Wi-Fi.. IBM cooperation.. Could be Series 80 instead of 90 but that's fine by me as long as the device is smaller than the previous Communicators..

"The tri-band GSM (Global System for Mobile communication) phone will support IEEE 802.11b wireless LANs as well as EDGE (Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution), and GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) for data communications. It runs on the Nokia Series 80 software platform, which is based on the Symbian Ltd. operating system. Nokia estimates the 9500 Communicator will sell at retail in Europe for about €800"

can't wait!! man i really hope it has wi-fi (ok i'm 99.9% about that) and sd cards and ofcourse it has to have a touchscreen......
but will it be 3g? i think it's going to be gsm....

btw: so nokia is revealing it on 3gsm cannes? that's strange i tought they are going to introduce new phone on cebit.....

ok so god please! we want a GOOD design not another 7700 please!!!

Posted by Flying Finn
Series 80 indicates no touch screen but that's ok by me if the device is smaller than the previous Communicators.

Here is a FAKE picture btw

Posted by Sutitan
Prices estimated about 1k USD?!?!?! Ill save my money and buy me a good new computer.

Posted by 701
Yeah, a tablet pc And my trusty T610

Posted by #1
Yeah, @701, a Tablet PC is a good choice here.

Posted by Flying Finn
It will cost the same if not less than the P900 (~800 euro) so what's your problem?

Posted by Flying Finn

only got one camera then? so it won't be 3g?

Posted by Flying Finn
No 3G, but GPRS/EDGE/WLAN/WiFi

WLAN is free in the biggest Finnish cities

Posted by petrutms
still too big for my taste! My p800 is really small compared with that! I hate big and heavy phones...And p900 smaller too...I hope that the P1000 will have Wi-lan and all the things that p900 does`nt have!

Posted by Flying Finn
Looks like they have changed the location of the microphone/earpiece from behind of the phone to the front.

Still a brick !!

Posted by psikey
Compare it to other portable keyboard devices & not with phones then its not such a brick. Where the P800/900 is more phone then PDA this is more PDA with phone.

Will be keeping an active interest but it needs to be much thinner that the old one, about thickness of the old Psion Revo would be great!

You havent even seen it!
Just wait a little bit.
It's got a diet vs previous communicators.

Posted by mmsman
I actually like it! i would buy it but the non touchscreen is really a downside of this phone (something like no wlan on p series...)
so i don't think i'm gonna replace my p yet......
oh well i guess i have to see it in real life, but i like the design a lot better than 9210 and 7700....
good job nokia!

Posted by bart
small external screen, and looks very long. yep another brick

Posted by gforce23
Looks quite ordinary. My P900 is much much better.

Posted by mmsman
well yeah p900 looks waaaaaaaay better than this but hey it's good for nokia....

Posted by Flying Finn
How is the P900 much much better? The 9500 has

-80MB internal memory
-WLAN, EDGE
-full QWERTY keyboard (I think it is an alternative for touch screen)
-a better camera (even if it's only VGA, it's newer)
-a horizontal screen

The size.. yes it's still big but it's a hell of a lot smaller than your laptop. To me the P900 looks like a tech geeks toy next to it.

Posted by mmsman
well i mean the design and so does he probably
kinda touchy aren't we mr finn

Posted by gforce23
Anyway, SE rules.

Posted by bart
the communicator can't be compared to a P900. there both 2 diffirent worlds.

Posted by bohdan
Personally I'dont like design of 9500. Matter of taste waitnig for full specification....

Posted by Flying Finn
Two different worlds huh.. yet people at Esato compare the P900 with the 7700! The fact is, the 9500 is Nokia's top smartphone/PDA and the P900 is SE's.

I think, the Nokia 9500 won't sell good, becouse it is to big, heavy and mebay useless EDGE. Sorry Flying Finn.

I own the P900 and i'm very happy about it,but the P900 is still impressiv for it's class. And very good connetivy.

80 MB intern memory, yah sure look how big the 9500 is.
WLAN is a good point, but EDGE i don't use it in holland and also in Holland is no support EDGE i think,so it's useless to me and other people's in Holland to.

Better camera............its VGA even it is old or new it still VGA with the same resolution.

The screen,i doubt that. The screen from the P900 is big enough to me.

Posted by Vlammetje
it sure is impressive

I've had the 9110 and the 9210 and I thought they were damn good devices. I hope this one keeps up that good tradition

Posted by bart
i personally am not impressed, i read that samsung is lanching a normal MP-3 phone with 96mb internal. and the size make the phone only usefull for business people who forget to look up the P900

And then? You wouldn't be impressed even if Nokia would lauch a phone which will take you to the moon. That's one of the SE fanatics basic features. Oh well, maybe you'll be impressed when SE launches phone with W-LAN and/or EDGE.

i would be impressed if nokia would make good phones

Posted by axxxr
Excellent Specs but shape & Size not to my likeing!!..Overall i think it doesnt quite make the grade!!..Sorry Nokia but u could have made this so much better!!

Posted by gforce23
I agree with u.

Posted by Satsuma
I would more impressed if they were going to make this available in May/June rather than Q4 of this year.

By that time, at least one SE with WiFi will also be announced and imminent.

It is possible by then that a MS Windows smartphone with similar features will also be on the market.

Nokia have delayed a new communicator for ages and they should have aimed for Q2 this year to steal a march on the competition.

Posted by jack00
i hear some voices which say that the first phone which is better than the p900 is a nokia [with some smiles next to the sentences] ... but - the heck, it was time that something like this happens, the p900 just gave the p800 platform more live - P800/P900 were very very long the best phones on the market something like this had to happen - after nokia released the new communicator its time for another great hit from se - i don't think that they are going to introduce the next P at cebit [maybe] they have anoth time to get out a communicator killer

And what are the technologies/features that you would liked it to have so that it would have been "so much better"?

if some say that the Px00's are bricks, then this must be a cement block...

The size of the 9500 is dictated by that of its screen. It's as simple as that. And it has a full keyboard.

Posted by davo87
Maybe if the dollar stays so low we are all in for cheap phones like this, i mean $1k USD may sem a lot but thats nearly 500 UKP, so not sooo bad, but still way to expensive

Posted by mmsman
well i have to say that this is an excellent phone and has incredible features....
BUT i have to say that i expected a little more because i don't really thing it will be so special in q4 but hey we don't know what phones are going to be out then........
if you ask me they could add this things to 9500 (most of the things are already availbele at motorolas and sharps and samsungs so don't tell me they wiil drain battery ffs it's a 220g phone it's heavier than an ipaq)
1.3mp camera
262k colours
UMTS
touchscreen
sd slot
xscale 400 mhz
128mb ram
an outside 128*160 screen (because of the design)
bluetooth 1.2 100m
advanced graphics chip (something like the new ati one (for fast video and camera capabilites)
two cameras for videoconferences
.......

so it's really far from perfect and considering that p800 is more than one year old and it's going to be 2yrs old when 9500 comes out.....

even eldar murtzain stated that p1000 and 9500 will be out at the same time, though i'm losing faith in this guy i believe this could be correct because it will be 1yr from the p900 release at that time...

don't get me wrong i still think that it's amazing but i just got a litlle annoyed when you die hard nokia fans were defending it like it was your child, i mean it's ironic most of the guys here are defending se like it's heaven and then you guys want to have a payback with them and you start to sound exactly the same- stupid!

btw: those specs wouldn't hurt p900 also i just wan't to say that no phone is perfect and if someone says it isn't good in his opinion why do you jump up and be " mister know it all "
after all forums are a place where people tell THEIR opinions....

Communicator users know how good the QWERTY keyboard is and I think they want to keep it that way. It's easier, more laptop-like. And it can't be made much smaller than it is now (look at 6820, it's a little cramped). Besides, a touch screen with a QWERTY keyboard wouldn't make sense.

What I'm saying is, if you have ever used a 9XXX phone, you know it's a very working design. An intuitive, normal Nokia phone interface on the top and a very capable PDA underneath it. During a call just open the phone and the loudspeaker switches on and you can work with the PDA. Doing something with a PDA and suddenly have to stop? Just close it, the apps remain running, the PDA screen is protected by the cover and you can literally put a computer in your pocket.

Right now, this would be my PDA of choice. It's got the features and ease of use of a laptop in a phone sized device. Fast typing, no worrying about keeping the touch screen clean, no taking care of the stylus. Just functionality.

btw. Cisco, Symantec, Computer Associates, Oracle, HP and SAP are Nokia's official partners with the 9500 and are already developing apps for it. Expect the SDK to become available before the release too (so there will be apps and content to download from day 1).
