256 Colour palettes for Photoshop

Click to view updated thread with images

Posted by all8
I have generated a colour table file which is to be used inconjunction with Photoshop. This file contains the exact 256 colours found in T68.
Click the link below to download (file size 0.7Kb)
http://planet.time.net.my/BukitBintang/arcki/esato/256.act

---------------
Use it to edit your picture with correct colour

I suggest you Search esato under "colour palette" for tips to create perfect pictures for T68
---------------
Load this file into Photoshop you could see the exact colour of your picture in T68 (Same effect as use the button in MYPICTURES called COLOR DITHER)

Here is what you do:
1.Open your jpeg picture file in Photoshop
2.Goto Image- Select Mode-Select Indexed Colour
3.Indexed Colour table will appear
4.Goto Palette- Select Custom-Load "256.act" file(need to remember where you downloaded the file)
5.Click OK
6.Finish

Enjoys

I'm just about to try this out but if it's what I think it is YOUR A GENIOUS!

Posted by bjambean
HAHAHA what an idiot u know I meant genius! Doh

Anyway heres a thought:
perhaps the people who run this site could some how implement this colour palette onto the T68 images when they are previewed online so we see exactly how they'll be before spending money and seeing them through wap.

Just a thought.....

Posted by laffen
..and maybe the people who upload logos to this site could save us the time and bandwith converting the logos from jpeg

Got a mail from a user a while ago. The user wanted to charge us for his WAP usage. He was not able to view the logos on his phone (on Orange) and wanted us to cover his expenses. :??: I asked him if he usually got a refound from his ISP if he not found what he was looking for on the .net.

So far, I only made family albums to transfer to my T68. They are in sharp colour and Contrast. It can be done easily but it take times perfecting it.

For the best, colour enhancement technique with Photoshop, do this
Hue/Saturation Command
In this picture, the image lacked in mostly color. To fix this, I went to
Image>Adjust>Hue/Saturation. I simply turned up the
Saturation a touch to bring back a little life. To much saturation can
ruin the image, and the more you use will increase the file size too. So
try and keep these things in mind.

Brightness/Contrast Command
Using this feature is a great way to make the dark areas dark and the light areas more lighter and brighter. Go to Image>Adjust>Brightness/Contrast. The trick
is to turn down the Brightness a touch, then up the contrast a bit

Unsharp Mask
When resizing photos down, they can look fuzzy and blurred. Using the Unsharp Mask command is a great choice for sharpening up those small thumbnails. Go to Filter>Sharpen>Unsharp Mask. The setting I have below is the absolute best for this.

Image SizeIt is now time to resize picture to suit T68 screen. Go to Image>Image Size.  Picture size should be 101x80 pixel

Indexed Color
Use this feature to convert picture to 256 colours use by T68
Go to Mode>Indexed Color.(This step is the same as doing "Dither Color" in Ericsson "MyPicture" software.)
Go toImage>Mode>Indexed Color. Change setting to

Pallette : Local (adaptive).
Colors  : 256.
Forced     :Custom > Load ColorTable .
(You may download T68 colour table from my website http://planet.time.net.my/BukitBintang/arcki/esato/256.act
- Best to download to your computer beforehand)

The above picturecontains all 256 colour used by T68.(The T68 colour table was created using the same picture)

Save As
Save picture as GIF file for Irda/Bt transfer to T68. Go to File>Save As. File format setting change to GIF, name it what ever you like.

Done. Ready to upload to your T68

It's all very well enhancing the pictures as you have shown (very much improved) but as soon as you hit Colour Dither the picture inevitably deteriorates and becomes very pixelated for want of a better word. How do you overcome this? (especially bad on backgrounds with flesh-tones).

Posted by all8
Hi badger,

If you have carry out the "Indexed Color" step correctly and save it in GIF file. The picture will not deteriorate at all if you do "Colour Dither" the on same picture with "Ericsson MyPicture" software.

Try downloading Colour table file "256.act" and load to the Photoshop "indexed Color" function, you will have the exact colour used by T68.
If done correctly, you are able to see the final colours of your picture on Photoshop as you will see in your T68.

Hi badger,

To overcome "bad on backgrounds with flesh-tones", you need to fiddle with the Hue/Saturation/ Contrast/ Brightness Command. Practice will make perfection. But don't over adjusting it.

It actually took me quite a while to get it correct. I hope this is of some helps to you

Cheers

Why not add this post to the FAQ? Or make it a permanent home here? Contains some very useful information, especially the palette.

Did anyone try this palette in Paint Shop Pro 7.x ?

I'm a little Photoshop handicaped...but working on it...

Posted by all8
This palette only work for Photoshop
(*.ACT) stands for adobe colour table

If you want to use it on Paint shop, you need to create one colour table with paint shop.

To do this, you may dowload the 256 colours picture in my previous thread, then create one. (The *.act was created using the same picture)

Thanks All8. Just found this thread and used your 'rainbow' picture to make a T68 palette in Corel PhotoPaint (Open picture, then Color Table ..., Save As ...).

Have a nice photo of the kids waiting for our T68s to arrive today!!!

Yes, you can. There are many ways you can change picture colours with photoshop
A simple guide.
Use Lasso Tool to demarcate areas you need to change .(This sector will be marked by blicking lines)
Then use Evedropper to select the black colour you want( or any colour).
Lastly, Use Paint Bucket Tool to paint over the entire blicking sector demarcated with Lasso Tool.
I hope this is of some helps to you

cheers

Hi pxus,
In order to get what you want, you need to master 3 basic functions in Photoshop, they are

" Lasso Tool", "Eyedropper tool" and "Paint Bucket Tool"

goto the respective Help Section of Photoshop as follows:

"Using the lasso, polygonal lasso, and magnetic lasso tools"
"Using the eyedropper tool" and
"Using the paint bucket tool"

Follow the step by step instruction. You 'll be OK

Hi Funky-Fish
You would not be able to use " Filter>Sharpen>Unsharp Mask " features if your picture is in "Indexed Color" Mode.
You need to change picture to RGB Color Mode to use Filter Function.
I hope this is of some help

Hi all!
These are all really great tips! Been creating a few themes with desktop and background pictures and kept wondering why the translation from pc to phone had such a great variant. Didn't know the 256 colour on the t68 was different from pc. Thanks for the very useful colour palette. Keep up the excellent work guys!

i've tried Extensis Intellihance Pro (Photoshop plugin), just to let all of you know that you are able to produce good enhanced pictures for transfer to T68.

Purchase or Down load Demo copy and install on your photoshop
http://www.extensis.com/intellihancepro/

Follow the following steps

1. Open your jpeg picture file in Photoshop
2. ENhance picture with intellihancepro( choose the correct setting to your choice)
3. Goto Image>Adjust>Hue/Saturation( Saturation setting +18)
4. Goto Image>Adjust>Brightness/Contrast (Brightness Setting -5)(Contrast setting +20)
5. Goto Image>Image Size (Picture size 101x80)
6. Goto Filter>Sharpen>Unsharp Mask (Amount 500%; Radius 0.2 Threshold 0)
7.Goto Image- Select Mode-Select Indexed Colour
8.Indexed Colour table will appear
9.Goto Palette- Select Custom-Load "256.act" file(need to remember where you downloaded the file)

Nice, this I'm going to download!
Good work!!!

Posted by thorsander
A great file!

Now I have tried it in PhotoShop 7.x and it works!
Just wanted you to know...

Posted by gomichaelkgo
I posted this in another topic, but I thought it would be good in the sticky.

The T68 uses a popup window for caller ID. Even though the display is 101 x 80 pixels, only the center portion of an image is shown. To make sure your caller id picture displays like you want it, you should make it the same size of the popup window which is 93 x 62 pixels.

Tip number two: We have (or should be using) the .act file that converts an image to an indexed color .gif file. The color table only utilizes the colors that the T68 is able to display. What i've discovered is that you should resize the image BEFORE loading the color table. I've included two examples to illustrate the point.

Loading color table last (good)

Loading color table first (bad)

The image editing steps that work best for me are:
1. Crop image area
2. Resize to either 93 x 62 for caller id or 101 x 80 for full screen
3. Adjust contrast, brightness, saturation
4. last: load color table

Hope this helps you!

2 gomichaelkgo: actually it is exactly the same order as advised by all8.
2 all8: Thank you very much. I have noticed the difference between PhotoShop's 256 c palette and T68's one. I just could not think of creating a palette myself. Great work!

Great!

One problem... how to get images under 3 k? I make some gif's, but they are too big!

It must be less than 3 k, if You want to view them with xHTML / Wap. Or was this 3 k size a network problem?

Hmm... thanks. Already read that, but now I made some test's, and...

...why do You have to save GIF? I did settings like before, and THEN save to JPG! I now have very nice images, under 3 k... work's fine!

Only thing is that I "can't use" image bigger than 101 x 80, my stupid phone shrink it to my screen size...

A good question. Why did I save all pictures in GIF file instead of JPG File. The answer is simply because early version of T68 which is T68m, Jpg file wasn't supported.
I noticed Software Version R2E006 supports JPG files.

Another point to note is that after converting picture to Indexed Colour , the same Picture can never be saved in JPG File. This is probable due to some of the colour pallettes in T68 do not match the colour palettes found in JPG file

Can someone please help me with T68 screensaver. I save the screensaver on my pc as a gif file, and then when i transfer it, on my pc it says file transfer error, and my my phone it says picture too big. i would really appreciate it if you guys help me. Thanx

Posted by Rotavap
This is GOOD news to me...
Thanks for the plug-in!

Posted by MarkOng
Lalu728--> Either your phone is out of memory, or your gif file dimensions do not match the 101x80 requirement. Even though you may have enough memory to store it, your phone still needs memory to load the screensaver when you choose to set it as one. This goes the same for themes.

Posted by lalu728
MarkOng-- is there anyway i can get more memory, by deleting some stuffs or is there anyway to check how much memory i have left.

Posted by MarkOng
I did clean up my phone by deleting all the default pics. That's free up quite a lot of memory. You can leave the ringtones alone as they don't take up that much memory. Try to reduce the number of themes stored in your phone as those take up huge memory. Same goes for some screensavers. In fact, longer screensavers take up the most space ranging from anywhere around 60kb to over 200kb. Other than that, you can't add more memory to your phone.

Posted by kamt68
do you guys send backgrounds to your t68 as gif's? when i try ( SE my pictures) it wont let me i have to send them as a jpg.

Posted by hyperken
use Send File (you can find it in esato too)

I not sure what is the problems. I can download the act file without a glitch. Perhaps it is you computer that convert act file to jpg file. If you like post me you email adrress, i can set the act file to you

all8,

Tks for the file. The same thing happened. could it be the setting of my ps?

>ctchng
I have 2 more suggestions to made:

1. Either you manually change the 256.jpg file name to 256.act file.

2. Or, you can generate your own ACT file using the gif picture below.

Right click picture/Save picture As/
Open up Picture in Photopshop--create colour table using this pictue--name it what ever you like

Try it out

I have installed intellihance pro as a photoshop plug-in. I have checked it has gone into the plug-ins folder but when I run photoshop there is no enhance button or anything to do with intellihance pro except in the help file it shows intellihance as a plugin.
Any ideas why I am not seeing the enhance button? Where should it be?
