Welcome to Esato.com

I'm tired of people protecting themselves in subject header.

Why do so many posters start their topic with subject 'I might get cursed for this', 'you will hate me for this', 'don't blame me', etc.??? Why are these members so afraid of getting nasty replies that they have to put a protective statement in the subject line? Is that weak or what?

I would appreciate members here at Esato to stand strong and take the heat if it shows up around the corner. Be straightforward and strong!!!

Also, please give a clue in the subject what the post is about. I saw a thread called "which was better?" or "does anyone know about this?". It wastes my time to go into the thread to see what it really is about.

Thanks!

Your all going to hate me for this but..........
I'm very anoyed about people who use the : Roll : smiley, to make the previous poster look silly.

then edit their post for no reason several times without deleting the previous edit statement.

Vlammetje: It depends on what "nothing" is.

One thing I like with this forum is the totaly mix of threads I can find here which is almost anything from technical hints and suggestions to fun simple things people have done, like when they've played with ppl who has forgotten to turn off their Bluetooth.

If there are too many "joke-threads" in the "serious" forums I guess that's because there are no "joke here" forum.

If that's the case I suggest that the moderators create such forum. I've noticed on other forums like the Swedish "sweclockers" that the fun stuff stayed in that forum and didn't bother the other forums.

You mean garbage forums? If yes, there is one in esato.

Posted by Vlammetje
@ pachy:

@ seienusagi (hope I spelled that right!) 'nothing' in my book is a thread where a disgruntled poster posts something that bears no contribution whatsoever to the forum as a whole. Examples are 'do you hate [member name]??', and this thread.

And there is a place for jokes and other funny stuff: it's the garbage section.

I'm tired of people saying 'Please can you send me every Mophun game ever made for free. My email address is scrounger@freebootgincheapskate.com'

But we really can't be so mean to new posters. Welcome them and tell them to

I think there is really nothing wrong with threads which have 'negative/unpressumed' headings. The problem now lies with the members itself if they are disgruntled/angered by the contents of those threads. As they say in 'showbiz' - good or bad publicity, is still a publicity. What I think about those posters who have such 'unassuming' headings are signs of initial 'precautions' that they might get 'flamed' by such 'notorious' 'know-it-all' 'godly' members, and most of them are of the old-timers at ESATO.

If we tell them, they'll forget. If we teach them, they'll remember

@ Mixin

But I really think there is something wrong when new posters feel they have to exuse themselves for asking a question...

Posted by sn3ipen
@vlam: the garbage thread isnīt a "joke" thread cuz we cant post in it. The garbage tharead is made so the moderators can put the post that doesent fit in the other thread.

New topic in garbage thread.

Why is the search this kind of mirical answer? Thats what annoys me. I can understand when some one posts a thread with something plain and stupid like 'Are there any themes for the T610?' but when people ask more detailed questions which ok may have been addressed before the individual gets grilled anyway for not using the search where it is very possible that they have and used the wrong phrase and couldn't find anything about the subject and the people who are guilty of this is the memebers who have been here the longest, thus why newcomers are worried about being grilled and have to put those type of headings for new posts.

Posted by 701
The real problem is the high rate of inapropriate question that bug some of us. They just dont bother to search or to read the 'noob section'. I resent that.

Posted by mixin
but when someone starts a new thread, and someone replies telling them to use the search... the search feature gets clogged up with threads with no answers.

Its not the new threads that are the problem.. its the lack of answers.

Posted by Vlammetje
or it's the complete omnipresence of useless answers, as well as useless threads (like this one) that cloggs up the searvch function.

@ speedooh: once upon a time the garbage used to be the place for jokes and fun, until some day in their infinite wisdom the moderators decided to lock it up so that no new amusing threads could be added, and instead move all 'inappropriate threads' to it. So now the garbage is full of threads that have annoyed ppl and there is little to laugh about anymore.

But if a thread is 'inappropriate', shouldn't the mods just simply delete it? Leaving it on the board will only clog things up more and now there is no place to start a new 'fun' thread anymore. That in my opinion is one of Esato's bigger mistakes.

A good clean up would be nice. Unlocking the garbage for entertainment purposes would also be nice.

vlam> i'm all with you regarding deleting. there are thousands of threads that is not needed on this forum, including this one even though I started it. If the threads are outdated, misinforming, dublicates, or just plain stupid, I think they should be deleted.

However, is see why the moderators refrain from doing that. It is not good for Esato's reputation and decreases the number of posts they can boast. Howard Forums deletes threads right and left without even thinking, and one of my popular threads were one of them, which is why I try to avoid that damn place.

Posted by mixin
Lets look at it this way:
Someone posts a new thread, and they dont visit esato much (or use any forums for that matter) and they come back a week later, to try find thier answer, but its been deleted, because someones decided to either a. threadjack or b. abuse the thread starter.

They then cant find thier thread. And start two new ones...
1. asking the question again
and
2. asking why thier thread was deleted!
its making things even harder.

But then deleting things makes the search easier to use

Posted by Vlammetje
Plenty of forums archive threads after a period of non use, say 6 months. I think that is very reasonable. Of course on occassion one might miss one of those 'old threads' but I doubt that would occur frequently tbh.

Other boards actively remove those that are outdated or are duplicates.

This board has 7 mods. SOMETHING could be done IMHO.

I think that the links to the noobie info (faq's etc.) could be more clearly displayed on the site, particularly the Homepage and Forum Home page.

It's probable that alot of first timers find the sites homepage, click on one of the thread headers and then realise that they have to sign up for the forum. So, they sign up and immediately post a new thread.

If the faq threads were more clearly displayed, they might click on those links before wading into the forum, and have their questions answered immediately. People are impatiant when they get a new toy, they want answers NOW!

Particularly if they've never been on a forum before, they're bound not to understand the rules and etiquette.

EDIT - Yeah, I know that the link to faq's in the forum topics list isn't exactly hidden, but I still think it could be clearer! Maybe have it as a large link right at the very top of the topics list? Same thing somewhere on the homepage? just a thought!

Hi all,can someone tell me where i can upgrade my Ericsson a2618 pls? Thx in advance! :-D

Posted by Krubach
I hate threads that should be already in the garbage thread, but are still wandering among other threads that are not garbage threads.

Is this too much threaded to you?

Posted by 701
@Vlamm:i asked the same question about archiving threads a year ago but they flamed me4it . That's why the search is almost useless.

amagab,

i too cant stand these efing idiots that write this senseless crap but you know what, i've realised that not everyone shares my sense of humour, intellect level or sheer tech saviness on the subject of mobile phones and the like...so they are all forgiven for their own stupidity.

except MiXiN of course, cos he has a pink P800 that doesnt even look gay, just odd depending on lighting conditions, then again, i havent even seen it up close....or in person, him or the phone that is...anyway, some will flame me for this but i dont give a sh**...most people on esato are little hitlers, a$$holes, stupid and probably ugly too...but i forgive everyone of them for their stupidity in not knowing how to use the search, not knowing how to ask a question correctly, not knowing how to title their thread or even put it in the right category...thats right, all is forgiven...even though i was a newbie once i was never as stupid as some....can you tell i'm taking the pi$$?...Tuesday night and i'm bored...oh and another thing...this loving SE sh** is even worse...i love Sony Ericsson...more than my girl, my phones like my baby....get a life please....and reserve one for me while your there

lol, you saw it! appologies for that! Yeah, a few of the posts in this thread (and others) really got me mad yesterday, but I quickly calmed down and deleted the post.

Just needed to get it out of my system, that's all

We all have those days!

I blame phpBB for the lack of deleting threads
instead of the lock function.. it shld be a delete function

if a mod doesnt want a topic to be posted in anymore, move it to a special "locked" area and be done with it
give regular users the privilege to read there but not to post

but yes, a good clean up is needed
maybe remove all existing threads older than a week and start a new?
then truly no one cld type "search the forum"
a fresh start, a clean start

Posted by 701
@Cycovision: u know u as a "cool-head", not a "hot-head"
@Tanquil: we know it and they know it- the forum needs a good sweeping but its sooo hard to start it cuz it takes a lot of time and co-ordination.I can understand the mods..and laffen but i am pretty sure they'll do it! And ur ideea about a "locked" section is good! It happens a lot lately when i surf it from wap (what do i say, always surfin from wap ) to get locked threads.I hate it..u read 10 posts, get all flamed-up and u wanna reply...not allowed!

Posted by masseur
actually, whenever I am searching for answers to questions and spot rubbish threads in my search results I tend to remove them so I am doing a bit of cleanup I guess, but considering there are more than half a million messages out there it hardly scratches the surface of the problem.

Posted by 701
@Masseur: yeah,if u guys don`t have a n agreement to make "the big cleanup", u can continue to "scratch the surface" ...in time, it'll make a diff`rence
