Handspring Visor and T39 Gprs Problem

I have GPRS connection working via my laptop, no problems, but am getting nowhere setting up to use my Handspring Visor Deluxe.

This all worked fine with a GSM connection on my old Nokia 7110, using the IRLink software on the Visor.

All I'm getting now is "modem not found" error, even though IRLink is able to correctly discover the IR device as a T39 modem.

Has anyone out there got this combination to work, and can point me in the right direction ?

Even if your visor finds the modem of your T39. Still you have to install the modem of your T39 onto your visor. Hope it helps.

Unfortunately, I've only been able to find drivers for Windows CE or Windows - none for the PalmOS which the Visor runs. Do such drivers exist ?

This is the official driver from palmOS for the Ericsson T39m.

Thanks for that - but it doesn't seem to have helped... I suspect that the Handspring has a non-standard implementation of IR... 'cos I needed a third party tool (IRLink) to make it work with the old Nokia I had before.

Hmm ... which old nokia model are you referring to?

I had a nokia 6150 before and it was not compliant to IrDA specs. And that was the problem, not with the device.

or how about posting message errors here?

By the way, can you browse the web from your phone via GPRS? (Just checking if GPRS is working properly)

It was a Nokia 7110 - and in answer to your other question, I can use GPRS on the phone directly, and from my laptop, just isn't working from the Handspring Visor.

The messages I get on the Visor are as follows...

When I do "Device Discovery" in IRLink, I get "Type PnP Modem, Cat: IrCOMM IrOBEX, Name: T39" - but when I try to connect, to either GPRS or a GSM data number, I get "Error: Modem Not Found (0x1106)"

I beleive that IRLink is issuing this error, as the version of PalmOS on the Handspring Visor Deluxe doesn't directly support data communication over IR - and I needed to apply parts of a patch from 3COM to allow serial over IR to work.

If you need any more information, please let me know, or if anyone has managed to make this combination work please tell me how.

1. Check that you can dial your ISP via your mobile network. (It seems that I can't with my BT account)

2. Install just two files (Seriallrpnl.prc & SerlcommLib.prc) from the IR enhancement package by Palm. I tried with IRlink1.5 and it would not complete a connection.

3. Set the modem settings to;
Modem: custom
speed: 57,600
Flow Ctl: auto
country: other
string: AT&FX4

4. Set network to your settings with the dialup number as '00'

5. leave network details as default. 'ppp' 'power off' 'query dns = ticked' 'ip address ticked for automatic'

6. set script as
'ATDT' followed by your isp number.
Send CR:
Delay: 10
End:

7. Go to the prefs and select 'serial/ir' then serial via infra red.

8. Now line up your IR windows and make sure the t39s ir is switched on. Go to the visors prefs/network and click on connect.

Hopefully that should work for you.

This loop is caused by the installation of incompatible system
extensions from the update. To break out of the loop, perform a system reset by
following these steps:

1. Unscrew the pointed end of your Visor stylus to reveal the Reset Pin,
or unfold a standard paper clip.

2. Hold down the top scroll button on the Visor's front panel.

3. Use the Reset Pin or paper clip to depress the reset button on the
Visor.

4. When the Preferences dialog box appears, release the top scroll
button.

The Visor should now function without any system extensions. Remove the
incompatible extensions installed by the Enhanced Infrared Update to
prevent the loop error from recurring. The Visor only needs the
SerIrCommLib.prc file and not the additional AMX.prc, IrLib.prc, and
SerialIrPanel.prc files, as Palm suggests. To remove the unnecessary
extensions, follow these steps:

1. Tap the Applications button.

2. Tap the Menu button.

3. Select Delete from the App menu.

4. Select the appropriate files from the menu, tap the Delete button,
and tap Yes.

Power down, and then power up the Visor to ensure that the solution is
successful. If you still have a recurring system loop error or have lost
key IR functionality, contact Handspring Customer Support for assistance.
