Vodafone UK tell me pop email doesn't work on T610 and I should get another handset!

Yep the the official line I was given by Vodafone UK 'technical' support today.

I rang them for help in setting up my new T610 to pick up pop email via GPRS - at the moment all I get is 'finding server' message which eventually times out. I'm no novice so i am 100% sure all my email setting are correct, so I would guess that the problem lies in the 'data account' I'm using which is the one that comes on the phone direct from Vodafone (called vodafine gprs, username 'wap' etc)

I called the help line to ask for help and they just told me that it is a known issue with the handset (Apparantly the guy i talked to had the same handset and problem) for which they had no timescales for resolution. The best he could suggest was getting a handset from a different manufacturer!!

Before I take the phone back I thought I would check here first.

I've tried the SonyEricson configurator but no joy, the GPRS settings it sticks on my phone even fails to connect to the service let alone the mail server.

Any help would be great as I really like the phone and would like to keep it.

regards
Chris

Dunno he this'll work on vodafone. Go to the O2 web or wap site and sign up for the O2 email, log in and send and open an email whilst still online, them set up your pop email on your phone with that email address in mailbox and use 193.113.160.13 as your incoming and outgoing server. He that don't work, can't help.

the t610 definitely supports POP (and IMAP too) mail. But if your operator disables the ports that those services use, then you're out of luck.

Have you tried these threads?

@netsmithuk

You need a different data account - one where the APN is 'internet' and the username/password both 'web'.

Also, your POP DNS entry will probably work fine, but to send emails, you will need your SMTP as 'smtp.vizzavi.net'

If you go to the Sony Ericsson web page all you have to do is select your country, your phone no. and your ISP and presto! your settings arrive by SMS.

Check 'http://www.sonyericsson.com/spg.jsp?template=SP1_3&B=ie&noredir=1&LM=SB_V&noredir=1' for the UK

good luck

Don't entirely agree with you as to the efficacy of the configurator...

For example, on T68i+Vodafone+BTOpenworld, I could only ever configure dial-up access, not GPRS, and it never actually configured the SMTP server correctly, so I couldn't actually send mails! It was only by going through these forums that I got the answers...

However, the Configurator did 95% of the configuration for me...

Wow, thanks for all the fast feedback.

I tried to explain to the guy at vodaphone that i thought it was an issue with the GPRS setting but he was having none of it and flatly blamed teh handset.

Even if it does work vodafone support sucks big time so the phone is going back now. It was really irratated me too that the OS on the system was covered with links to vodafone live! with no way to remove them (safely)

This lunch I had an interesting coversation with a guy in a 'multibrand' phone shop that said if I sent it back to vodafone, they would sell me the same phone on the same network for the same price without any of the vodafone branding on either the phone or OS. On top of that he said if he could configure the pop3 email on the phone I could have it for free. (I took this as meaning he was pretty sure he could do it)

thanks for the help

Chris

netsmithuk, go change it for the unbranded one if you like. by all accounts its a better deal (certainly mine is unbranded).

however keep in mind that the earlier reply from __spc__ regarding setting up a new data account with APN is definitly what you need if you haven't got that. You wont be able to do email using the email client with a wap data account and certainly the symptoms you mentioned at the start are exactly what I got when I first started using GPRS and tried to do email via wap.

Just out of interest I've tried to get it going on this hand set.

I edited the 'vodafone gprs' data account from

APN:wap.vodafone.co.uk
USer:wap
password: wap

to

APN: Internet
user: web
paswword: web

and left all the other setting the same, when I try this I get a new error...

"GPRS parameters not support" then "cannot connect to server"

any ideas>

Posted by masseur
not too sure, but my data account only has APN of internet... no username no password etc so rather than trying to modify that one just create a new data account with just the APN.

This is exactly the problem I encountered using my T68i configuration with my T39m:

GOT THE ANSWER!!!

Apparently, on Vodafone, GPRS IP access is only available to tariffs of Vodafone 200 or greater!!

My T68i is on Voda200, the T39 is on Voda20, hence one working, the other resulting in 'GPRS parameters not supported'!

I shall sleep easier at night now with this problem resolved!!!!

Sorry don't think thats quite the full answer...

Before getting my T610, I had a jornada 928 on vodaphone, I was on their anytime 30 mins plan (£15.00 a month) and gprs5 and it all worked fine with no problems.

I am now on the same tariff but dropped down to GPRS1, which I am beginning to think might be the problem.

Ex Vodafone Tech Support here (made redundant, glad to see my ex-colleagues are missing me, assholes!) You are correct, to access POP3 or IMAP e-mail you need to use the 'internet' APN. You also need to make sure Vodafone have enabled your account to access the internet APN, some accounts may be enabled for the WAP APN only. This is why you are getting the GPRS parameters unsupported message, get Vodafone to check your account is enabled for the internet APN, then you can create a new data account on the phone with the internet APN settings and edit your email account settings to use that data account. You can leave the WAP accounts as they are so you can still use WAP if you want, if you edit the WAP account settings for the internet APN then you will have problems using WAP on some sites. Don't forget to use smtp.vizzavi.co.uk as the outgoing mail server, otherwise you may not be able to send mail.

Hope this helps,

Cheers,

Mo.

Whoever told you that pop3 wont work on t610 is talking rubbish. I have mine set up for yahoo and vodafone email accounts and it works fine. I work for vodafone, and am not surprised by the technical departments lack of knowledge - i have to deal with those idiots every day!

Posted by netsmithuk
Wow Mo... and they sacked you? The one bloke that knows what he is talking about!

Mo is absolutely right.

Its nothing to do with what tariff you are on
Its nothing to do with your phone settings
Its nothing to do with which flavour of GPRS you have set up.

All you need to do is TELL Vodafone to turn on your Internet APN. This is an account setting that appears to be off by default on some of thier tariffs. Connect is then done via Vodafones default data account
Vodafone GPRS (even though all the setting in this refer to WAP - this is how it should be)

I had to be quite forceful with them, like I said initially I was told it was a fault with the handset and I should change it to another manufacturer. Then the first time I tried to get them to turn on the Internet APN they sent me all sorts of settings and got my to take my sim card out and jump through various hoops still no good. So I called back and in the end got a woman that looked at my account and said "You just need the Internet APN access setting up on you account - I'll do it now" She told me to wait 2 hrs then try again - I waited 1hr and it all worked great.

thanks again for all the help. I looked all over the web an couldn't find any before this.

You say it has nothing to do with the phone settings so I ask you to go back to your original wap settings and try to send mail. You will find that yes, you had to activate GPRS but also you must have the correct settings for internet access rather than wap access, i.e. APN = internet.

Still... glad to hear its all working now!

Posted by netsmithuk
My settings are now back to that which came on the phone

APN:wap.vodafone.co.uk
username:wap
password:wap

Previous I had gprs services set up on the phone but it wasn't enough, there was also a setting on the account they needed to turn on too.

Chris

Glad to hear you got it working netsmithuk. Masseur is right though, you need to connect through a data account set up to connect to the internet APN for it to work. If you try to connect to the mail servers through the WAP APN it will fail. Check that you haven't edited your WAP data account to connect to the internet APN instead. If you have, set it back to connect to the WAP APN, 'wap.vodafone.co.uk', user name 'user@vodafone.net', password 'user', and then create a new data account to connect to the internet APN, 'internet', user name 'web', password 'web'. Then edit your email account and set it to use the new data account when it needs to connect. If you don't use WAP then you don't need to worry about making these changes.

Again, hope this helps,

Cheers,

Mo.

P.S. I wasn't sacked made redundant, I worked in a regional office and they could no longer afford me! Gotta pay for Chris Gent's multi million pound golden handshake somehow!

@netsmithuk,

Tried PM'ing you - system flopped; so here's my two-penneth!

Prior to this thread, I've seen it posted a dozen times or more that wap GPRS needs a wap APN - on Voda, that being wap.vodfone.co.uk/wap/wap.

Likewise that POP/IMAP email needs a data APN - on Voda, that being internet/web/web.

My Vodafone200 package through Carphone Warehouse is the lowest tariff that CPW will do on Vodafone with the 'internet'/IP APN activated: hence my Voda200 T68i works, and the Voda20 T39 doesn't - if I could be ars*d, I'd swap SIM cards around to confirm, but I'm happy with this explanation.

I also read in a GoogleGroup regarding an Ericsson phone/GPRS/PDA configuration that the PDA can use the GPRS of the phone connection to access the POP/IMAP data with a 'wap' APN - in this instance the PDA is 'doing the work', not the phone's email client. Or something like that...

The CPW Voda-support guy said that they wouldn't activate the 'IP' unless I upped my tariff...

Steven.

Here are the settings for my GPRS Internet account... (I'm in Turkey using Turkcell...)

APN = internet
User id = (empty)
Password = (empty)
Password Request = Off
Allow calls = Automatic
IP Address = (empty)
DNS Adress = (empty)
Advanced Settings:
Authentication = Normal
Data Compression = Off
Header Compr. = Off
Quality of Service = All of them are "Subscribed" except Reliabilty, which is Class 3...

Add a new data account using these settings and then create a new wap profile which is using this data account and the same IP address of your normal wap profile...

Posted by netsmithuk
I take it all back and apologies to those i 'corrected' It was strange though as it did appear to work, with no error messages (it was only later that I realised there was no emails sent or recieved either!)

Basically the procedure voda took me through was this.
- they turned Internet APN on my account at thier end and got me to power cycle my phone with the sim out. Then put the sim back in.

- then set up a new data account.
APN: internet
username:web
password:web

set up the email account to use this data account. Set outbound mail to be send.vodafone.net

Thats it, from then on it all seems to be working, touch wood.

Regards
Chris

Good news - glad to hear you've got it all up and running!

Just found this forum and sorted my GPRS email problem using the APN Internet web/web setup. QWorks great thanks guys better than Vodafone support anyday lol.

Thanks

Posted by netsmithuk
I agree this is a great forum and helped me out a lot.

Now if only I could work out how to remove all this vodafone live! junk from the phone, I'd be happy. I've got the option of sending the phone back to voda and then getting another, non branded one via a local phone shop, but its a lot of hassle I can do without.

I'm not talking about unlocking the phone or sim, or switching to another network - all I want to be able to do at a minimum is over the TWO prime buttons (one on the front and one of the site) that Vodafone Live takes up on my phone - I don't want to use the service and it seems just mad that I can't change them to be more useful shortcuts.

yeah know what u mean I do miss the the hotkey from my T68i where i could send\receive access wap etc its a pity they C key can not me mapped to do additional things other than silent and the keylock.

I have the reverse problem with my T610. I have managed to get my email(client) to work using pop3 over a GPRS connection. I can successfully receive/send mail. I'm on the vodafone GPRS starter pack.

The problem I have is that I can't connect to wap(internet??) using a GPRS connection. I get the dreaded 'GPRS paramters not supported'.

So I have 2 data accounts :

1) internet gprs - used for email (works).
APN : internet
user : web
pw: web

2) vodafone GPRS - used for wap ( doesn't work).
APN : wap.vodafone.co.uk
user : user@vodafone.net
pw : user

I've tried vodafone customer service/support on several occasions each time being given different information and not getting anywhere.

Can anyone help ?

I have set up an email account with vodafone through thier website and the settings are there to enter into the phone. It works fine, i am on vodafone too.
Hope this helps.
P.S. where can i get free full version games for it pls.

Posted by Snowdon User
That is complete rubbish, i spoke to vodafone uk today and they did not even know the t610 had an email client on board. After an hour an half on the phone i convinced them that it did. Anyway, use the sony ericsson configurator on thier site to set it up its a piece of cake, you will get two messages, install em and its done, Bingo !!!!

Posted by __spc__
@kakamega

For the wap profile, user & password = user

Cheers,

Steven.

Posted by netsmithuk
On my T610, the username and password are set to WAP. Seems to work OK.

anyone got anywhere with removing all the vodafone live! branding? Or at least assigning your own shortcuts to the buttons on the front and side?

cheers
Chris

I take it back, now i've checked...:

WAP data account -
user name: user@vodafone.net
password: user
address: wap.vodafone.co.uk

INTERNET (email) data account -
user name: web
password: web
address: internet

Posted by masseur
actually for the internet one you don't need username and password at all. just APN set to internet will get you going.

Posted by dave1000
Refering to earlier posts. You do not have to use the Vodafone SMTP server. The one that you use with your email account should work. There may be some issues with authentication. The T68i appears to support authentication (mine works with my www.fastmail.fm account).

I was on Vodafone 20 and the internet and wap APN's were enabled by default. I am now on Vodafone Anytime 30 and all is still well.

Posted by kakamega
@spc

I've tried those WAP data a/c settings and I still get 'GPRS parameters not supported'.

Any more ideas ?????? Anyone ???

Posted by __spc__
PM'd you in case you're not watching.

Basically, I reckon you'vre set the data APN account for your POP3 email okay, but HAVE ALSO set that account for your wap browsing profile too - check whether this is so!

This is particularly easy to screw up on the P800 (different I know, I know) as it has a 'preferred' data account!

Steven.

Posted by kakamega

Checked it. APN a/c used for wap browsing is wap.vodafone.co.uk
user - user@vodafone.net pw - user.

I had a problem setting up my account so i emailed vodafone and this is what they repied i followed it step by step and it worked fine. All you need to do is change the incoming and outgoing server.

First you need to create a Data Account.

Go to Main menu
Highlight & Select Connectivity.
Highlight & Select Data Comms.
Highlight & Select Data Accounts
Highlight New Account & press Add
Highlight & Select GPRS data
Name account e.g Email or Internet
Now it should say APN - edit this & enter internet
User ID (edit) - enter web
Password (edit) - enter web
Save

Now go back to the Main Menu.
We now create the mail account.

Highlight & Select Messaging
Highlight & Select Email
Highlight & Select Options
Highlight & Select Edit account
Highlight New account & press Add
Enter an account name e.g My email.
Highlight & Select Connect Using & then highlight & select the data account created previously. Highlight & Select Protocol - select POP3 Highlight & Select Incoming Server & enter pop.vodafone.net Incoming port should already be set to 110. Highlight & Select Mailbox - your login username should be entered here. Highlight & Select Password - your login password should be entered here. Highlight & Select Outgoing server & enter send.vodafone.net Outgoing port should already be set to 25. Highlight & Select Email address & enter your full email address. Highlight & Select Download & select Headers & text or headers only (personal preference) Highlight & Select From name & enter what you would like mail recipients to see. The next 2 fields are customers personal preference (we don't need to worry about these) Highlight & Select Check interval & select off. Now press Save (top right button) This will take you back to the Edit account screen - press the arrow button. Highlight & Select Set account & select the account that has just been created. Press the arrow button & scroll up to send and receive

I hope this finally solves your problem.

I have only had my sim free T610 a few days and I am retrieving my emails fine through pop3 for my o2 account. I am however having some difficulty sending any replies. It connects to server and reads "sending mail" then send failed. Think the problems are the fault of the networks.

@Bitch (!!)

Go visit this!

EDIT: ...and specifically this!
