I was just trained on this a few weeks ago, really cool stuff. Starbucks and McDonalds are the biggest players as far as providing the connections.

I guess we're talking about WiFi, or wireless networking and in the UK BT Openzone is the main provider of hot spots.

I've been using it since trials started about 9 months ago and they have close to 2000 hot spots now last time I checked their complete hot spot list including the McDonalds chain.

Starbucks service is provided by T-Mobile HotSpot

MegaBeam is another big player in Uk and Europe and I believe these companies are starting to offer roaming agreements too.

Personally I have a wireless network at home made up of a

D-LINK DI-624 which supports 802.11g

in conjuction with a D-LINK DSL-300G+ ADSL modem

and use a Sony Vaio V505AP with 802.11b

and a HP iPAQ 4150 with 802.11b

I personally think WiFi is going to be more popular than GPRS eventually due to the obvious speed advantage and it may even give 3G a run for its money and latest WiFi standards have been able to achieve a distance record of 131km so far! also, just recently BT announced trials of their new WiMax service based on the 802.16 standard in rural areas around the UK.
