okay... here we go. Firstly let's start off by saying that quite a lot of SIM cards have not been provisioned on the systems for use with GPRS. All you should need to do is call up and ask for GPRS to be provisioned.
I know that most of the call centre staff are useless but I'm not
If you have a GPRS enabled handset then you need it provisioned on the SIM... THEN you need the settings aswell. If you want to send MMS you need that provisioning on the SIM also.
If you are having problems with sending SMS then you need to call up o2 and ask them to call DATA SUPPORT/SERVICES and have your number added to a system called "nap"... after half n hour a power cycle of your phone should remedy the problem solved.
Currently GPRS is NOT charged on prepay [payasyougo] on o2 and when charging DOES come into place it will be charged at 2 pence for the first downloaded page and then 1pence per page after that.
If you have a SHARP GX-1 you are screwed... only kidding
Any more information just post here asking for anything... happy to help.
Posted by jalu
It's also funny to note that o2 have dropped the GX-1 too, no longer is it our flagship mms phone
I never liked it anyway - I got to play with one while helping a member out and it stank teh biggun.

Please can someone explain to me do i need gprs to send mms or should i be able to do this olso from a dialup? ??
Posted by maddav
I phoned up just now and i was told that they would enable my phone for both MMS and GPRS and it worked, although i'm getting a user barred message when trying to send MMS. :-(
Posted by breakerfall
user barred is because your number isn't on the nap system... This is because the nap contains a list of all the SIMs which were sent out as pre-provisioned for use on MMS.
Call up o2 and ask them to call DATA support and add the number to the system called nap
Good luck

Mmm, make advisors feel dumb and spout insider system knowledge...
Well gee, that'll get you good service...
Jalu - advisor who's always very doubtful about insider knowledge
Posted by breakerfall
ha ha ha
how d'you mean?
Posted by jalu
We had a repeat caller recently who had warnings sent out about him through the entire company. Legend has it that he was a friend/brother of someone who worked at o2.
I had him on the line once, spouting insider knowledge "Check
I would advise him of a few things and get told I was wrong and to check somewhere else.
I like to think of myself as a damn good advisor and I will try my best to help anyone (just ask ardman_ryan
Also people who come on with an attitude need to be shot. I'm not paid enough to take your s**t.
If you want help, phone up and be nice. Yelling does no good, neither does telling advisors what to do using insider knowledge.

i know that one... people think they know more... but for serious.. out of the entire place there are very few people I would trust to help me out if I was the customer. Some peopel are so lazy.
For example I'd get a call on the lucent, or an email... customer wanted this checking out and had your lucent! call them back... rather than the git just doing his job which is a piece of piss anyway.
There's only so much I'll help people with... and if they show attitude they will get a lot less
Posted by jalu
Alright, so you don't like people giving you attitude -
Why advise people here to give advisors attitude?
Jalu
PS. Sorry for the response but you hit a nerve.
Posted by breakerfall
sorry mate... wasn't supposed to.... was more aimed at some of the dipshits who work there.... I know there are people who are good at the job and I also know a lot of people who are naff or just can't be bothered. Didn't wanna cause offence... I'll edit the post shall I? I know quite a lot of people wouldn't know about calling 111 and asking for the nap system... that's all.

l have to say that o2 have possibly the worst attitude to customer service. my company simply could not survive with the same outlook. No one at o2 seems to own a customer issue, I got called 'some bloke' the other day when I mystery called!
Posted by jalu
By all means people, ask for the data services team - the bit that I wasn't fond of was the "make them feel dumb" - I wouldn't wish that on anybody.
Jalu
Posted by breakerfall
well that's the kind of thing I mean... of course you can't take it that everyone who works for o2 has the same attitude. As with any company there are people who are there just for some money and can't be bothered doing even their simple job right. There are people like this everywhere.

hey Jalu... I'm sorry man... that's been removed. It's gone. I didn't wanna cause offence... just that I've been in the place all day and the weather's been gorgeous.
Sorry for any offence

Big generalisation there, Peanut

Based on your advice I called o2 up to enable my pay as you go sim for GPRS, only to be told to use the GSM WAP as they did not allow GPRS on pay as you go sims??
any ideas?
Posted by jalu
Send the settings out to your own phone - the link is http://amber.smarttrust.com/O2UK/index.jsp.
Hopefully GPRS will be set up on your sim - if not you'll have to call back and *insist* that it is added.
The reason they are saying it is not supported is the fact we can't charge members yet - some advisors are taking this to mean we should lie. However, I was recently at GPRS training where they told us to say it is a promotion and let people use it as opposed to lies.

If they wont activate gprs for wap just ask them to enable it for mms. Payg users try this: ring the top up line (4444) and press 1 to top up via voucher. It will then say press 1 to continue, press 2 and you get the option to phone the customer service line, choose that and you will get connected for free. Hope everyone understands that lol.
Posted by jalu
Do exactly as he says and you get to watch in wonder as they refuse to help you and advise you to call the paid line.
Just so everyone understands

too true... bit of a bummer really... most people are catching on now. As far as GPRS provisioning goes that's bull... most new SIMs come pre-provisioned and if not should be.
Posted by maddav
Well, i phoned up a few days ago and asked if they could enable MMS on my phone, and they provisioned my SIM for both MMS and GPRS, so now i can use both, but not at once : ) Even though alot of people have given them bad reviews the person i talked to at customer service seemed fully confident of what he was doing and he helped me out brilliantly.
Posted by breakerfall
call back and ask whoever you speak to to send an email to the person you spoke with last... Everyone deserves some good feedback if they've done a good job.

so is gprs free on payg?
Posted by jalu
GPRS is free on PAYG as they haven't figured out how to charge for it yet.
@Geo2k: I really don't know what to say to that. They shouldn't help you. Maybe you're just lucky.
Jalu

okay... just to summarise:
GPRS is free at the moment.. will eventually be charged at 2pence for the first accessed page and 1 pence per page after that.
If you want GPRS you only need to call member services and ask for it to be provisioned. Once done [max timescale of 24 hours] you will need to powercycle the phone.
As jalu pointed out earlier, you can send yourself the seetings, PROVIDED that the SIM is already provisioned for GPRS at http://amber.smarttrust.com/O2UK/index.jsp
If you do call the top up line and you are helped you are lucky... advisors have now been instructed to refer customers to the chargeable line, 08705 678 678 or 4445 / keypad 9 on your handset.
Note that you will need GPRS in order to send MMS... the settings can also be sent from the link above and are basically the same as your GPRS WAP settings only there is a Relay Server.
MMS is a fairly new technology in this country so be patient... although you should now be able to send to the other main SPs including orange, voda and T-Mobile... there are still teething problems and there are some MMS probably just floating out in the air somewhere
Are there anny issues regarding the WAP/GPRS/CSD issues that are not mentioned above? Please ask if there are.

OK I have a few questions;
1. When do o2 plan on charging for GPRS access? Will this also take place with the o2 online payg tariff or will it be included in my 300 free minutes? (it better had!)
2. Is it possible to access mobile web through GPRS and my laptop? I've tried everything and got as far as my 7210 feeding me back 'temporary network problem' when it authenticated on connecting. I'm using payasyou.o2.co.uk as the gprs access point on my laptop, but have tried mobile.o2.co.uk also and it says its invalid. Any ideas? Is it possible? Thanks in advance.

(1) GPRS is going to be chargable in June or July, dependant on when the engineers fix our billing system.

Sorry to repeat but it's been mentioned ubertimes in varrry similar threads
You can't, in theory, use data transfer methods on PrePay and I don't know the ins and outs. The main problem seems to be with using different APNs but I'm not certain.

Hey Jalu... Am I right in thinking that currently there are no plans to use the GPRS on the o2online tariff?¿ Unless, as you say in PSMS... if fixed they will include "per page" provisioning such as 500 pages/month kinda thing....
it's a possibility.
Posted by jalu
I doubt there's any plans, simply because they can't charge you for iyt and the whole selling point of o2 online is *some* free minutes then chargable.
If they embraced totally free internet then that would go down the tube.
They will probably do it once GPRS is chargable.
11am is far too early to be in work on a Sunday
