I just recently had a 'trojan' virus in my PC, about 4 days now. I tried looking for it (got it from the net), tried locating it thru my files but just failed. I have doubts here that the Symantec Norton Co. just made it up to renew my anti-virus registration with them, mine will expire next week. Is the trojan virus that deadly ?, what if I failed locating and deleting it from my PC ? , will it create havoc? I looked for it's specs, and the threat was only at it's lows, nothing to be afraid here I suppose . . . What gives ? Help !
Posted by Cycovision
What trojan is it supposed to be?
Generally, If you followed all of the instructions for indentifying and removing it as given on an independent site (not bloody Norten and the like), and couldn't find any of the files or registry enteries on your PC then it's a fairly safe bet you haven't got it.
This is why I like AVG. It's free, it's unobtrusive and more importantly, it works really well.

at the moment i'm using PCcillin because i get it free. it seems to do the job, and this latest version got some fairly sterling reviews. prior to that i was a Norton user.

@cycovision - I guess the virus trojan comes in various forms/models if I can safely say here . . . I just forgot the one intruded my PC, though it's been inside the sytem for 4 days now, and my PC is just doing the normal thing. I am just not used to having/seeing viruses when updating my files with that of Norton, if so, they were easily deleted nor removed in the past. My apologies again @cycovision for having not remembered the whole specs of the trojan virus I am telling you about, lest, I am very thankful . . .

I haven't had a virus sice the Marijuana virus way back when I had a 386 based PC. Since then I have always "used protection" and after many years of using mcafee I switched last year to Norton Internet Security which includes a firewall and spam filter too.
IMHO its the better product for all round protection.
I haven't seen the mydoom virus yet but I get lots of fake bank and ebay emails trying to get me reveal my account and password details and these are another form of attack on us I guess
Posted by *Jojo*
@masseur - you really mean a marijuana virus (ha,ha,ha,ha,ha,). Maybe they will also come up with a name, cocaine virus . . .

yeah, actually its main name was stoned.standard

Norton is certainly a very thorough AV / PFW app but unfortunately I find it a bit too heavy for lower spec PC's (I've only got an Athlon 750Mhz, 256MB RAM).
It seemed to take ages to load on startup and every time the firewall popped up a message, the flippin' PC froze for a few seconds!
Now I use Grisoft AVG and Agnitum Outpost PFW and my comp behaves itself much better. I would recommend both of these apps to anyone with older PC's.
Agnitum Outpost is freeware too, by the way

Myself,i would prefer to pay 4 my av, as i tink that the small amount of money is worth paying to protect my pc. No1's mentioned sophos anti v ,i tink this is the kiddy. While av'in this ,have had no viruses.
Posted by Vlammetje
I don't mind paying for av, it is most certainly worth the money, however I have installed avg freeware on my pc whilst looking around and found that it very much does all i need it to do and it's free.... so it simply stayed on ever since
Posted by Cycovision
Oh yeah, I'm not suggesting that people shouldn't pay for AV and PFW software, It's just that the two apps I mentioned are very good and happen to be free as well, so that's even better isn't it?
Posted by mkush
Oh Yes of course, free is always good. But personally i got too much stuff to lose,so i want to make sure i'm protected.

it seems two virus writers are having a war..
f-secure.com/v-descs/netsky_f.shtml
NetSky.F worm variant was found on 3rd of March 2004. This variant spreads itself in e-mails as an executable attachment.
The following text string is present in the worm's body:
Skynet AntiVirus - Bagle - you are a looser ! ! ! !
This indicates an on-going competition/war among virus writers of the currently widespread malware: Bagle and NetSky. This NetSky worm variant tries to remove Bagle worm infection if it finds it on an infected computer.
so in other words they are so bored with writing viruses that they are having a turf war with other virus writers.
bastid virus writers

SMS Phantom is a freeware messaging service that allows you to send text SMS messages
from your PC to mobile phones all over the world. This is the most convenient way to
send text SMS messages from your PC.This is the 'coolest' way on the web to get in
contact with your friends and family and send them the SMS messages while you are at
your desktop. A web application integrates with the software and allows you to send

A buddy of mine let his Norton expire, got a virus, lost everything. I got one same way, but was able to get info back. Got norton back, bought an external HD, transfered all info I wanted to it (norton stopped the virus from going over), reinstalled everything.
My company got nailed with the "lovebug" virus years ago. We are talking an email address of about 18000 people. Know who opened it? IT. 4 different people in IT, to be exact.

As I don't delete mail-servers on my mail-server (I want to see where they come from and notify the ISP the sender is using in order to get down the bandwidth used) I can get quite a bit of viruses at times.
Though, what does annoy me is that quite a few ISPs does not really take action on the notices I send out in a standard form with full info, or they act very slow - as netcabo.pt to mention one example; a user from this ISP is still pumping out viruses after over a week's time, and probably the ISP did not notify him / her and cut his / hers connection to the net 'til the problem is fixed.
