Windows to mac

I am thinking of changing to the Mac operating system from Windows as I am sick and tired of the blue screen when it crashes. My Computer and laptop are only about one year for the desktop and six months for the laptop old. But as I have used windows for years I updated my hardware to brand new stuff after years of second hand stuff in the hope that this would stop my problems with the windows operating system. Unfortunatly all to often it crashes and I have been told that the Mac system is a lot more stable and more enjoyable to use. Any one out there got any views on this as your advice is most welcome.

I have used Mac now for a year. It has been great. Almost no crashes or problems. I own a iMac and Powerbook and I'm very pleased. Just ask if you have any spesific questions!

Cheers

Used both for years. There is no comparison. Mac is the way to go if you're going to invest in a computer. Be warned, using it can be addictive and may take up more of your time, not because you're trying to get it to work, but because, frankly, it's so much fun to use. Welcome to the "light" side.

Sounding good so far what is software like for them is there a lot of it and what is the performance like, I notice they only seem to have 600-800 processors is the mac software smaller in size or does it need less power to run it.

Posted by CrazyStud17
Mac has a different bus architecture compared to PCs. On a regular computer 600-800 MHz ain't fast, but for Mac it's their prime speed. Honestly, Mac is faster and produces less crashes than Windows.

Posted by volvoman
that explains it then so a Mac it is then will go out and look around at prices and see what I can do. Will have to sell my laptop and desktop and get myself a Mac.

Lol u have fallen in to th mhz hype the powerpc is a better processor than a intel 3 or 4 u need 2 look in 2 in 2 that and 4 any i say different the n look in 2 ibm' powerpc agenst intel p4. Intel is running scaired from it and a mac is a better computer go for it

Posted by decoy7
i once asked an avid MAC fan to go to a website where i would find him a PC that was more powerful than any MAC currently available...he then opened his web browser and it crashed...dont beleive all of what you read cos some people talk sh**.

MACS do look nice though.

I can't see the point in lying to a person wondering if he will convert to MAC. I would not say that it is super-stable and great if it wasn't!

Still not totally convinced it is the right thing to do but one main question which been a coach driver it is very important. Can I use a autoroute with the mac laptop and desktop as I use this for job pricing giving me millage fuel cost driving time and so on so it is very important to me that I am able to use such a program.

you are in the same boat as me, thats why i switched to macs last year, i got tired of putting up with windows and all of its problems, i couldn't nothing done... so i decided to take that chance and bought me a mac, lemme tell you this is my 1st mac ever and i can never be in love so much with a computer ever in my life, this thing is beautiful! and i can say the same goes to OS X, the most advanced, beautiful elegant OS i evered used before, windows can't even compare to it, i been a PC/windows users all my life... i can't believe i didnt switch sooner, yes definetly get a mac... you will enjoy using it, i love using my mac, i am so addicted to using this thing, the user experience on OS X is much more higher than windows...

Well.. I have one Windows XP PC, one Imac and one PC running Unix (FreeBSD) And the way i see it is:
Unix/Linux: Great for web servers, sucks as desktop OS
Mac: Way too expensive software (This depends on if you actually pay for all your apps and the OS itself)
PC/Windows: Best compromise really, fastest CPUīs available (sorry Mac-fans, PC IS faster, get over it. Both Intel and AMD are using basically the same CPU arcitecture as Motorola nowadays. The only reason some apps run smoother on Mac is that they were originally ported for Mac.
Bottom line: If you have loads of money and donīt care about new games and loads of apps, go for MAc otherwise PC/windows is the way to go..

whatever, faster wow, is that all you PC users care about, who cares if your machine is like 6GHZ, it may be fast but look at the shitty OS, windows, whats a fast computer if you cant even use it w/o crashing and having to reboot, i rather be productive any day over having just a fast machine... your machine might beat mine, but then crash during the process, while mine is stable and finishes... but lets not turn this into a pc vs mac war...

If I'm honest,

1) by comparing the pure processor power, high end PCs are a lot faster then high end macs, however if you're not doing professional video cutting or photoshop with many effects, you'll never see a difference in speed when working with applications. As the OS and most applications are better in usability, you'll do your jobs faster on a Mac.

2) Desktop Macs are very overprices, thats real. At this time (till the IBM 64bit Processors will be introduced) I would never buy a Desktop Mac. Opposite Situation on the Laptop Front: If you compare Powerbooks with equal equiped PC Notebooks, you'll see that there are a very good deal (exept the GHZ issue). The 12" Powerbook is from my point of view one of the best Laptops on the market at an competitve price. If you decide to switch then get the 12" PB.

Well, i strongly believe PC's are the way to go at the moment as you can so many more programs for them and many for free off the net. Also about you saying windows crashes all the time, what windows are you running? I run XP home and have ahd it for about a year, it's only crashed like 2 or 3 times. It runs smoothly as long as you keep it running smooth, if you make sure you're cleaning your system and getting rid off the mass amounts of spyware people have on their computers. I must admit though that macs are good to look at, especially with two of those big flatscreen monitors, but they are way too expensive....

Posted by elisaandjim
Ok we all know PC's may have very high mhz processors available, get higher and cheaper everyday.......they lose their value like crazy, and like others said, having that mhz running windows is not that great due to the crappy OS, but having even less mhz on a mac running os X is going to be smoother and more reliable. I just got my 12'' ibook and couldnt be happier. I have been using windows for around 8yrs and wish i would have switched sooner. Seriously though, i have the 640mb of memory and the 800mhz, and its faster than my friends 2.4ghz PC with 512mb memory, and just d/l all your software with aquistion for mac! Everyone thinks mac sucks, even i did, UNTIL I USED ONE. I walked into the store and immediatly loved it and started saving up that very day

wait till you've had it a while, they start going crappy like PC's do too in time, all brand new systems work amazingly fast, but then they just tend to slow down. You will see, and then realise a re-install is needed to get back up to good speeds.

Well this is exactly what will NOT happen because of the OSX system architecture. Spend a few minutes at http://www.apple.com/macosx and you will get the grep of it.

The way i see it, Macs are fast, stable and stylish. Go for one !

no need to visit the site, i have first hand experience. I understand that macs are designed faster and their architecture is faster, it's just in reality, well in my experience they aren't and they do crash, but then again that is on my freinds computer and he aint no fanatic so he probably doesn't keep it running as smooth as i keep my PC.

Macs are better. I have a PC and a Mac and I use the Mac all the time. In fact my PC has been reduced to a DivX player for my TV. It's just a much better user experience on a Mac.

There are a few disadvantages with Mac, tho:
- Hard to find warez if you don't want to buy all your software. But LimeWire has most of it
- They are more expensive than Windos-machines
- As far as I know Motorola is slow at developing faster CPUs. But it's very likely that Apple will switch to IBM's next-gen PowerPC chips
- You will loose your prestigious "geek-title" after you score chicks with your PowerBook

yeh, a few things to have a think about though. How come MAC users allways have to say macs are better and go on about it? i dont see anywhere on the windows site saying hey all mac users, windows is better... maybe it's because windows dont have to?

Posted by MacPrince
Umm...maybe because the Mac really is better?

When someone is saying that they are better than you, and you know that it's true, you keep your mouth shut, for your own sake.

Oh, and before you say it: no, Windows is not better because more people use it. There are far more cockroaches on this planet than there are people, but that doesn't mean that the cockroach is a higher life form.

I wish I had never asked now I did not want to start an argument it was just that I was sick to the back teeth with my PC crashing all the time and YES I do keep it healthy all the time and have all the latest anti virus stuff on here but it just gets me that it always seems to crash at the moment of saving work you have spent ages on and then have to start all over again. I do not want something that is so fast that it finishes doing something before I have started it I just want reliable surely that is not to much to ask these days. Ever heard of the Hair and the tortous.

PC are better for games....
Not only are there "a few" more games available but they are also faster when it comes down to fps(fps is GOD).
I think this is because most games are made primarily for the pc and therefore is optimized for the x86 architecture.
Oh and 3dcards are slightly ahead on the pc I believe(this might be wrong).

And windows XP is quite stable.
And computers = more speed per buck.

When i said about keeping it running smoothly i meant using programs like window washer and ad-aware, and not just installing stuff and not properly deleting it, programs these days come with so much shit. Anyway, i do like macs, i think they look sweet, and osx looks sweet, but i just prefer PC's, in fact i prefer having 2 buttons on my mouse with a scroll weel. hehe..

I don't want to be rude but you have obviously NO idea of what you're talking about. I'm using my Logitech MouseMan Wheel with my PowerBook G4 and in my opinion the driver is actually better than the XP driver since there are more ways to configure the different buttons (and it doesn't forget your settings when you update your OS). It's right that Apple only make one-button mice but you can use almost any USB mouse on your Mac so it doesn't really matter. And OS X has native support for two-button mice and so do all OS X apps.

The Mac is not made for games, so if your computer is 90% games console and 10% computer you shouldn't buy a Mac.

All in all I guess it's about personal preferences. I bought a Mac because I believe this is the best computer on the planet and I will never buy a PC again.

yeh, i was only joking about the mouse...

but here is just a difference in opinion. Anyway, this is a mobile phone forum, not a PC forum so maybe we should drop it. my p800 comes 2moro and i can sync it perfectly with my PC, hmmm, cant wait.

hehe, sorry, dont mean to be rude..

If you're using Windows 98 or ME, try 2000 instead. It's a lot more stable.

The biggest problem as i see it, is that PCīs have an open architecture and everyone can and do make hardware for it. It is double-edged in the sense that Microsoft OS runs just fine on hardware that is 100% compatible and 3:rd party software that is well programmed but in the real world, too often you put hardware together that have incompatibility problems and/or install apps that are poorly written that has memory leaks and such. That is a problem Apple donīt have, at least not to the same extent since they make all the hardware themselves. Now the flipside of that coin is that they can charge pretty much what prices they want (and they obviously do too)
I have an old Compaq P75 clunker at home with FreeBSD as a router/firewall/webserver before i recompiled the kernel it had an uptime of 396 days.. Iīm not saying a Mac wouldnīt achive that as well, but _I_ havenīt seen one come close yet
Bottom line: PC -IS FASTER- period and carefully put together and with Windows 2000 or XP at least as reliable as any Mac out there..
I have the deepest respect for OSX *of course, since i run the core OS myself * But i donīt have the money to buy a Mac with the same performance as my PC.. and i doubt that i would spend that much money on a computer even IF i had the money to be honest..
Just my opinion..

Respect!

This might help you in your decision to switch or not.

GUYS!!!!!!! Stop!!!

You can't just compare a Mac with a PC... The're very different from each other..
It's like comparing a Concorde and a F117 Nighthawk...

The Mac is a standard in the Graphics industry (However the number of PC's is increasing a lot in the industry).

And the PC is just... THE standard... You can use many different operating systems and with the MAC... well... good luck.

I'm not saying PC is better then MAC, but it's just more universal...

And for those who wanna get rid of Windows... Get LINUX (and a "How to use" book)

There are actually a number of operating systems for the PowerPC-platform, like Linux and BeOS (which had almost no software at all). But why use an alternative to Mac OS X when it's the best?

And yes, let's end this discussion now. I can't believe it hasn't been locked by moderators or moved to mobile phone free zone.

so we conclude, that they are different computers for different people.

no more said!
