anyone had this happen? you get an info message with "disk full" and then the device hands on the "welcome to t-mobile" splash screen...so you can never get in and delete anything or software factory reset from the control panel.

sony ericsson says i'm SOL as they don't officially support the device in the US yet.

anyone have any idea what to do? is there some keypad sequence factory reset sequence or anything?

Well i dont know bout that but the word on esato is that the device becomes wery slow if u fill it up too much and in the end becomes dangerus to hang on u ! So u need to keep just that bit of extra space on it just in case ... Regards Laz

You will need to send your phone in to someone for a firmware upgrade. The firmware upgrade will format your computer allowing it to boot up. This problem has happened to a few people already, and a firmware upgrade seems to be the only fix.

I had a similar experience 2 days ago. I installed some new programs for testing, I got disk too full messages, then I started to clean up the C: drive. When I freed about half a Meg, there was a crash for no obvious reason, and after reboot free space on drive C: was zero! My guess is that the file system became corrupted, similarly to cross-linking on a PC hard disk. From this point the machine was slower and slower, after a few reboots I could not even reach the uninstall menu, nor the master reset, and finally the machine completely stopped responding: after a reboot the only sign of life was the short vibra response, then even the screen did not light up. I was locked out totally (quite a bad feeling).

Then I tried to reboot without SIM and/or MSDuo. After several attempts with no success, suddenly a message came up that file system is corrupt and drive C: needs to be formatted. And the P800 revived itself! It was restored to a newly bought stage, I got those few initial configuration screens. Of course my data on C: were lost but who cares after such a case.

So, without fully understanding what exactly happened, I suggest

- To the guy who is locked out from his phone to keep trying reboots with various configurations (SIM, MSDuo, battery, whatever you can change), because the OS might (!) be able to restore itself. If not, then probably the only thing to do is to take it to a service point, hoping that they can stimulate a format/reset somehow. And it's only a hope probably...

- To those who are using the C: drive (i. e. everybody) to back up often, and do a master reset immediately when your machine starts slowing down due to disk full. I missed this opportunity, and finally became locked out due to the increasing slowness.

BTW I again feel that the P800 is a computer, but a badly underdocumented one...

thanks...i guess i'll keep trying this until i can get the device flashed. pretty bold of SE not to put a harware reset button on this thing. i guess that's the difference between a phone manufacturer and a PDA manufacturer. seems like it is almost too easy for a poorly written application that doesn't clean up memory or disk to crash this thing.

While trying to have your P800 restored itself, I think it's important to give it time, as it is fundamentally slow at this stage. So try not to be impatient, wait after a reboot for many minutes. Charge the battery if necessary as usual (that was not impaired in my case). Clean the battery connectors from dust - that was what I did immediately before success, although probably just a coincidence, you may also pray :-) Let us know whats going on. Have luck!

zol: Do you know of anyway to back up via BT? I'm running win98 at the moment and can't install the stupid software and so on. I can send files back and forth fine through BT, just wonder if there is a way to back it up, maybe a 3rd party app?

If BT works fine, try backing up whole directory trees manually, using copy/paste between PC File Manager (showing P800 files) and Windows Commander (showing PC files). BTW the file made by the SE backup program is just a .zip file that can be manipulated as such by giving it a .zip extension (can be useful to know).

Simple method of prevention, once you've actually got it sorted this time:

don't put anything on C:/ except for your phone book, messages and handyday. That's what i've always done, and put ALL of my programs, mp3s, games etc on my 64mb Duo - this problem is too well documented for anyone who's heard of it to risk filling up their c: drive and getting stuck - plus the phone runs much faster with a clear drive!

Quick question

All the apps that originally come with the phone (pre-installed)... are they on the C drive? If so, how do you move them to a memory card? Do I have to uninstall and reinstall from media CD?

Thanks!

I don't have too much experience with P800 so this is just a thought. On the T68 I can hold the power button for a long time (10 sec maybe) for a reset, doesn't this work on other Ericsson phones like the P800?

Posted by zol
Yes it works the same way. When the P800 crashes like a Windows system, you hold the power button for 10 seconds, giving it a soft reset. Well, people call it "soft". What is the difference between soft and hard reset on a PDA like the P800?
