Hi Everyone,
I'm making myself a new computer and wondered which Operating System to have... The obvious choice would be Pro, however, everyone I've asked so far has said that Home is better... I'll be mainly using the computer for Gaming and Instant Messenging.
Just wondered everyone else's opinions...

Think for what you need, Home would definatly be the easiest option. Professional is more suited for servers and networking i think.
Home is cheaper too

Hi! If you use the pc for gaming or messeging than you have to use HOME EDITION! I personally use Pro, because I use'em for makeing flashes or 3d gaphrics, maybe home is better for you! Cheers!

if you plan on using a LAN, get pro. if not, get home...cause its all you'd need.

I am gonna have a simple network - 2 Computers (1 running XP Home, other trying to decide) + Router.. Hard Disk, Printer + Internet Connection Sharing... That's all, does this change anything...?

as I recall home has about 85-90% of pro features but anyway... here is a site to help you decide

If I remember correctly, XP Pro comes with Backup utility and XP Home doesn't. Well technically its not true. XP Home has it too but it doesn't get installed by default. Its on the XP Home disc somewhere but you have to install it manually. Thats what I read in a PC mag anyway!!

I am using an MS XP Professional OS Edition. it has been running for 2 years now, and never had a slightest problem since then, only a minor 'hangs' at times - which is very normal. MS OS come in cheap here in South East Asia, you can buy an XP Professional OS for only US$ 2.00, some CD-roms comes in package form: OS + Norton Anti-Virus + Games +Mp3 Titles, all with the same price. We live in the region where piracy is blatantly in abundance, not to mention the DVD titles as well. But mine, is an original one by the way !

There are two more options:
Linux
Mac
It is so nice to not have to worry about viruses.

Actually, I'm having a tri-boot PC with XP as the main OS (about 140gb of the 160gb disk - partitioned, and yes i know it'll be less than 160gb when formatted but meh), Linux (probs RedHat Linux, but dunno with 10gb) and um, something else that's technically illegal as it's downloaded and doesn't come out until 2006 so I can't say much else about it, taking up another 10gb...
As for Mac, good systems but not my type of thing...

Thats not true.. I have Home and Pro, home on mye notebook and pro at my gaming pc.. and Windows 2003 server on the server. But back to XP.. i think you can fine go for Home. I don't see the difference in this to operating system..

The biggest difference between Home and Pro version is the security, eventhough Home has quite improved security features from earlier systems, Pro has taken one step further. Pro has the same security as Home, plus some more security features to be a appropriate OS to use in a company network enviroment. Sure, you can use the Pro version at home if you want, but the Home version offers good security for home users as well.
