Switching ATT -> T-Mobile: How To?

I have a T68i on the ATT network. I think the only other carrier in my area that offers GSM service is T-Mobile. I want to switch. How do I go about doing this? I bought my phone from ATT, and I've read some posts here that that means my phone is locked. Will ATT allow me to unlock my phone? I read some posts that they can't? Can SonyEricsson help me with that? Is it easy to get a SIM for T-Mobile, or do I have to buy one of their phones to get a SIM? Can I even use the T68i with t-mobile? Help appreciated. Thanks.

I went through something similar recently. AT&T/T-Mobile/SonyEricsson will not help you unlock your phone. The easiest way to do this is to use an unlocking service. There are several available, however I used one that I would recommend to others. Go to http://www.unlockyourgsm.com. Please use referral code 1070. They support different phones and will also be able to upgrade the internal software on the phone (not necessary for the unlock feature to work, but it will remove any AT&T proprietary software).

You can go to T-Mobile and just purchase a SIM card. If you also get a free phone, I would take it and use it as backup.

Good luck.

ATT is saying that they will charge me $175 to buy out of my contract. I wish there was a way to just end it. How much are T-Mobile SIMs? Is a T-Mobile "free" phone the kind where you give them a bunch of money up front and they send you a rebate in a few months?

What's ATT proprietary software?

I was hoping that if I had to take/send it somewhere to have the phone unlocked, it wouldn't be as far as Texas. I started another thread looking for people locally here.

T-Mobile SIM card is $20 ... and T-Mobile did help me unlock my T68i

Who did you talk to at T-Mobile to get it unlocked? Was it at the T-Mobile Store, the T-Mobile Cart, their 800 number???...

You are lucky that T-Mobile helped you unlock the phone. I called several times and they could not / would not help. Neither would AT&T. Most unlocking (3rd party) services charge between $20 - 40 (more if you want software update). What I meant before by proprietary software was the AT&T logo. Most reps I talked to were not too helpful and said it was a policy that they would not do this.

I called the CS (1-800 number) and asked to unlock my phone. I think you have to be a T-Mobile customer though. There's a thread telling you specifically what to do (sorry I don't know how to link it). It is posted by marco_dj2000 with topic "T-mobile (voicestream) sim unlock department unlock my t68 for free"

Thanks! Now if only ATT would let me out of their contract... I think this is totally SH!TTY customer service to strong arm your customer into paying you a buttload of money if they decide that they don't want your service. I tried called T-Mobile and asking them if they had any incentive for me to switch over, and they said that it's not like landline long distance where carriers will buy out your contract to get you as a customer. How come carriers fight over us for long distance, but not for wireless? Weird.

Hi,

If you cannot get your Subsidy unlock from from Tmobile or ATTWS, check this website out, www.unlockyourgsm.com

We can unlock the phone fast and cheap - letting you use the phone on any network.

Thanks,

Brian

T-Mobile cannot and will not unlock your T68i if you bought it from AT&T. They can only unlock phones bought from them. AT&T does not unlock their own phones. You're better off having a third party unlock your phone.

you can do it at many websites they will remotely unlock, but you can also do it via adam in las vegas, www.gsmphonesource.com

i know a way you can get out of your contract w/o losing any money but you need a really good friend who sells T-mobile phones. Becuase T-mobile pays them $180 to sign you up so you could just pay AT&T the $175 and then when he eventually gets his $180 for the T-mobile sign up he could give it to you (they get it once you have been a customer long enough). Like i said he better be a good friend.
