Hey all, couldn't really figure where to post this thread so i put it here!

I have just tried to upload a file using www.uploadit.com and they are now charging people to use their service. They are offering a free trial but the file size is limited!

Does anybody know of any other FREE sites where i can upload files or pics so that i can display them in Esato forums???

Cheers in advance

Scott b

Av u tried searching with the search option yet?I use uploadit,ok 4 me,try making pics smaller. :-)

I tried to ask about that myself some weeks ago but the only thing i ended up with was a norwegian host. So it will probably not help you that much.

same here, i need one for uploading theme previews, how about creating a free web and using it to upload files?

Which ISP are you with? Don't they provide a bit of free web space?

I mean, like AOL or NTL do, I think several of the other big players do too.

Cheers

I think i will just use a section of my web site for uploading

@scott

Yeah, that's what I do, works fine!

If you need an ftp program, do a google search for ace ftp. Works great and it's free

@mkush

The img src or BB img codes just point to the absolute address of the image, so if your website is at 'www.mysite.com', and you have a folder within your site called 'images' that contains the picture you want to display, your code would point to 'www.mysite.com/images/my_image.jpg'

It's exactly the same as displaying images on a webpage using html, except obviously you can't use relative addressing (/images/my_image.jpg), only absolute addressing.

Likewise, if you want to link to a file then yes, you do just display the absolute addy of the file, eg. www.mysite.com/my_theme.thm

Bear in mind though, that if you want wap users to be able to download stuff directly from your site, you will need to set the MIME types for your server.

@Cycovision

Yeah im def gonna do that now. I use Dreamweaver MX it has built in FTP, its very good.

The only concern i have is that i don't want other people who are visting my site, coming across my images. This is my business's website u see!

Any ideas or tips?

.htaccess or chmod the folder/images

Just stick your images in a folder that is not linked to anywhere in your main site.

For example, create a folder structure such as '/personal/esato/images'

It will not interfere with the functioning of your main site.

Actually, you don't even need to do that, as long as you're site doesn't link to the files or images, any visitors to your site won't know that they are there! It's good housekeeping to have seperate folders for different stuff, that's all.

Search engines might pick the files up when they spider, but they're unlikely to find anything other than html, php, asp or images.

@cycovision,cheers m8 great way to get around what matey boy wanted(size of files),and wat would the max file size b?would it depend on amount of space or isp? bloody good idea to do that, whoever's idea it was. :-D

Posted by Cycovision
Yeah, it depends on how much web space and bandwidth your ISP or host provides, but bearing in mind that jpg's and mobile files are small, it shouldn't be a problem for most people. Certainly not if your simply using your web space to host images to display on forums. There is no maximum file size as such for uploading using ftp.

It was nobody's idea as such! Upload sites are simply web sites hosted on a web server the same as any other site, they just provide an upload script via a web page so that you don't need an ftp client, that's all

www.mmsstorage.com

allows you to upload to the web and then download to phone via wap

Supported file types (size max 0.5 MB):

- Image files (jpg, gif, png)
- Ringtone files (mid, mmf, amr, mp3)
- Movie clips for mobiles (3gp)
- Java and Symbian Applications (jar, sis)

Free too

so does www.euploader.com but that's not what the original poster was after

Kool ,what bout thm. Files? It would b good to use that to store me files 4 fone,so if i want to change anyting, just DL wherever i.am,all tho that will cost me. but i still want to use webspace 4 posting pics on forum(which is free),and mayb links to thm. Files...etc

Posted by sn3ipen
@cyovision

Euploader.com is only for wap and the files will be deleted within a hour.

Posted by Cycovision
Yeah, euploader allows .thm files, not sure about mms storage although I would have thought they do.

Then again, if your web host allows it, you can use your own web space to transfer files via wap as well, with the addition of one little file:-

http://notdavidbailey.com/htaccess.txt

Download the above file, upload it to your server via ftp and rename it to '.htaccess'. You should then be able to access your site via wap and download your themes, images, games, ringers etc.

Like I said, only works on certain servers. It definately works on Linux/Unix with apache.

@speedooh

True, but you can archive images for up to a week. Again, it's not what the original poster was asking for though.

So, the file i'd DL would b. Htaccess.txt - them rename,b4 upload? To htaccess.htaccess ?? Yes or am i a bit lost :-D

Posted by Cycovision
You can rename it before uploading it to your server, but it should be called JUST .htaccess

It's a special kind of file that doesn't actually have a file name! It only has an extension, and that extension is .htaccess

The reason that I upload it first and then change the name is because my ftp software doesn't like the .htaccess file, it refuses to upload it because it thinks that there's been a naming mistake!

Posted by mkush
Right,so what ftp u using? Ftp pro , thats what i'll b using,but would easier to upload then change to .htaccess if some ftp's don't like it.

Posted by Cycovision
I use AceFTP, cos it's free

Actually, other than the not liking .htaccess files it's pretty good. It does everything you need and is fairly well organised and easy to use. Very similar to CuteFTP
