How to backup pictures saved in Contacts?

Hi,

I'm about to embark on a format of the C: drive, and have just realised that I a lot of contacts have pictures associated with them. The pictures don't synchronise with my Outlook Contacts when I sync the phone, and if I go into the Contct details on the phone, the only options with the image are "Delete" or "Replace". "Copy" would be useful!

Does anyone have any handy hints on how it might be possible to save all the pics, rather than make all my friends pose again?!

Edit:
OK, how about backup phone as it is at the moment, format c:, backup phone. Edit the new backup file to replace the new contacts.cdb (or whatever it's called) with the old contacts.cdb from the old backup file, restore phone. God bless the search function!

Yeah, the comments you made under "EDIT" should work.

Good luck.

But here's another tip, for future use.

1)

On your fone, or better still, on the Memory Stick create a directory called Contacts e.g. d:\Media Files\image\Contacts (NOTE: You will not see the "Media Files" portion of the directory tree unless you are using a File Manager. Using the fone itself just go to the Pictures application)

2)

If you mainly take piccies of faces, then start the CommuniCam app and in the top right hand corner of CommuniCam, select the Contacts directory.

Now exit program.

When you now exit the program and restart and then take a piccie, you will find that all piccies you take will automatically be stored in the Contacts directory.

3)

Now go to the associated Contact and select the relevant piccie. As you may be aware ,the piccie is now copied to the "contacts.cdb" file.

And this copy is independent of the one in the Contacts directory on the Memory Stick.

4)

You can now back up the piccies in the Contacts directory of the Memory Stick either individually on to your pc or as part of a full phone backup using the PC Suite

What I do is to copy the piccies over to my pc under a directory called P800\Contacts. If ever I need the piccies again I go there. It's also good if I get bored with a particular piccie; I can use this directory to select a new picture to download to the phone for a particular contact.

5)

So now in future you won't have to get your friends to pose again or mess around with the contacts.cdb file.

I hope that helps

Nice one plevyadophy.

I use 3 MSDs:

1. 16MB: Portable backup of all main applications
2. 64MB: Applications and business data
3. 128MB: Music mainly

My P800 is a small but important part of my life.

I treat my PC as the master and regularly (weekly) restore 1., 2. & ROM drives to former ‘clean’ states, resynchronise and I’m back in business.

I have often lost my pictures of receptionists, waitresses….., it’s heartbreaking. Your idea is simple and works.

I guess I’m thinking out loud. What would be ideal would be to have a ‘my documents’ folder that contained all personal data and personal application data. At the moment, I have to remember to, for example, retrieve the last copy of Personal Jotter’s word database and copy ….. etc. I prefer not to have to use my brain to remember these things.

Any thoughts on generally organising applications and data on multiple MSDs, backing up, restoring and updating your P800 in the least brain taxing ways.

i fail to understand can you explain it in a more accessble manner?

Posted by Fletche
Hi nixin, if your question is directed at me, I’ll try to give a more accessible explanation, if it wasn’t please ignore my response.

I use my P800 as a mobile computer, a bit like a ‘dumb terminal’.

I am a business guy, not a techy.

Years ago, we’d travel around and go to business meetings with our PCs, laptops, projectors (e.g. Barcos), power leads, etc. You needed rucksacks to carry the gear around, not forgetting the 5Kg ‘mobile phone’.

I now mainly carry just my P800 and tell people that I need access to a computer with Bluetooth, internet access and projection facilities, if required.

I don’t carry a brief case, wear suits and don’t worry about my intellectual assets being nicked while I drown myself in airport bars. My assets are all amply protected within my P800, which is stuck in my jeans pocket next to my other valuable assets.

My main ‘home’ computer is the master. It controls my email, remote websites’ content, ftp servers, local website, ftp, all documents……...

My P800 sometimes accesses the master directly using ftp (e.g. FTP800), remote control (e.g. Remote ConTrol ‘BiTween’) to use a document.

Sometimes this document gets changed on the P800 (not too much of a problem at the moment because of the limited editing capabilities on the P800, but even now you down load the document to your P800 edit it on a PC and bring it back into your P800).

Sometime your P800 creates and receives documents e.g. sms, email, file transfer to another device or computer (e.g. via Comobi), photos e.g. airhostess, a note…..

Also some of the programs I use, which are not ‘standard PC applications’ store data that I want to keep e.g. Personal Jotter has learnt some new words and languages (this is a database file stored somewhere on the c drive)…………….

When I come ‘home’, I want to clean up and synchronise my P800.

Why?

Memory wastage – There’s all kind of shit on all the drives eating up my precious memory. (16K cluster sizes rapidly kill the P800).

Masters rule the universe – I have to upload to my ‘home computer’ from the P800 any documents I have modified, created or received, any program data I wish to keep, resolve any conflicts (documents will also have changed on my ‘home computer’) and then download back the master cleaned data back onto the P800.

Oh, shit I forgot to upload, update and download that Handybase database file, my contacts pictures (that plevyadophy spoke about) or more importantly the pics of some chick you met.

Active Sync does a pretty good job of synchronising a very limited subset of the data I store on my P800.

What I would like is an Active Sync that would allow me to synchronise all data on my P800, with an intelligent interface that would allow me to choose what I sync, to what applications or files, how I resolve conflict, what backups I keep for different drives, and what I restore to different P800 drives.

Does this make any sense?

Any ideas?

wow your life sounds real cool like a holly wood business man you must have lots of degrees shooting from country to country i bet you have one of those business contract's with 5000minutes a month whihc you use up in almost 2 weeks!

and your mega rich and have been all over the world and have a wicked car!

is this true!

i admire you sir.

Hi Nixin, my views are that looking at something is very different to being it, you can appear cool, but you never really and truly are.

The number of degrees you have generally reflect your desire to be trained and to be recognised for that training. They do little (can sometimes be destructive) to enhance your intrinsic talents and creativity. Three years bumming around the world will do more for your personal development than a stretch at a ‘University’, but perhaps won’t help you with any ‘factory fodder’ ambitions. But yes like many I fell into the trap of having to prove myself to others.

As one of my role models said – creativity is more important than knowledge - Albert E.

Wealth is an expression of lacking!?

When I drive and I can take my baby with me, I drive an 8 year old Land Rover Discovery, she been with me all over Europe, North Africa and Eastern Europe. She’s more reliable and comforting than any wife or girlfriend has ever been and a darn sight cheaper to maintain.

If you would like a chat about the ‘grass being greener on the other side’ please feel free to call me.

I’m one of the few people on this forum who doesn’t hide behind a smoke screen. Look at my profile, click on the website I’ve put there, scroll to the bottom of the home page and ring either the UK freephone number or dial me directly on the Polish office number, that’s where I am sat right now!

Oh yeah, this is one hell of a cool existence I live, be carefull what you dream, it may well become reality!

Cheers Fletche

so do you have many degree's what in?

what is your cool exsistance?

how can i achieve this?

Posted by Fletche
Nixin, this banter is a little out of wack for the objective of this thread.

If you really want to know the answers to your questions, do what I said above, the UK 0845 number is currently pointed to Poland, or ring the Polish number.

Anyway, back to the thread:
