o2 and Wap Question

I have 500 free minutes/pages on Wap on O2 and my nokia 3650 seems to have two wap settings - "wap via gsm" and "wap via gprs". I was wondering which was the one that allowed me the free minutes. Also, why do they say minutesSLASHpages - which one is it?

The free minutes are usually with wap via gsm. Im not sure about the 500min/pages but i assume it means whichever comes first.

Depends what system you're on.

If you're on Prepay/PAYG, WAP500 applies to GSM wap. After your 500 minutes you are charged at 10ppm.
GPRS WAP is totally free as we have not worked out how to charge for it.

If you're on contract, then it will probably be GSM wap as well, but you would be best to make sure.

Yeah Jalu, i was wondering if its possible to port my current number (t-mobile PAYG) to o2 PAYG (that 300 free text & wap one)? Will i then also be able to use Free GPRS on my P800 and keep my number as 079....?
Can i do this at any o2 store or does it have to been done over the phone? Also, whats the current price i will have to pay for the sim/cross over?

Okay...

(1) You can port your number from T-Mobile to O2UK but it is worth noting that if anyone on O2 calls you, they will still be charged as if you're on T-Mobile.

(2) As far as I know (I may be wrong) the Free GPRS "offer" does not apply on O2 Online (300 free text/wap deal) but you can get free GSM wap on that anyway.

(3) To port over you need to speak to T-Mobile and get a PAC code which is T-Mobile saying it's okay for you to leave them. The code is three letters followed by six numbers and if my memory serves me right it will probably be ONE.

(4) You also will need an o2 sim - if you want a 300 sms/wap sim that is O2 Online and you need to order that through the website. If you want a normal O2UK sim you can get one from any shop but they are usually around £20. You can get one directly from o2 (08705 214000) for £10.

So.... its ok about ppl on o2 calling being charged t-mobile prices, so does that mean people ringing using t-mobile will be charged as if i was on t-mobile? That would be perfect

And about the sim, if i buy a new sim, wouldnt that have its own number (07.....?), what should i do:
Ring t-mobile get PAC yeah,
then buy normal sim or ring o2 to fix it up?
Can i have a o2 sim, and then ring o2 to make that sim have my number, or do i keep my same sim from before (the t-mobile sim)? Thanks for the help and congrats on the 500 posts

@geo you sure about the free gprs on that tariff yeah mate?

@Jalu

I am on a contract - the o2Online 500mins one. How do I check that it is gsm wap. I tried to email them using the email field online but the damn thing wouldnt work (unexpected error etc etc!).

Also, do you know what it means when it says minutesSLASHpages?

One last thing - my friend transported her number FROM o2 to orange ages ago: does this mean I can still use my o2-o2 minutes to phone her?

(1) The best way to check you are using GSM wap is to send yourself the GSM wap settings from the site.

(2) Minutes/pages probably means you get 500 GSM minutes or 500 GPRS pages (as GPRS is charged by the page, not by the minute). Best to try and check anyway.

(3) You can't use o2-o2 minutes to call someone who's moved to Orange, it's a one off thing for people coming in I'm afraid.

I didn't think GPRS was free but if it says "minutes/pages" then Minutes refers to WAP GSM which goes through analouge like a normal call. Pages would refer to WAP GPRS which is v.fast and this is not billed by minutes, but by amount of data. And by pages I think they will allow you the "average" amount of data it requires for 500 pages.

Jalu, when o2 strat charging for GPRS any idea if o2 online customers will ghet good bundles? I heard rumours of £10 for unlimited GPRS WAP?

And how long is the free gprs gonna last?

Posted by jalu
With the launch of o2 active, I heard that the free GPRS thing on Prepay is going to end in AUGUST. At that point some data tariffs will probably come out but at the moment I haven't heard anything.

Keep watching!

August eh?

Well gives me a few months, I have downloaded in 1 month a cool 62mb over GPRS free with pay/go online sim, on my Nokia 7650 using webviewer.
It was going to be 2p a kb, if that remains then 1 months surfing will cost me.......................................................................................................1250 pounds, hmmmmm, that's nice

That isn't going to work is it?

BT tried to resist change like this as well, charging by the minute for Internet calls, they finally caved in and offered unlimited(within reason) packages, the mobile companies will have to follow suit, but can the mobile network handle it?
I've heard the GSM network is allready way over it's design limits for connected phones, that's why you have zero chance of making a call or text on new years eve, if eevryone starts surfing on colour screen phones, they'll have to dust off the 3g licenses.
