I just discovered that the P900 can be used as a magnet. The speaker on the back of the phone obviously has some sort of magnetic component, I can pick up paper clips with it, woohoo!
Posted by masseur
most speakers have magnets in them though that one sounds mighty powerful compared to most in mobile phones
Posted by scotsboyuk
I wonder if it could cause damage?
Posted by masseur
you might scratch your phone if you pick up anything sharp I suppose?
Posted by vampyriaerotica
When I use to have my Ericsson 388 about 7-8 years ago, I remember the speaker area can lift objects similar to and as heavy as £1 coin, even more.
Posted by scotsboyuk
WOW!
Posted by grex
hi, i've got one of the most advanced phones in the world, and i'll be mostly using it for....lifting paperclips! i also have a which i use mostly for going shopping on a sunday.

How interesting... but yet another worthy feature of an already useful phone... you do realise that Sony will probably include this in the product description now... and you just watch the increase in sales
You should mention this in a few other topics too... you should offer an update to those who need to know what the phone can do... but did I also notice a topic about attracting the fairer sex with a P900 (not the correct wording i am sure)... just think of the effect this discovery could have on piercings... where ever they may be !
Posted by parvski
wonder if the magnetic properties gets stronger as you increase the speaker volume??
Posted by scotsboyuk
In theory an increase of power should increase the magnetic properties of an electro-magnetic field, that is unless of course there is another electro-magnetic field with the same wavelength operating perpendicular to the wave orientation of the initial field.
I hope this answers your question in a clear and concise manner
Posted by hurny
We shall call it....'clipjacking'
Posted by scotsboyuk
Top stuff. I lay claim to being the first clipjacker, all bow before my obvious superiority. Moo ha ha ha ha ha ....
I wonder what other little tricks the P900 can be made to do.
Posted by skabbe
i think you will loos the magnetic feild from tha magnet if you increase the volume...
Posted by scotsboyuk
I concur. Its all do to with the law of unexpected and silly consequences.
Posted by KSE
Can it bend spoons with it's new found power... that'd make Uri Gellar redundant too...
Look what your discovery could do.!!!
I hope you are prepared for the consequences !

Please send me the software to allow me to pick up metal objects with my phone:
spamme@iamamuppet.com

Thank you for sending the software - that was very quick.
I have tried it with my P800, and it is only able to move (not lift totally) standard (BS124389 part 3) office paperclips.
Is this because I have the wrong firmware?
Sweet - any chance of hacking the software for my P800???

Ru...
Somehow I don't think you will "attract" a favourable reply !
Posted by scotsboyuk
Did you notice he gave a funny e-mail address? Wise guy!
Posted by Ru
I would also like the software to store lifted items on the memory card, rather than the back of the phone...
Posted by KSE
Oh c'mon... this superb feature has only just been discovered... the technology is still in it's infancy...
You would be limited in storing them on the memory card though... you do know that... since SE only allow us to use 128MS Duos at present... UNTIL THEY UPDATE THE SODDIN' FIRMWARE, you will get around 3-4 or on there at best... although I have made a DUO which incorporates a little dip switch, will allows you to store another 3-4 on the other side of the card... ingenious really, I wonder how no-one else thought of it
Posted by Ru
lol
How many clips can I store on the 512Mb duo-pro-wonder card that I've just ordered?
Posted by KSE
Ru...
Think you will have to send that one back... because... I don't know if anyone has mentioned this before, but the P900 can ONLY use 128MB duos, and so you will not be able to use the wonder card you are awaiting in the phone...
Therefore, you will have no way of using the Phones' magnet hardware and software to store the paperclips on the card, unfortunately... though may I suggest you buy more than one 128MB Duo and hang them from a key chain... this is a really useful tip i pass on the the selected few... just think how many paper clips you could carry around with you then!

Has anyone tried to pick up anything else? I'm currently trying to pull a car out of a ditch it rolled into. The lady who was driving (it would be wouldn't it?) is frantic, luckily for her I have my trusty (and newly magnetised) P900 with me. One quick flick of the wrist and I will have her car on the road again.
Posted by KSE
Scotty...
Thats all well and good, but you won't be able to store it in the memory card, you do realise that ... because... you can only use...!... well you know the rest, I think someone mentioned it earlier...
Everyone take note, Scottys supercharged magnetised telephony device may just make him the next superhero... keep an eye on the news tonight...
Posted by hurny
Is there any 3rd party software to convert these aquired paperclips to videoclips?

Funniest thread in a while. lol

Do you think this might affect my memory in any way as i have a steel plate in my head
So i said to the shopkeeper what 50p for an apple you must be....

Personally I am fascinated to see how this new found technology will applicate itself to the issue of mobile phones as jewellry. I can't wait to get my new P900 so I can magnetically attach it to my belly button piercing jewellry and have the swankiest accessory in town ! Of course, this does mean I can also dispense with a carrying case, as my phone can now be stuck to my navel.
Alternatively, I could stick it to my ear piercings instead - pity the phone would be the wrong way around for making calls. Perhaps this could be addressed in a future firmware upgrade.
And I'd have to be careful if someone tried to steal it else they might rip my ear off, - you never know how strong these magnets can be ...

No, but it would be an advantage- you wouldnt have to hold the phone to your ear!

The car is out of the ditch and I didn't need to give away my secret identity. By day scotsboy is a mild mannered joe, using a Motorola. No one suspects that tucked away in his briefcase lies the hidden power of the P900!
One swivel in a revolving door and the Motorola is banished and out comes the P900 (I also make a small curl in my hair) and its time to protect the innocent, defend the weak, uphold justice and prvent the American Way.
All Hail Plucky 900, greatest superhero of them all.
P.S. I am looking for some other superheroes to join me in my quest to rid the world of crap phones and their evil leader, Lord Nokia of the North.

I am afraid that you would have to spend many hours training your magentic friend... think teaching your computer to work with voice recognition, or those tamagotchi things that were popular a few years ago...
The levitation lookalike hands free option would be something worth working towards though, for those with metal plates in their head, although the phone would face the wrong way around, theres always the loudspeaker... SE thought of anything... I wouldn't mind betting they planned this all along...
Has anyone tried it with their P800's... second thoughts I wouldn;t bother... its Fisher Price finish may induce concerns from relatives that you should be sectioned for returning to your second childhood...
EDIT>>> Hurny... don't be silly, you cannot turn metal into video clips... I thought you would be sensible enough the realise that... how daft a question is that amongst such educated and seemingly intelligent folk... and when we are discussing such an important and real topic too! heheheh

scotsboy - your wait is over.
For I have just ordered yet another 512Mb duo-stick-pro-pink card, and henceforth I shall be known as memory-ru.
By day a soft bean-kanga, but when trouble strikes my super expanded memory will come to the rescue!
With 2 x 512 cards, I am sure I shall be able to list and store a stapler!

P800 doesn't have the capabilities anymore, its washed up its gone, its out of here, its kaput, finished, dusted, a done deal, dead, having a sleep, gone south for the winter, etc
You think I'm out of order by saying that? I'm out of order! This whole court is out of order! You want the truth! You can't handle the truth!
In conclusion the chief export of the Panamanian Republic is bananas.
What does the above have to do with my new found magnetic powers? Absoluetly nothing. What it shows is that I am completely and totally insane and relaly need locked up immediately.

Oh.
My P800 is no good now?
Damn.
I'll get my coat...
ps has anyone got the magnetic lift software to work via BT or IR?
Posted by KSE
Ru...
Best hang up yer leotard and start wearing your draws under yer trouser...
Those cards won't bloody work, you will have to return them... and you know why ! though I don't think SE do for some reason... maybe they need reminding again?
Posted by scotsboyuk
@Ru
No welcome aboard my leotard wearing, crime fighting friend. Hmmm, I'm afraid I have taken the sexy moulded hard rubber outfit that will look cool instead of really gay, so all we have left is a pair of skimpy pink knickers and a sleeping mask that we can cut eye holes in.
Any suggestions what we can call our P8/900 force yet? I toyed with the idea of the Slightly Camp But Definitely Hetrosexual Crime Fighting Duo That Lives With Each Other And Raises Eyebrows In Polite Society or SCBDHCFDTLWEOAREIPS for short, but then realised Batman and Robin had that one covered.

My picture is below - I'm about 12" tall; will the outfit fit me?
Maybe someone could photo-shop it on so we can check.
I'd hate it if the knickers and sleeping mask didn't fit properly, cos that would just look stupid.
ps I know I only have a P800, but I've now got four 512mb cards on order. Does this count in the P900 club???

LMAO at how quickly this seemingly pointless topic has rocketed in popularity this afternoon!...its now on fire... I wonder if the magnet can help with that one!
Posted by pachy
HMMMM..... A magnetic P900, ...... spose it has a certain attraction.
Posted by Ru
@scotsboy
"Slightly Camp But Definitely Hetrosexual Crime Fighting Duo"
Is that from SE?
Do they do a 1Mb version, and will it work in my P800?
Posted by scotsboyuk
Your the Memory Man my friend and we need your abilities. Nokia knows no boundaries when inflicting pain and sufferring. Just this afternoon I saw a small child having a Nokia thrust into his hand. He was squealing and crying as his Nokia induced mother wedged the 'phone' into the poor mite's little paw.
I of course ran for the nearest phone box, but of course BT has cut back on phone boxes since mobiles became so popular, bloody mobiles, I ask you!
Ducking into a nearby hedge I quickly changed into my crime fighting costume and readied my P900 for action. The insane harpie of a woman was trying to get the child to listen to that damned generic Nokia ringtone. The child wa sin obvious distress.
Making an extremely loud and embarassing shout in the middle of the street whilst thrusting my hands squarely on my hips and doing my best to refrain from doing the Timewarp, I knew what I must do.
Grabbing my P900 from its holster on my insanely coloured belt emblazoned with the SE logo, I dialled the number of social services.
Quick as a flash social services were round (just ask anyone in Britain about our wonderful social service, envy of the world). The woman didn't know what had hit her. She claimed that it was the child's phone, a likely story, as if a small child of 17 would need or use a phone, how could she put the blame on that sweet innocent little lamb?
The callous cow got what she deserved, pleading her innocence I told the head social worker, a burly eastern european immigrant man dressed in women's clothes (hmmm maybe it was a woman, no the stubble was too thick) to take that bitch away and throw away the key.
Have no fear my friends, the child was taken into protective care until he is 45, until then he will be given all the love, attention, mind altering drugs and hidden physical abuse that a hundred year old dilapitated institution run by a group of sociopathic nuns can give him.
All Hail Plucky900!
Tune in same time, same thread, next week for Plucky900's latest adventure ... Plucky900 and the Carphone Warehouse of Terror!

HA! I laugh at your feeble powers man from the valleys. The power of the Magnet is all encompassing. Your pathetic attempts to thwart our good work will come to naught.
Besides you haven't even got skimpy knickers on.

But i have a nice pointed bra in sky blue
It goes lovely with my new shoes and off the shoulder bag
Posted by scotsboyuk
Don't you just find that? I have some lovely slingbacks and a little diamonte top that I like to wear, but the winter chill makes my nipples stick out so I have had to ditch it.
Where did you get your bag dear?
Posted by welsh uk
The bag came from debenhams they just had the new season in
Pop round for a cup of coffee and i will show it to you

Why thank you dear, I'll pop in on my way back from the hairdressers, give me a chance to tell you about my new curtains, they are simply devine. I having a tupaware party on the 8th, come round and you can see them up close deary.
