I think that UIQ 3 needs to worry more about PALMone releasing more smart phones soon.

not really my cup of tea but the spec's are great

Posted by redtooth
I agree, its not my cup of tea either.. but still much better to have a upgrade communicator on the market.. if only to put pressure on SE to make a better P900 replacement for us.

Posted by Superluminova
yeah but ive had my fill of smartphones for now,

Posted by AceCobra1
Okay specs. but phone is so big I'd rather pay for a picturebook... Not a big fan of Nokias although thier 7650 is better than P800 due to backlight than frontlight as I noticed today !

Posted by draak1
To redtooth

The Nokia 9500 is not even out yet and you talking about the Nokia 9500 whoop the P900,i don't think budy.

The Nokia 9500 will by released on November 2004,that is a about 9 month to now,by that time will arrive the P1000.

This device is alot smaller, lichter, more advence and better screen to and yes the UIQ 3.0 versie 8.0 from Symbian

i think you are dreaming

Posted by syscrash
Im sorry to say this but the nokia kicked se ass real hard!

Posted by Red_Five
I know a 9210i owner, and boy is that a brick of a phone... My P900 may be one of the larger phones around, but at least I don't need to buy a set of wheels and a handle for hauling around all day...

Posted by BigFeat
No WiFi.... Sales will be low as they will target the same demographic as it predecessors (businesses).

That Nokia phone sure reminds me of my TV remote control...

Posted by Rashkae
Wow... They FINALLY included GPRS and bluetooth into the communicator! It only took them HOW long???

Gee, yes, I'm *sure* the P900 owners are scared now. Right. LOL

hmm an interesting topic, i have the nokia 9210i and can i say it is 1 hell of a brick (i only got it cos my dad got a new laptop)

if se dont bring out a new fone by november (which i am sure they will) this nokia 9500 will KILL the p900

i can know see what will go on my dads 2004 xmas list

Posted by 701
i like it when ppl don't realize how ridiculous they r when posting things.Hold ur horses pal, it's out in half a year having most of the features the PXXX ALREDAY have for 2 YEARS now!

Posted by mmsman
ok but what about MPx? it's alot smaller and has better specs.....
i just don't get it what's all the hype?
yeah it's a wonderful phone i don't think we can be really sure it's a killer if we don't even have any reviews, i have only found one preview which said that the keyboard sucks and nothing else.....
my point: they are going to change a lot of things, it's not even out yet and we don't know what phones will be out then (i expect new smartphones from siemens, samsung and se, motorola already presented MPx)
man i still remember threads like:
neonode will kick p800 ass!
6600 is a p800 killer!
my point: wait and don't just look at white papers......

Posted by nkasuri
Quite honestly, neither of these phones is going to kill each other as they are going after different demographics. The P900 is targetted primarily to people who want advanced PIM and phone features in a portable package. The communicator is more of a laptop replacement. As a phone, its huge. I've used quite a few of them and they are quite gigantic. Keep in mind that this new communicator weighs about sixty percent more than the P900. It is also substantially larger. It is esentially designed for people who need to access and create large spreadsheets and word documents on the go. It is not particularly useful for its PIM functionality becuase to use it one has to set it down on a table. It cant be used with one hand while standing the way the P900 can (at least not effectively). Besides, the P1000 will be out around the same time this is released. That will almost cerainly have WiFi support, more memory, EDGE support, and many of the other features this Nokia Laptop sports. It will simply come down to what you use the phone for. I personally would never buy a communicator simply becuase the size, and laptop type layout dont suit me. I need advanced PIM features which I can access easily with one hand. I personally believe that an ultraportable laptop makes more sense than a communicator.

Well after this mention of the P1000 release in Q4 I really don't see what much relevance this thread will have. Scroll down the middle of the page to where the article addresses SONY ERICSSON.

I agree to some extent with the person who said the p900 and communicator are aimed at a different demographic... however, whilst this person (i forget the name apologies) suggests different users, may I suggest that the correct constituents comprise of the differing time scales...

The P900 is available, and will, as so oft stated, be out of date my the time the communicator is released...

Further, I tend to shy away from keyboard intergated devices, since they are rarely up to scratch... to the person who suggested the communicator is aimed at those who want to write extensive word documents and create spreadsheets... I think you are a little misled here...

I had what I consider to be the best keyboard enabled truly portable device ever, the Psion Series 5... the fact that the keyboard folded made it larger than most other offerings, whilst they keys were described as forming part of a touch type keyboard... However, as nice as it was, any fully grown male will have immense difficulties in typing successfully with it for extended lengths of time... thus, such a problem with the communicator will be much greater...

Much better, perhaps, is the ability to add a keyboard for times when you need one... something which the P900 offers... if you dont need it all the time, you don't have to attach it, but when you do, at least it is full sized...

Thus, I do believe the point that the communicator is largely keyboard based will be its ultimate downfall...

Further, to those who think the spec is high, with 80Mbs of memory... well at this point in time there are devices with much more... the XDA2 for example is, in comparison, a power house, with a 400Mhz processor and 128mb memory (albeit for running programs and storage)... and the use of MMC cards... whatever happened to SD, which would provide a means to Wi-fi if it isn't integrated...

My point is, that the spec for the communicator will, I hope, seem rather sparse when compared to what I expect in 6 months time...

@big feat

the nok does have wifi, it says so in the specs and at this article:

http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/68/35736.html

for wap peeps:

Nokia has buffed up its venerable 9000 series Communicator with tri-band GSM, GPRS EDGE and Wi-Fi support, in partnership with IBM. But this isn't the long-awaited version based on the Hildon user interface. It uses Series 80, which made its debut three years ago, but which has been deprecated in favor of the new Series 90 platform. Series 90 differs by adding pen-input and sleeker menus.

The phone is pitched firmly at enterprises. IBM has added security and management features, and prodded Siebel and SAP to release client versions of the software for the phone; a price tag of €800 ($1000) should keep it out of reach of the consumer market.

Sources told The Register that the first keyboard-based device to sport the Hildon user interface was late because of an internal decision to use backport the UI to Series 80. Series 90 was delivered in November, with the as-yet unreleased 7700 media phone.

The 9500 is pretty significant in at least one respect: it's Nokia's first Wi-Fi phone, and shows that Nokia carrier customers have nothing to fear from supporting devices with both cellular and 802.11b technologies. ®

i thought that future SE phones were using the PALM os rather than Symbian.

Second of all, I dont think that Nokia's phone will get far with only 65K of colors. 264K (not sure if it's that exact number) is the next step. Japan's ahead (way ahead)

Posted by Boinng
There's not much to say about this, it's just a natural evolution for the Communicator, adding more features for those that like the Communicator's way of doing things (ie, a niche market of business types that need this style of phone). It's pointedly done nothing to address the keyboard-orientated form factor that's put the rest of us off the previous models, and by the time it comes out the P1000 will be offering the same or better features, in a package that we'll all find more attractive.

@ amnesia - I think SE are committed to UIQ for the forseeable future. A Sony (not SE) exec did make noises about palm a little while ago, but he was probably just keeping things sweet.

9500- Wot no 3G or GPS!

Posted by BigFeat
Dunno why we're still intrigued about a Nokia phone that hasn't even been released yet. Better yet, in an SE thread. Anywho, I'll be more overwhelmed by Japan's 900i when I visit Japan in early Spring. Moreover, once they finally enter the GSM network I'm sure we'll all be looking elsewhere for phones ...

for some reason that styling reminds me of the ericsson phone that mr 007 James Bond used to drive the BMW Around. Anybody erlse see that? or am I slightly confused

Posted by Khayman
Ok maybe a great pda... but the size is huuuuge!

Anyone else see this SE banner yet?

Yeah .. I've seen it before Didnt notice that thought

Posted by d_a_r_k_n_e_z_z
nokia was the innovator when it relased the 1st communicator years ago while other companies had none like it. other companies are just copying nokia nowadays. the 9500 and p900 should not be compared for the nokia clearly is much more high end than the p900. uh oh... now i will get crap form die hard SE users even if they don't admit that they are.

Well it's a nice phone it has excellent features etc.
but why is it more high end than p900?
the price is the same
thu build quality is worse than p900 (read the preview a infosync)
features are better but are forgeting that the p series are 2 yr old?
i'm 99% positive that se will release a p1000 or whatever at the same time or at a max 1-2 minths later, they HAVE to because they are a company which concetrates on high end users....

Posted by Flying Finn
Infosync also said the build might change before the release. Remember it was a prototype they were testing. And I don't remember them comparing it to P900?

got say never seen a nokia phone thats been better than a SE !! err no sorry i had the 1st nokia phone out the cityman, that was better cause SE did not have a phone I think !

Posted by sapporobaby
@All

WiFi and Edge? This is all Nokia has to offer? It seems that most SE phones have been tri-band for years. BT is a staple of SE for years and years, and years. Nokia finally makes a "Smartphone" that can compete with SE and people think Nokia will rule the world.

Posted by *Jojo*
@redtooth - Very impressive specs there ! I, for one will surely go for the new Nokia Communicator - 9500, unless, I've seen the specs of the SE P1000 . . .

Posted by Evolution VIII
A big HAHA, i dont think it can whoop the P900, I think they are not serious in building their phones

Posted by batesie
No chance, the P900 is the mutts nuts (as we all know!)
P900 - 150 grams (with flip/MS Duo etc)
9500 - 222 grams (without memorycard!)

TOO BIG MR NOKIA!

And I can say that P900 has too small screen and no effective enough data input method for PDA usage. And 9500 has memorycard...

From the specs/feature wise, 9500 is more advanced than P900. Basicly the only thing that 9500 doesn't have compared to the P900 is the touchscreen and I don't consider that as a bad thing.

And you're judging the quality from some preview made with early prototype?!? Talk about the build quality from the final product, that's what the users get.

What the age got to do with this? Communicator serie is almost 10 years old...

As usual it comes down to personal taste......

But it has a great spec.......

Personally size is not such a problem, just stick headset on and away you go....

Getting better Nokia....

Forget the Nokia 9500 check out the Motorola MPx. If SE wants to survive the next year it better be anouncing phones that are either far better then both the 9500 and the MPx or at least close to the two. Anyone else agree?

Posted by gforce23
.... and SE will certainly release a phone that is better than the Moto MPx.

That's for sure, but "when" is the question. Motorola has already launched theirs, SE hasn't.

IMHO the 9500 and the P900 are two different TYPES of mobile devices and should not realy be compared.

Posted by im92109210
looks guys i just feel the nokai 9500 and p900 are not competeting look the p900 is for the young touch screen hungry business man , and the 9500 is for the previously loving 9210 guy who loves the keyboard more than the touch screen and common guy the differnces are little , i own a p900 and very willingly will buy a 9500 but iam not replacing the p900 , get it , they are the holders of the title best two mobile phones ...
