what is a smart phone? a PDA phone?

Or just a phone with many functions?? Like my Z600? pretty damn smart in my opinion

Posted by Flying Finn
I can think of a few criteria

-a powerful 3rd party OS allowing access to all of the phones resources
-application multitasking
-c++ apps, not just java

Posted by Vlammetje
ah.... but OS does not NEED to be 3rd party if the manufacturer can come up with it's own solution

Z600, 6230 etc are still pretty dumb.

i think that comment was pretty dumb

"2 out of every 5 cellphones in the world are made by nokia"... there is no denying it, nokia outsells everyone, now weather you care or you don't care, I also don't give a sh***... these are facts and they stand as it is...but if you are sensible enough, you can ask your self, "there must be something that nokia does well that others need to do better or has to play catch up with nokia"...

Your list doesn't mention maybe the most important smartphone feature: the ability to develop and install native applications. T630 or 6230 doesn't offer that.

Posted by Vlammetje
it's not my list it's quoted and it's not a full list, it specifically says 'may include' and it was posted to try and hammer the point through to certain thick skulls, that the word smartphone is not universally defined, hence ppl can continue to argue forever

There are two people whose posts I can smell all the way from here: one is Malinda, the other is Flying Finn. There's nothing like some good old Nokia propaganda combined with what I assume is misplaced national pride. And for the record, I wouldn't call the 6600 smart...

I do find it amazing how some people refuse to realise that a Symbian OS powered device with extremely capable software and applications is a smartphone. Maybe they should try the phone?

Adding a better screen and a camera to a phone which is operating system-wise only an evolution from the T68, doesn't make it a smartphone. It's the same with 6230 and, say the 6310i. There's more features and they are better but if you start decoding the package it looks pretty much the same. While Symbian OS is closer to Windows!

Jesus can't we just agree that Symbian OS/Pocket PC/whatever makes it a smartphone. (no, because you're all too busy worshiping your Z600's and T610's)

I advise if you have a T610/Z600/T630 and you think it's a smartphone, try a P800 or P900 and wake up to the truth (or don't, if it causes harm to your Nokia bashing politics).

Alternatively, if you are a blind, Nokia-hating SE fan and think the 6230 is a smartphone, without actually ever having tried the phone, or perhaps even read the specs, try it first and then a 6600 and wake up to the truth (this is seems to be more effective, since Series 60 users are often dissapointed by new promising Nokias being in their opinion the dumb old Series 40).

Not meaning to insult anyone.

well, mixin, my dear, it is because we are on an Ericsson-based forum now. if this were a Nokia-based one then SE would be the "dark side".

anw there're no denying that the 6600 belongs to the smartphone classification. it may not be the brightest bulb in the bunch, but that doesn't make it a candle.

Posted by Vlammetje
not trying to deny it's a smart phone trying to establish some common criteria as to what is a smart phone.

For the sake of argument, let's stick to pda-phone for comparison reasons.

And flying finn, not needing a pda or pda-phone, i seriously see no reason why i should buy a p800/900.

N6660 goes for 450 to 500 euros offline over here.

Back to the original topic: best selling smart phone says a lit about it's popularity, but little on it's specs/functions in comparison to other models.

So not sure anyway where all thi si getting at.

Finally,.... there is no dark side. Even if this is a oriented forum, doesn't mean we cannot appreciate a good model by any other company. N6600 is most succesfull and I've met quite a few happy owners of it.

So it's not for everybody. So what? neither is the P900 for that matter.

Wouldn't it be nice if everybody could just leave all others in their value for a change?

...coz it's alot cheaper than SE? any other reason why?!

I'll try my best to differentiate a Smartphone from a PDA phone...

A smart phone is a phone with enhanced capabilities especially the possibility of installing robust 3rd party applications of different uses (not just cheap java games). A PDA phone is primarily a PDA (common types are Palms and Pocket PCs but now also Symbian) with some phone functionalities.

For those not familiar with Microsoft phone softwares, they actually made two types which differentiates a smartphone from a PDA-phone. They made a Windows Smartphone OS (used by the SPV, Tanager, etc.) which resembles a phone OS because you use a keypad and a joystick. They also made a Pocket PC Phone Edition (used by the XDA) where you primarily use a touch screen and stylus. Functionalities are also different... smartphones act like normal mobile phones while PDA-phones act more like PDA's.

By following this line of thinking the 6600 is indeed a smartphone. The XDA2 and the coming motorola MPx are PDA Phones. And the P800/900 is somewhere in the middle... With regards to the communicator, it can be considered a PDA Phone or something in the middle (the Communicator resembles the old Win CE handheld PCs).

How come no SE fanatics post any sales figure of P900 or T610.
Are the figure too puny or are you too ashamed to provide the figure?

Taking info from one of poster, just imagine this, if half of units sold by SE is T610, which comes to 4m units per quarter. This would be less than 10% of Nokia. Just look at the 6600. It over sold 2m in that period and it is higher end phone. For Nokia mid-range (e.g 6610, 7250), it will obviously beat the T610 by a significant margin

So what so great about T610?

Over here, nobody really care to look at SE as its product are overpriced for its functionality and the price will tumbled after 2-3 months of release. Not a wise buy at all.

I only see someone with P900 occasionally, but I see 6600 everywhere.

Now I see some SE fans will be pulling their hair out and knocking their heads against the wall.
