Which application/feature do you think drains power the most?
Posted by sanjcher
how much batt time do you get on k700i if ur just listenin to mp3?
i get atleast about 8 hrs+. i think my batt life is quite impressive compared to other k700i. i have latest firmware and also completely charged batt for 12 hrs when i first got it (i didnt even turn it on for 1 min to see if it was working!!!!). then every 6-7 days i discharge batt completely (leave on BT and mp3 overnight) and then charge it up completely. this has helped improve my batt life quite a bit.
hope this helps

@sanj:
what type of K700 battery do you own? the BST-30 Li-Ion or the Li-Pol ?
AFAIK they are rated to be both 700 mAh, but I think that a minimum difference can be felt while using one or the other..

my p910 will do about a day and a half of mixed use. though I recharge it before it is fully discharged

once my pone was plugged in to the charger when suddenlly i herd a popin noise and i looked towards my phone and all that i saw was smoke coming out,
well boys and girls this shows when you leave your phone in the charger for over 2 weeks on the run lol

I dont think its a usual fact, if batt full,it wont charge longer.
Posted by blayv
Ok. Here's what I've noticed: i used optimised charging (while the phone is on) till indicator shows full batt, them immediately unplug it. For about 2 months performance degraded noticeably. Then last month I've been charging it while it's off for about 4 hours, then turn it on and leave it on charger, cause it starts recharging even though it showed full batt. And it's kinda better now, by 15-20 percents, at least it seems that way to me.

i don't regularily recharge my 10-month old t610. but every now and then. it's never depleted when i hop it in the charger. sometimes it's 75% and i recharge it. most often i dont even have it fully charged. och, fast paced life
still, the battery holds on just fine. absolutelly no suprises. lasts days to a week and talktime is at its best. when i got it i insisted in fully charging the battery before operating it.
my hbh-600 is giving me some trouble. variable operating time..from 45minutes to 3h. dunno. i have the same charging treatment. i'll probably go easy on the little one soon, tho.
i miss my old nokia headset, made in romania, with a full astounding 6h talk time!
my HP Ipaq h6340's battery is the best performer. listen to mp3 for 24h!!! until it completely drains out. wow.
case study: full backlight on, GPRS continuous session/transfer, mp3 playback to headphones, extra text imput and file management/various apps (documents, pictures, even watching a movie), all this on a train, very variable network coverage (blackouts quite often, forcing search mode on the device), for 8 straight hours. arrival always finds me with about 45% battery left. the best power management i've seen in a smartphone. stoked! usual "it's 56%, let's charge it for no surprises...".

@danberte
The phone battery is li-ion while the battery for the BT headset is Ni-MH, that should provide some explanation for the difference. The2 kinds of battery should be treated differently
Posted by danberte
@ ESTOR
darn, i assumed that an Akono would have a Li-Ion batt!!! NI-MH?? auch. been actually seeking this info. thanx. should i expect any problems with it? the old nokia boom headset had a li-ion!
Posted by zhudm
I did read some where before that fully discharging your battery (i.e. to near 0%) is bad for Li-Ion and Li-Po. The recommendation in this case in fact is to re-charge anytime it has dropped below 50%, and every month or so, only then perform the full discharge before re-charging.
True?
Posted by Pradhika
@Zhudm. You are right. But one more point is you have to d.charge it upto 90 percent then & there to work out the last stage of the cell.
Posted by Aivar
No, it's not right!
My t68i has Li-pol battery. I nearly always let the battery turn completly empty before I start charging it. By completly empty I mean the situation, when the phone switches off due very low battery status.
Now my phone (and battery) is over 3 years old. And the battery works like new, average standby time 8,5 days!

@Aivar. I should have mentioned atleast 90 percent. What you do is perfect. But most of us hesitate to use it till death.

@aivar its optimised charging which means the more you charge the more your battery life it doesnt gets old
Posted by Aivar
The more often you charge the battery the shorter will be its lifetime. The battery stores more energy and "lives" longer, if you let the battery turn completly empty before charging. Also you must have time to charge it well, at least 4-5 hours in minimum. The longer the better.
I can say it by my own experience (as I have mentioned it before). My phone T68i with its battery is now 3 year and 2 months old and
the battery still lasts 8,5 days on average.
---
PS.
Just a few hours ago my T68i switched off after its battery had lasted 248 hours (nearly 10,5 days). This was now, after more than three years of use!
And as I have mentioned in some other threads, it's not its personal best. The record was 278 hours (over 11,5 days).
So, let's take a good care of our phone and its battery - then the battery serves us for a long time

@zdhum: u read good.it's good to keep it toped-up.Discharging it would hurt the battery-read all about it in the 1st posts and at the battery-university.Never mind what aivar says-the pros say different.
Posted by Aivar
I did not write what I think or what I have heard or what I have read from somewhere. I told you, what I have been experienced myself! And the conclusion is:
The battery stores more energy and lives longer, if you let the battery turn completly empty before charging.
One my friend also had T68i and he charged it very often (and never let the battery turn empty). And what happened? The battery of his phone lasted for a very little time and after a year or so the battery couldn't last even a day.
The battery of my T68i lasts very well even after 3 years! And this is not an exception. My girlfriend has T65, she also nearly always lets the battery turn completly empty before she starts to charge it. And the battery lives excellently! Her T65 with its battery will be 3 years old in December.
So, I must repeat myself:
The more often you charge the battery the shorter will be its lifetime. The battery stores more energy and lives longer, if you let the battery turn completly empty before charging.

that's just luck buddy. You are taking one or two experiences and spinning a story out of it.
I charged my K700 every night all night for over a year, and the battery is no better or worse than the day I bought the phone.
The reason your battery doesn't die when you let it go "dead" is because the phone circuitry is designed to switch the phone off when the battery gets very low. So, it never gets to more than 90% or so discharged. The phone is saving the battery from being killed by people who are stuck in the old wisdom of batteries that have memory affect.
My T610 lasted a bit longer than two days, so I often let it run down halfway, then charge it up and then let it get half-way, again and again and I never had the battery memory affect. That battery also to this day works perfectly. That phone was used everyday for a year, then intermittantly for the next year. Still perfect.
Posted by Aivar
Nice post, Max_wedge.
Let's hope that your battery lives more than 3 years too with the "new" way of treating it
I'll stuck to the old wisdom, which "works" for me and for my friend perfectly.
Posted by max_wedge
Aivar, my battery will last for three years for the same reason yours did, because the phone stops it from completely discharging, not because you completely discharge it. You can't completely discharge it, due to the phone circuitry.
There is nothing wrong with the way you treat your battery, just as there is nothing wrong with charging it every night. Due to the design of the charging system, both systems work perfectly. On NIMH batteries, if you charged it every night it would eventually suffer from battery memory effect. With lithium batteries that simply doesn't apply. If your friends batt died it was faulty, not because he didn't discharge it
It is unnecessary to make lithium batteries run down before charging, it does not improve the life of the battery. That is simply how they are designed.
Posted by Aivar
I just have some more comments to say.
Of course it's impossible to discharge the battery completly empty nowadays. The inside clock needs energy to run etc. I mean that I start to charge my battery when the battery is so empty that the phone switches off itself.
Max_wedge, you wrote: "I charged my K700 every night all night for over a year, and the battery is no better or worse than the day I bought the phone."
How can you say that your battery is no better or worse, if you have charged it every night?! Even a very old battery can last a day.
Maybe you didn't charge your battery properly in the beginning? A new battery needs to be run "completely" empty and then to be given a long charging period (as we know, this cycle should be repeated several times in the beginning). Perhaps therefore your battery didn't achieve its maximum capacity. For example, my battery lasted after the first five charges quite badly and then achieved its great maximum.
I hope you agree that battery does not live forever. But what "makes" the battery old? Why one battery lasts 3-4 years in good condition and the other one has power only for a year? The reason is not time but the frequency of charging. It is a wellknown truth that... Don't you really agree with that?
I don't write it on the basis of my own or my friends' experience only. You might read the opinions in Esato where many complain that they charge their battey almost every day and it doesn't last long.
In this thread orang3 wrote in first post:
----
You should also understand that due to the chemical processes involved, batteries deteriorate over time. After a certain number of cycles, the battery's maximum charge capacity drops to below 80 percent of its original capacity.
Battery type / Number of charging cycles
Nickel cadmium (NiCd) 1,500
Nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) 300-500
Lithium-ion (Li-ion) 500-1,000
Lithium-polymer (Li-Po) 300-500"
---
I don't know are those numbers true or not, but i is interesting comment.
But what do you think, Max_wedge? What makes a battery old?
Looking forward to your reply

I've got two same BST-37 batteries for my K750i and
the other one seems to last longer than the other.
I've used and charged them exactly the same way.
All I can think of is maybe the weaker one was an old stock battery.

Good to see the battery thread is still causing a bit of controversy! Another reliable source of info on recharging batteries can be found on Ripmax's web site. This is a mecca for Radio Control fans. Modern phones and modern batteries ie Li-ion/poly have charge control circuits which make it impossible to overcharge or over discharge the battery. The useful life can be extended with a little care, like keeping everything as cool as possible may get a few extra cycles.
Posted by ijefferies
But of course, a battery lasting for 500 cycles will still last over a year based on an overnight charge each night. If like me you keep the phone for a year then get a free upgrade, there is no issue. Charge it when it warns you it's low, when you go to bed, sitting in your fav chair on wap. Charge it, use it, charge it. Simple.
Thanks for reading.
