I know that there are alot of posts about O2 GPRS (and MMS), but can somebody please explain this stuff to me
I am using O2 PAYG, i rang up and asked for my MMS to be available, they said, yeah its been done. I tried downloading the settings, but i can never get it to work i always get the error "User bared", anybody know why this is ?
Also i can connect through my laptop to o2 GSM (300 free mins, online tarrif) and have access to the whole internet.
But i cant get this on GPRS, however on GPRS on my mob i can access wap pages from all over the internet.
What method of blocking are they using, becuase i tried installing a WAP browser on my laptop, but i cant access anything outside the o2 site
Does anybody know how these limitations on GPRS (under the MMS subscription) are running ?

Hi
What access point are you using?
Mobile.o2.co.uk should give you full access to HTTP, provided you are subscribed to a mobile web tariff (you cant have MMS activated at the same time).
If you want full HTTP browsing then you must DE-activate MMS to activate mobile.o2.co.uk (the APN required)
wap.o2.co.uk is limited to wap sites only.
Hope this helps.

My APN is payandgo.o2.co.uk
I want to be able to access these wap sites on my computer, i downloaded a wap browser, but i cant seem to get it to work, any ideas why ?
I can connect fine to the network with this APN, and access http://www.o2.co.uk, so its connected properly.
Also how does the server gateway distunguish between wap and web pages ?

Wap pages end in .wml or .xhtml and normal web pages end with .html . The wap pages are also very small so that you phone can view them. Phone providers restrict the size of data downloaded from a single page. Also did you switch your phone of and then back on again and the MMS should work

Yup i have tried switching my phone off and back on again, i got everything set up about november last year, and i basically just gave up trying.
about the WAP pages, the gateway does not restrict the pages based on their extension, becuase i have requested a wap page through o2 that had an .asp extension (running on my server), it just included wap headers
and if it is restricting the pages based on size, how come i cant acess any pages on my computer through a WAP browser?
hope someone can help me

your network provider will restrict the size of files you can down load to your phone. Thats what i have heard on this forum many times
which website did you get the settings from??

I tried the settings from SonyEricsson website, as well as o2.co.uk, and entered the settings manually from the o2 website. I just cant seem to get it work.
Also, do you have any ideas why i cant get, WAP on my laptop ? (Through my WAP Browser)?

The APN payandgo.o2.co.uk is limited to WAP (& MMS) access only
e.g. O2 Active on handsets.
Although you could still access the O2 website (on a laptop, PDA & P800) or O2 emails (.o2.co.uk).
For others you would need full internet access which unfortunately is not available on O2 Pay & Go GPRS, but only on dial-up!
On your laptop try setting the gateway to 193.113.200.195.
Also try using wsp:// instead of http://.

Poo poo speaks the truth. Tin you can use your gsm dial up for a connection to the whole web on say and go. For a week it was find for me, but now they put the limiter on and is disconnects every 2 mins. Last week i was getting 50+ min connections, FREE!

Thanx Poo Poo for the reply, and BOSSHOGG, i'm doing that as well
Although your answers have been good, i dont kno if i am getting any closer to what i need to kno.
I'll tell you the whole idea, and see if i can get some detialed answers for what i need
Like BOSSHOGG, i wanna use my Laptop for a internet connection through o2, However i find the 9.6 Kbps Slow and unstable, i want to be able to use the GPRS, but i dont want to pay those extreamly high prices, so if i get some more information about the network structure, this is what i intend to do
If i can access a wap page on my server through GPRS on my phone, then that gives the posibility of sending data from a customised location to my phone, if i get the right settings then this could be duplicated with a wap page on my laptop.
I am a programmer, and i think that i should be able to write a simple encapsulation program for the use of http, here are the simple stages
1. Laptop Browser Sends a request for a page
2. My program encodes (and if necessary, splits the data), and this gets encapsulated as a WAP request, which gets sent to one of my server(s)
3. When all packets are recieved by my server(s), they will decode the request, and send the data back, encapsulated as a WAP page. if more than 1 request is needed then this will be done so (If there is a limit on the size of data that can be send as 1 page)
4. Data is recieved on the laptop and decoded from wap page(s) and re-complied as HTML pages
Pictures may be a little more trickey, as i am unfamilier with the WAP picture standards (but both are binary, so it should still be able to work, even if the pictures have to be split up)
Rite, now what i need to kno is, how can i get my laptop to send and recieve WAP requests. and can anybody see any problems with this idea?

I have O2 pay and go P800 handset and i have always been able to access the entire internet through my GPRS connection on my phone on my laptop through IR connection. Dont ask me how, it worked ever since i bought it second hand.

I know you said don't ask, but any settings would be nice. They started charging of for gsm and my Gprs is locked in o2.co.uk

I've got same thing here with SFR france. I have free & unlimited Wap access through GPRS only on my phone. And i have to pay 6 for 10Mo full web access (pda/pc). I wonder how they manage the limitation ?Could we have full web with using other gateway?
Posted by HellFire
I think the service has gone wrong because on o2's site it should cost but it dont i can download 50mb and it dont cost a thing
Posted by BOSSHOGG
How about posting your o2 Gprs settings then? So we can try them.

Okay, here's the situation. You can connect to O2 online via GSM dialup or GRPS. GSM allows you access to the full internet (so you can check email etc), and GPRS only allows you access to WAP sites, I presume by only allowing access to port 80, and restricting DNS, and other little tricks. The upshot being that by using a GSM dialup connection you can access a broader range of services at a cost, or by using GRPS you can access O2 online for free.
O2 Online have (up until very recently) not been billing anything for GPRS access, and I presume it's because they lacked the ability to bill to pay and go customers but still needed to provide GPRS so that MMS would work. They just didn't tell anyone that you were allowed to access WAP via GPRS.
Unfortunately this all stopped fairly recently, and they have instigated proper billing on GPRS connections. Bastards.
I had hoped that because of this they would expand what you can do with a GPRS connection, and allow access to the full internet (you're paying for it, afterall). Alas, it appears that isn't the case.
So, for now, us poor bastards on O2 Online Payandgo will not be able to browse from our laptops via GPRS, and will just have to contend with sending loads of free text messages and browsing WAP pages over GSM without paying a penny. Oh yeah, and calling all our other friends on O2, chatting away for ages since it costs practically nothing.
Oh, it's a hard life
