hey all, at the moment im strugeling to contact o2 regarding using my mobile to access the internet via my laptop, and if in the end it isnt possible id like to change to a network that allows it :@

Could you please recommend good UK operators that will let me use data GPRS for my laptop, preferably at a cheep rate!

I would like pay as u go, so please give some indication on tarrif/price available. Thanks!

Btw, if anyone has managed to get it working on o2 please let me know how!

Sorry to see that my vague memories about O2 were correct.

Don't know about PAYG but I use Vodafone pay monthly on the Anytime 200 tariff and data costs 2.35 pounds per megabyte

here is their PAYG page but again it only seems to mention WAP, not internet

o2 (UK) does not allow you to connect a laptop/handheld to the net via GPRS on Pay & Go, only through dial-up, am sorry i'm not sure about other networks

in that case, how do i go about setting it up for dialup? whats the difference? :S

...all i wanna do is check my mail from the flat :'(

with dialup GSM you pay for the time you are connected, with GPRS you pay for the data transmitted and received.

dialup GSM speed is usually 9.6kbps whereas GPRS is up to 50-60kbps depending on phone. with T310 you prob get about 45 kbps or so.

well for simply checking my email, i think i'll be able to cope with dial up...can you tell me how to do it?

dialup is easier than GPRS as you don't need any settings in the phone.

Do you have a dialup account to an internet service provider on your PC now?

i dont quite follow what you mean, but i dnt have any isp's setup on the pc if thats what' your asking...apart from the gprs i tried to do

yeah thats what I was asking because then it would be a simple matter of creating a new connection on the pc with the same details but using the T310 IR modem.

You're going to have to get help from someone else now unfortunately because I don't know about O2 dialup. appologies.

so to clarify, obviously it uses the t310 as a modem...but i have a choice of either using a normal isp, OR dialing up o2 and paying the 10p a minute or whatever right? i found these setup details so i hope these are what i need...

O2 WAP settings (dialup):

Homepage: http://wap.o2.co.uk/
Dialup number: 915000 (or +447712 927927)
Gateway (IP) address: 193.113.200.195
Username: o2wap
Password: password
Session type: Continuous / permanent
Port number: 9201
Authentication: Normal

yes you can use a normal ISP if you are dialling up via GSM rather than GPRS but again... I'm not familiar with dialup voa O2 wap but I understand it may be possible to do email but I also believe you may need to find some settings for DNS also.

Sorry to be vague but its the best I can do!

Give it a try! (I wish an O2 person who is doing this would jump in at this point!)

yey that works now, although i didnt realize quite how slow 9.6kbps was going to be! its perfect for sending/recieving email, but when i try to surf the web it normally cuts off...sort of, its still connected but wont work till i reconnect...any ideas?
