As most are aware, NowMMS is soon to be taken offline.
The search is on for a free alternative to this service. What we need is an MMSC, or MMS server, that handles our MMS messages for free, so that instead of the charge per MMS, we just get charged for MMS transfer, or not at all.
If you have found any alternatives to this service, please list them here. May I also request that unless you have useful information do not post in this thread - let's try and keep it neat and tidy. No posts of "Yeah, anyone know any?" or "I want to know this too!".
Cheers, jaydee.

I have searched thoroughly already, but cannot come up with a free worldwide mms service.
Maybe instead we should try and figure out if it's possible to BUILD and maintain one??? Anybody who has an idea if it can be done, please post

I am working on a simple MMS system at the moment.
Currently you can :-
1) Send a message to an email address - recipient receives an email with attachments.
2) Save a picture to an "album" - viewable over the web.
3) Send a message to a mobile phone. Recipient recives a WAP link to the message - only pics work at the moment. (needs a subscription to a specific sms service for this to work)
ANy interest?

OOOOOOOOO YESSSSSS!!!!!!
Posted by wozza
the hard part of settings on up would be getting a mobile phone connected to it to send the WAP push msgs.
Posted by mwright
I just have to fix a problem with the signup process and then I can let a few people test it.
Note that I does NOT send mms messages to mobile phones in the *normal* way - it sends a wap link as a test message

I'm interested too, but is it possible to send MMS directly via a web browser? like a few pages i found on the net that lets you send free SMS
Posted by mwright
I have done some more work and research on this and there are a couple of major problems.
I will write it up and post it somewhere because it is really too long a description to post here.
Summary:
I CAN send MMS from my system to phones, emails. BUT the system is a closed group. The service providers don't like it so thay have blocked it so that I cannot send an MMS to someone with an unmodified (eg) Orange phone.
I can also save the images on a Video Blog type system. I can also send the text portion as an SMS.
I could, quite easily, provide a way to send MMS from a web page - but it would be the same CLosed Group as above.
Does that help? I will try to put up a much longer discussion later today.

I was involved in nowmms & have been plannin 2 release another free service that supports sms too, my only problem has been raising funds for a server. The software & Licensing is in place, I even have an agreement with O2, Voda & Orange about them allowin long sms support & allowin their users to use it. T-mobile talks have never been completed as they would rather customers use their T-email services.

I cannot beleive that any of the service providers would allow their users to send/receive messages via another server since this deprives them of the ability to charge and hence revenue.
If you take Orange as the example that I have most experience with, they only permit access to their MMS server through the orangemms APN. They also block access to ANYTHING EXCEPT the MMS server through the orangemms APN.
This means that they can force their customers that want to send/receive MMS to use their server and hence they can charge.
Please feel free to correct me if I am wrong!

Correct under normal circumstances, however a license allows use. you would have to use a GPRS Wap apn not mms specific APN. U r right about them blocking alternative URL's on their mms apn. An MMS server is just a http address so any can be used with the right set up. When new term starts I will post all details on a site.

I can't believe it! This thread tat I started so long ago has become active again!
Ah, now I can think back to the happy times when
a) I could exchange free MMS with my girlfriend
and
b) I had a girlfriend.
Hey ho. Great to hear about the progess though titus, I for one would be happy to make a donation, as long as you are legit of course.
Good luck!

Wouldnt take any1s money, have 2 do this without donations, then I wont be bound 2 any1...

If anyone wants to try out my system they are very welcome.
The only thing is that you have to change your MMS settings in order to be able to use it.
Once you have changed them, you will not be able to send or receive any MMS messages using your own service providers facilities.
If you want to give it a go - head on over to http://peffis.simply-sms.com and take a look.
Once you are setup then you can just send messages using the settings you will receive in an email when you sign up.
There are various ways in which it works.
1) If you send an mms to an email address - the message will be sent as an email with attachments.
2) If you send an mms to "4444" - it will be saved and displayed in the web based gallery.
3) If you send an mms to a phone number that starts with a "+" sign, AND you have an account on www.vgsmail.com then the message will be sent to that phone number as a regular MMS - but they (probably) will not be able to receive it unless they are also signed up for this service!
3) If you send an mms that ccontains ONLY a text portion, AND you send it to a phone number starting with "+", AND you have a vgsmail account, the message will be sent as an SMS using your vgsmail account.
Did that make sense?

Are y'all sayin y'all have to pay for every single sms or mms and your provider doesn't offer any packages like 300 text messages for 2.99. That would totally suck. I use it too much to pay for each separate. And i get to see them right away and don't have go to an address to see it. Too bad.
Posted by mwright
@purplerhino
I don't think anyone is saying they cannot get bundles of messages - pretty much all operators offer that I think.
What is the comment about "And i get to see them right away and don't have go to an address to see it" referring to?
@titus
So - when does the term start so we can see some details of your "licensing"
