Phone call when using GPRS

Hi!

I've found out that when you are downloading something with GPRS people can't call you. I thought that it should be possible to call someone who are using GPRS.

It works when you are just connected to GPRS, but if you are actually downloading something it doesn't work.

I have a T68, but it's the same on my brothers R520.

Is this the way it should work or what?

Nopes you cant make or recieve a call when using GPRS service.
The Swede Operator Comviq "forces" you to have voice mail connected to your number, when you order the GPRS service for the first time. So thats call to your phone would be reconnected to your voicemail when using the GPRS function.
Hopes you understand what I mean.. got kind of strange.

Well, as a matter of fact I am using Comviq right now. And I don't have their voice mail service

Anyway it's a bit lousy that you can't call someone that uses GPRS

Are sure? They dont charge you for it, or tell you that you have it, its included in the GPRS which is FREE now
I noticed it when I think it was my Mom called me and didnt get thru, and some days later she asked me why I didnt answered her call when she left a mess. to me.
So try call you phone when its "busy" or turned off.

Really?
Thats strange Ive never tried to make a call by myself, when on GPRS, but I know that for sure that its connected to my voicemail when someone tries to call me

Well it all depends on the provider!!!
Here in lebanon we got 2 providers... am with Libancell where i can receive and make calls when using GPRS, or even ask to have the GPRS service on a seperate SIM.
The other one, Cellis didn't enable any of those features!! But we do pay more...
Libancell : 35$/month
Cellis : 22$/month!!

On an active GPRS session, I can make a call. However, if someone calls, they get a busy signal (I disabled my voicemail). But with SMS, I can make and receive SMS.

Hm.. Strange, because i still can get incoming call when browse WAP or place my phone as gprs modem with my pc, but yes download is interupted when i pick the call.

Well, I've tried Europolitan and Telia here in Sweden with a Ericsson R520 and a T68 R2B and both can accept incoming calls while I'm WAP browsing.

I'm on Norwegian Netcom and I'm constantly interupted by imcomming calls when GPRS-surfing, so mine works as it should! When the call is terminated I get a continue-option on the display, pess Yes and keep on from where I was when I was interrupted! KS :-o

I guess it is Comviq that sucks then cause, I can't recieve any calls when I am actually using GPRS. I can recieve a call when I am reading a wap page but when it is actually downloading the pages the the calls are not getting through.

I guess I have to ask Comviq if they can fix it.

incoming sms/calls work just fine here when using gprs (orange dk)

So it means that I'm still kinda lucky with my SP.

During a GPRS session, i can send and receive SMS, and i can still receive calls. I haven't tried making calls coz i only use IR (probably when i get a bluetooth adapter)

Just sharing the info.

I just tried what happens. Disconnected my laptop from LAN and connected T39 via DRS-11 to the serial port. Established GPRS connection, and refreshed this page (and others), called the mobile and called from the mobile. In both cases the connections were interrupted, but resumed after the end of the call. So I guess I am happy with my GPRS provider, too: The network is called "ONE", and the carrier company "Connect Austria".

i get the calls when using gprs, has been working both on my t68 and the crappy piece of shit 8310 which i had before. using comviq gsm, sweden...

i am not able to receive calls when, for example, retrieving e-mail from my yahoo account.

but while surfing the mobile i-net, i can receive calls...

is that weird?
or just fine..?

Let me try to put some order in this topic before we all jump and say "I can receive" or "I cannot receive" because we may be in different scenarios when we made the statement.

As the original post says "he cannot receive calls when *downloading*"

Scenario:

a) You are connected to GPRS, AND
b) You are casually browsing, and the connection icon (toolbar) shows blinking lights for send/receive, OR
c) You are downloading a big file, and the connection icon (toolbar) shows consistent lights on.

Test it for yourself, if the condition is b), you can receive calls. That happens when the GPRS connection is "idle"

However, if the condition is c), you will not be able to receive a call, and will be redirected to VM if you have it activated.

To those who posted in this topic, please try the test and re-post your result. Otherwise, what you posted may not be accurate.

@ arnoldc

Thanks for clarifying. But since I seldom use GPRS for anything alse than surfing, usenetting, sending or retrieving mails – especially I do not have large downloads – the outcome that I can be reached on the phone is enough for me. (Anyhow: Since my GPRS provider is not my standard carrier, I care even less ;–)

@arnoldc

That is exactly the way it is, and that is what I think is bad. When you are actually downloading something the phone can not be reached.
