Hello all,
Its been a month since i bought my sony ericsson T610. I had been a nokia fan of 8210.. but this one rules the roost of beautiful and aesthetic mobile fones..
I have a GPRS connection where in i can surf the web but its too slow.
So i tried to use the dialup networking wizard of the sony ericsson communication suite and established the connection (GPRS link ) through my InfraRed link of my laptop.
Now, could anyone please tell me .. is there a possibility of me surfing the web from my laptop using this GPRS connection via the Infra red link to my connected T610 mobile??
i can really connect to the GPRS link and a PPP link is established with the client and server IP address and i can ping them too in my laptop.. but as soon as i open my browser(in my laptop) its unable to browse any page.. altho the web icon is displayed on the T610(indicating its connected to the net..!!)..
Could anyone tell me how to do it? Has anyone tried surfing the web from pc using GPRS /IRDA link of T610.. ?

Thanks in advance..
jade..

Yes on o2 in the uk spent 45 mins on the tech line with them talking me through the setup . Your network will give you the special dial up number that must be used to connect via gprs. Hope this is of help.

I'm using my t68i via bluetooth connection all the time - it is a bit slow but it works great.
I saw yesterday that I have downloaded a GIGABYTE of data via my t68i...
Judge for yourself...

Cheers

hello..
thanks for the reply...
yes i have got this special dialup number from the ISP.. but they have asked me try several combo suffixing it with 1,2,3,4 numbers.. i am yet to try out that.. as i have tried some of them and still not working..
but it was a painful and tiring time with the ISP (hutchisson) and they gave me stupid answers like only opera webbrowser supports surfing the net with pc-t610 connected as a modem.. and i didn know what to do.. its sad to hear ISP guys in india dunt have a clue as to how to configure correctly the WAP settings on T610..
they say that a browser (Opera mobile version) has to be installed on t610 and then asked me to get connected to the pc via IRDA.. but as i see from the Opera website that the browser download is available only for P800/P900!!.
I dunt have a clue as to what to do.. as i have already subscirbed for the internet access and paid the subscription feels too..
Can anyone please help me out??

Thanks in advance..

PS: wow ivan kusturin.. great that u are really getting cool bandwidth on t68i.. i envy u!! buhuhu.

@jadeparfait, there is a good chance you are connecting via your phones WAP GPRS connection whereas to do stuff from the PC you need to use an internet GPRS connection. These are two distinct and separate settings. check your data accounts in connectivity, data comm., data accounts, and see if you have a second data account. if so select it and note the CID displayed. you can then click edit and then apn and see what value is in the apn. most carriers use the word internet as all or part of the APN for internet GPRS data accounts, whereas if you see WAP in there someone that will then be for a WAP GPRS type data account.

If you don't have a second data account, or you are not sure that its an internet GPRS data account then call your opertaor for more settings.

If you have what I have described then simply change your dialling string on the PC to be *99***CID# where CID is the number you noted above.

edit: and no, you don't specifically need opera the connection provides a standard internet connection which is exactly the same as if you dial up on a landline, or use ADSL etc etc, only slower of course

Why do operators insist on different gateways for WAP and internet? Any technical reasons why the can't reside on the same ip?

Thanks @masseur verymuch for your patient detailed reply.
Yup. i have this internet GPRS account(hutch_www) installed on my data comm\data accounts settings on my T610.
This is the second account apart from the wap GPRS account(hutch_gprs) on the data accounts settings.

I would just run down on my current details here...
Data account = hutch_www
CID = 1
APN = www ( this is the default settings received by the Hutch ISP and they say it is correct).

Now, coming to my laptop,
I have windows 2000 running with the latest t610 modem scripts installed from the sony ericsson website. So i use the IR modem of T610 for my internet GPRS connection.

I use the dial up networking wizard from the sony ericsson comm suite and create a new settings with respect to the internet GPRS data account given by HUTCH..
and i use the phone number "*99***CID#1" and got connected at 115200 baud.. !!(altho the max is 64kbps!!) without any hassles.
Now the connected (through my IR) settings are as follows..

Server type - PPP
Transports - tcp/ip
authentication - PAP
compression - none
PPP multilink framing- off
Server ip - 10.15.0.1
Client IP - 10.15.0.247

Now the real problematic part!!!
I just cant connect to the internet. My browser Internet Explorer 6.0 gives me dns error and unable to open any web page..

So it looks like the configuration is correct and yet i am unable to browse!!

Hello @masseur .. could u please tell me anything wrong with my settings ??

Thanks in advance..
Regards,
Jade.

Hey Ivan Kusturin you mentioned you almost downloaded 1GB of data , that is just great. But can you tell how much speed (in kbps) do you get from such a connection.

Posted by stewie
Not almost.Now it's 1.1 Gb...
The average speed depends on time of the day...
It's about 3 Kb/s.
But in the morning it goes up to 6...

Thats decent speed for surfing the net

well assuming that www is the correct APN for internet GPRS access then the only comments I have are that the dialling string should be *99***1#, not *99***CID#1 and I am also surprised that you have a fixed ip address

other than that I'M afraid someone one hutch will prob have to help you further with the settings.

Have you tried the wap settings on sonyericsson.com/fun it is a dial up setting which is different from the GPRS settings we get from hutch/orange. I wonder if it makes any difference.

i am sorry masseur.

yup u r right. it was a typo here while writing it. and btw, its not static ip.. i showed u my settings when the connection is established.. so its dynamic and .. there is blank(...) in my ip settings of the hutch_www data account.

So i am standing at the cul-de-sac.. it seems so.. I have already given 2 complaints to the ISP in vain. Let me brief u with my stint with the Hutch GPRS expert this evening!!.. I am going with my laptop and the cell and have asked for the demo of internet GPRS !!

Thanks..
Jade..

I'm in the same boat as Ivan. Free web via o2 gprs over ir on my mac.

It sounds to me like you need your providers proxy, which goes in your browsers settings.

Look in your phones WAP profile for the IP your gprs account uses. Then put this IP into the http proxy of your browser, and put 80 into port. That might get you going.

to those of you who use BT/gprs to access the net with a PC, do you also get the same problem i have where the next time you make or receive a voice call the earpiece volume is turned all the way down?

why does it do that and is there a way around it?

Posted by buckle247
@bosshogg,

how did you get free GPRS, is it using the wap gprs that everyone has for free, or is it internet GPRS, as i have searched the O2 website and have found no mention about internet GPRS setup or configerating your sim card/phone to provide this.

Posted by BOSSHOGG
@buckle

I'm on a standard o2 pandgo sim using the standard free >>WAP<< GPRS account. Assuming you've established a connection between your PC and phone and are able to surf the o2 site, all you need to do is fill all your proxies in your browsers settings with 193.113.200.195 and put 80 in all the ports.

This leads to cookie problems on sites you need passwords on though. Like this one, I need to login in on every post.

hi masseur,

i spent 3 hours with my ISP providers in their den with my laptop and after microscopic investivagation .. we found out that internet gprs settings are ok. my t610 settings are ok.
the settings in my laptop is somehow corrupted i guess.. the web browser didn browse any site failed with unable to open pages error in the win 2000 OS.
The same settings worked in Win XP environment.
And also i have a serious doubt with the usage of infrared. Ever damn connectivity is smooth but i cant browse any site.

Final outcome: use windows XP with t610 serial modem option. Dont use infrared for internet GPRS. The safest bet is the DCU-11 cable.
Be sure to have windows XP service patch 1a installed for some unknown security flaws in WinXP.

Finally i could get to see 3-4 KB/S speed on my laptop. But its choked comes in bursts as i think my ISP is shady!! . I am a bit relieved after a day of formatting my laptop harddisk and loading XP and testing it out .

Posted by masseur
well I am glad you sorted it but I have to confirm that I have previously regularly done GPRS via IR on windows 98SE and have never owned a cable so this is strange

True. It's just here that ya have 2 buy whatever they say. :-( jade if u still have problems i recommend u pm one person called ac he works with hutch and maybe can help u...u on hutch cal?

Posted by jadeparfait
thanks a lot @sony_eric,

i think the real problem lies in Hutch Access.. I seem to connect everytime to their server but, seldom get to surf the web. To be precise, even tho i establish the dialup connection to Hutch Access, i cant access the sites all the time. and sometimes it is choked and incoming data comes in bursts.. so its really difficult to use any messengers.. and also any downloads.. heaven knows how could i..!! download managers are helpful but yet .. connection is very unpredictable.. (.
Could u please give me ur friend 'ac's login id ??

Thanks
Jade..

Login is ac.

Posted by jadeparfait
Btw,
Mr @ac is Absent Ceaselessly!!.

@masseur, I guess i will wind up this topic discussion with my final findings.

Internet connection (not WAP) using T610 IRDA modem works with any Windows OS ( i tried with 98SE, Win 2000 and Win XP). I worked on these and found out that there is no problem whatsoever.

The actual problem lies in the Connection Provider i.e., Hutch in my case ( Hutch Karnataka, India).

Their internet connection is very dubious and it appears that one can easily establish connection but it wont sustain even for a few minutes and even tho the connectivity is there, there are frequent data seizures.. and in the data transmission happens once in a while.

I hope Hutch users in India are listening to this .

Cheers,
Jade.

I can understand ur problem. Even i'm a hutch user. My suggestion is get a real isp. Y spend 499 pm

Posted by jadeparfait
Yup @sony_eric,

Could u gimme any leads on this available ISPs for SE t610 mobile fones??

Whether dsl-net and VSNL accounts can be realised in our T610 email settings??

thanks
jade.
