16 days left and Hungary become a member of the European Union!
Posted by boto43
The same 4 Czech rep.,Poland,Slovakia and others. But is it good 4 them. What do u think, ppl from countries that join 2 EU.
Posted by BobaFett
it will be hard times, but its the only way. i am happy to be now official the apart of europe.

Welcome aboard all!
Not sure about the single currency though, we in the UK so far are staying out of it, and I personally think that's good - I don't like the idea that inflation etc. is controlled from Brussels and not locally. Do people from Hungary and the other countries joining the EU shortly want to be part of the single currency?
Posted by BobaFett
euro, as official currancy will be in hungary in 2008. we accept it of course in hotels and u can pay with it in some shops aswell.
Posted by boto43
I think, euro will be an official currency in Slovakia and Czechia (new name ) in 2009. We aren't pleased with it too much.

I see people being concerned about loosing their national identity, language and culture if EU becomes one country and some one gave the example of yugoslavia. It need not be like that I can give an example, I am from India and in India the country is divided into different states like the US and almost every state has its own language, alphabet, culture, history, cusine, dress etc people from one state can't understand the language of the people from another state and nor would they like most of the food in another state. So India is pretty much like the EU as one country only with four times more population. We have 28 states with 15 official langauges (languages which are fully developed with its own alphabet, grammer etc) and about 400 dialects.
So what I am trying to say is that we have succesfully mangaged such a diverse country as on nation for 56 years now so it shouldn't be a problem for the europeans. IMO as long as it is a democracy and have a well defined constitution it is no problem.
What you guys think?
Posted by boto43
Thanx 2 u anish,we would be grateful 4 more views of non Europeans!
Posted by Steve_Hun
I totally agree with anish! I think United States of Europe can be a good ansver for the position of the USA! I think all the member states must have there own identity, language, etc. But with a single currency (like the EURO) and with a big market without borders and limitations would be great! I am waiting for the day when I can pay with € in Hungary (of corse I can pay with it today, but its not the same)! With the € we can feel, that we are really one part of Europe!

@cytech why do think its a crappy thing, i mean eu story?

each country should be controlled by it's own government without the involvment of some people in Brussel. Ok, it can be good in some political question like military defense, trade agreements, but EU has gotten to much control over the individual contries and their own government.
it's not for nothing that the swedish people voted against EMU and euro last year

I'm a bit
Posted by BobaFett
@cytech thx. u see, i think our point of view depends on the economy and industry of our countries. wish my one, hungary, could allowe the same opinion as your, but our past is different... think u know what i mean...
Posted by batesie
i agree with cytech. in thre uk, people are happy being part of the eu but are getting fed up with the changes they are making. all countries are different and have there own heritages to preserve.
Posted by Sammy_boy
I think as long as each countries' independance, heritage and tradition is preserved, then it would be a good thing. There's been a lot of negative press over the years here in the UK about the EU - huge amounts of taxpayers' money going in farm subsidies, stupid regulations trying to pointlessly regulate things like banana size, curviness of cucumbers, etc. and something about wanting to rename British chocolate 'Vegelate' because of using vegitable fat or something....
Anyway, I think it depends on that countries' economy and the way it does things. From what I can gather a lot of economies on the continent are quite socialist, whilst the UK's is more like the USA's, so our economy being controlled by Brussels would be a very bad thing for us.
Oh, and we've finally been given a referendum on joining the Euro.... at some stage. Did people in other EU countries all get a referendum on this or not before you joined up?
Posted by boto43
We (Slovaks) had the referendum about joining to EU. It was very close for joining to EU. Ppl in our country are thinking that membership in EU is a necessary evil . I hope that nobody will be measuring lengh of cucumbers, carrot or whatever from May of 1 st.'cause I've got a garden (joke). On the other hand everything we can expect from EU red tapes.
Posted by BobaFett
not everyboda here, in hungary, is happy for it. but i think its not a question of mood, more of logical thinking. we need the eu. i am for it, even i would be more satisfied to march in with better conditions from our side, i mean industrial and political aswell.
Posted by Sammy_boy
@boto43 :
The red tape's one of the main reasons I'm against the UK getting more closely involved with Europe. It's nothing xenophobic, I just think that at the moment it's against the UK's interest. And, as the country that invented red tape, we already have plenty of the damn stuff already!
We did have a vote on joining the EEC (as it was then) in about 1973 - but then we were just voting for joining a trading community with it's benefits only I believe - anyone who's a bit older than me and would remember please correct me if I'm wrong!
We didn't vote on EU superstates or closer integration, so it's good we've finally got a chance to vote on it, when the UK government finally decide to tell us when it will be!

7 days and 6 hours left and Hungary will join the EU!

Posted by boto43
Hey Steve, what do u think u'll be so happy of Hungarian membership in EU next year. Anyway ur countdown here is very interesting! Try it in minutes or seconds.
Posted by Steve_Hun
Not I'm who count down, but the clock on the http://www.magyarorszag.hu/eu site! (Magyarorszag means Hungary)
And yes, I'm sure I'll be happy with the EU membership next year too! It will be good for the economy, the environment, and for me, becouse I'd like to go to the UK for a year and it will be much easier as an EU citizen!
Anyway 5 days, 21 hors, 50 minutes, 20 secounds left and Hungary will be the member of the EU!
Steve

How many hours still left for 10 new member countries to join to EU?
Posted by Elrond
1 day, 6 hours, 1 minute and 35sec
Posted by Sammy_boy
It's interesting to see how different countries view joining the EU - a lot of people from other countries are really looking forward to joining - compared to the UK where people seem to view it very suspiciously and with scepticism. I guess it depends on the country and it's hopes and aspirations, and that us in the UK have a bit of an 'island' mentality...
Anyways, best of luck to those of you joining in 1 day, 5 hours etc. etc., I hope it brings many benefits to you!
Welcome to the club
Posted by boto43
I am not sure if we are looking forward to join to EU or we are affraid of the political and economic act of our governments.
Look at the referends of joining to EU in all new member countries.
I think that referends have been very close for joining to EU in each country. I dont think that ppl are pleased with membership of EU.We can see a lot of problems based on bureaucratic access of EU to our
countries.
Even I can say the may of 1 is the day of the dependence of our countries upon EU and maybe the day which we are loosing our national freedom. but we will see ....
I would be very glad to be wrong today.
Posted by rencomp
3 hours to go, before the new countries will join the EU. I am looking forward to it
Posted by Elrond
I agree with you. It will take a few years. In the 10 countries it would be hard, but then it will be worth the hard work.
20 minutes till join.
Posted by Elrond
The 10 countries are joined now.
Posted by Sammy_boy
Welcome to you all!
I hope it will be beneficial to your countries! I'd say though to stay away from the single currency.... but that's just me!
Posted by boto43
We are 13 hours in eu and nothing has changed yet Boys whats the matter ?

Second day in EU and still nothing new or not. Oh yes

Quite an interesting thread this; some very interesting points indeed. I must say that I am quite pleased that the EU is expanding, it will be a great day when all of the nations of Europe are part of the EU and we can have a free trade area across the entire continent, plus freedom of travel too. However, I believe that we should keep the EU as an organisation consisting of nation states and not allow it to become a 'United States of Europe' or some such thing.
People have been looking at various historical examples in this thread and I would like to share one of my own with you. Europe hasn't been successfully united in peace since the Roman Empire, ever since then wars and disputes have dogged European integration. One has to realise that Europe is not the U.S.A. or India, the nations of Europe are very different from one another and integrating them into one 'super state' isn't very practical, certainly not in the near future anyway.
Europe is only now finding its feet again after WWII, up until then it was European nations that dominated the world, and had done so for centuries. Now we have a chance to make Europe strong again, but that doesn't mean we should rob nations of their independence. We are much better off as individuals, but individuals that work together and cooperate with one another.
I don't see it being a bad thing to have a European Army that would allow us to be independent of the U.S.A. in terms of military affairs. One only has to look at the Yugoslavian civil war to see how impotent Europeans were without U.S. military intervention.
We cannot present a credible alternative to U.S. global power until each of the member states of the Union acts in the best interests of the Union, as has been stated previously; this doesn't happen at the moment. France is probably the worst offender at this; it consistently looks out for itself and flouts EU laws when they don't suit, although the UK, Germany and various other nations also look out for themselves above the EU common good as well.

Thank you ppl that you are using the thread to expres your views. I am very glad the Eu forum is still alive. Hope you will continue this pace. EU forum is for all ppl who come from EU member countries and not only for them. I appreciate very much opinions ppl who is not from EU - India etc . What about Bulgarians and Romanians perspective members of EU. Are they here?

Why am I suddenly seeing visions of the Eurovision Song Contest?
Posted by BobaFett
It will be a long and hard way for all of us to create a successful and powerfull eu, but we ll do it! The european countries are able to learn from the mistakes done in the past and share experiences between each other. I see eu as a small tree, the next generations will enjoy the fruit of it. But its a great feeling to take apart at a birth of a new era of history.
Posted by boto43
@bobafett you said it very well but I cannot see only small tree. There are now 25 member countries in EU.After all thats a big one with a lot of fruits now.
