many of todays motherboards have a contact for a IR-port... and then you just fasten the IR-port on the chassi of your computer

yep that's right. Most 'post pentium' PC's have that type of connector on the motherboard. And it's really cheaper than those serial to IR cables I've seen so far.

Does anyone know how firmly the standard for these IRDA-ports are followed, ie. can I be reasonabely sure that a cable I buy will suit any motherboard with an IRDA connector?

actually Im using the IR port simular with those pic above. I brought it for 35 canadian
with that 5 pin connector, I can use it connect to my Asus and MSI motherboard. just be sure to adjust the transfer rate to 9600 when under XP. Win98 would be no problem with even maximum speed.
Most importantly, check your motherboard menu b4 doing any decision.

This is slightly more expensive, but fits nicely in a desktop drive bay, and you have 2 sizes to choose from.
I am using this on a ASUS board and works great.

I am using gigabyte (ga6-vem) that has ir headers (the pins) but i dont know what ir port to get for the mobo. I also have no options for ir in my bois (quite new version!!). I am also gong to a ecs motherboard soon that has ir headers, any ideas for that? I am really stuck!!!
