I am writing this, because I was thinking about something last night. When I first got my T616, I thought it was only a dual-band, and could only function in the US.

However, I saw Cingular advertising it as a "World Phone", and didn't understand this. Upon further investigation, I discovered that the phone functioned on the 1800 frequency (for outside the US), but I also discovered that this band was supposedly not used that much.

Well, I'd like to hear from everyone, please, where you are located, and what bands you use! This way, when I travel, I'll know what phone I need (dual-band, tri-band or quad-band).

To start, in Texas, we use the 850 band.

Thanks!!!

nope, GB uses 900 and 1800 just like the rest of the world expect for the Americas.

North America, GSM 850/1900, CDMA 900/1800 + AMPS + 3G CDMA2000 I think

South America, GSM 850/1900 + probably some CDMA and analogue standard + 3G CDMA2000 I think

Europe, GSM 900/1800, some old analogue standards such as NMT (Nordic Mobile Telephony) at 450 MHz and possibly some CDMA standards in some countries + 3G UMTS 450 MHz

Asia, GSM 900/1800 and maybe some other networks + 3G UMTS 450 MHz (not sure about the freq)

Australia, GSM 900/1800, CDMA (don't know what freq) + 3G UMTS 450 MHz (not sure about the freq)

Africa, GSM 900/1800 and possibly some CDMA and analogue networks + 3G UMTS I think

Japan, hmm, different standard from everyone else never remember the name of it. + some 3G standard, don't know which one?

Slovakia (Mid Europe) - GSM 900, 1800 - 99,9%, 0,1% NMT - some dinosaurs are still usin' this kind of phones...

Pilipinas 900/1800

@nwmq1

just some corrections... UMTS uses frequencies between 1900 and 2200MHz in most countries. 450MHz is used by for example the NMT network in Sweden, but will in a few years also host the new swedish high speed CDMA network.

Manila - 900/1800 (Globe Network). Band? I always watch 'live bands' -like Nyoy Volante and the Manos and Side A, counterparts of The Beach Boys and Boyz II Men in the US !

On CDMA we have cdma2000 1x 3G with Telefonica and Bellsouth (now telefonica)

Jojo-i ddnt know Manila is a country

@jowi - It was then (Manila) before it became 'Philippines'. You should have posted 'Philippines' and not 'Pilipinas' - remember that this is an international discussion forum and our place is more better known as 'Philippines' rather than 'Pilipinas' - OK then ???

@Cytech

My bad, mixed it up with the upcoming CDMA network. Do you know which standard Japan uses for its 3G? From what I remember there are 3 developed 3G standards and Japan is using "the third one" that no-one else is using.

Sweden. The 900 band is being used in 99% of cases unless you are in the absolute core of a city.

I can actually pick up 1800 signals in a close southern suburb to Stockholm where I live, but they are weak (zero of three bars on a siemens phone, it can just about "see" the network).

I think that the UK networks O2 and Vodafone use the 900Mhz band, while Orange, T-Mobile, and Virgin use the 1800Mhz one - someone correct me if I'm wrong and got those the wrong way round!

By the way, what is the CDMA band? I've never heard of it before!

There are three common technologies used by cell-phone networks for transmitting information:

Frequency division multiple access (FDMA)
Time division multiple access (TDMA)
Code division multiple access (CDMA)

The first word tells you what the access method is. The second word, division, lets you know that it splits calls based on that access method.

FDMA puts each call on a separate frequency.
TDMA assigns each call a certain portion of time on a designated frequency.
CDMA gives a unique code to each call and spreads it over the available frequencies.

The last part of each name is multiple access. This simply means that more than one user can utilize each cell.

So is this different and/or better than the system used here and in other countries?

From what I think I know (I could be totally wrong, but I'm simply putting info that I've picked up along the way together), CDMA has always been faster than GSM (data wise), with the 3G and all that good stuff, which is why GSM networks had to create the EDGE (to increase data transmission speeds).
