An archive, much like a real-life archive, is a place where you store stuff you won't be using all the time... ie 'old threads' or threads that got too long or sometimes I guess also threads that were no longer wnated in plain sight.
The archive is not directly accesible for us mere mortals, however it is possible to read some of the archived threads still
