Nokia lives? Two ‘high-end' Android Nougat smartphones leaked

Nokia is planning to launch two new smartphones running on Google’s new Android Nougat operating system, apparently.

A new report by specialist blog NokiaPowerUser claims that Nokia is currently working on two high-end Android smartphones that will feature “premium metallic design and the famous Nokia feel”. The website cites its “trusted sources” for this information, so we can’t verify these details unfortunately – take this with due caution.

According to the blog, the new phones will run Android 7.0 Nougat straight out of the box. That’s the new Google OS that was announced earlier this year, but it’s currently only in beta.

Apparently, one of the devices will feature a 5.2-inch display, while the other handset will sport a larger 5.5-inch screen. The blog says that display resolution isn’t confirmed yet, but that we “can expect a QHD resolution OLED display”. Other possible (but not confirmed) features include a fingerprint scanner, an improved Z-Launcher UI, and better image sensors that may “be the most sensitive ever” used on a Nokia smartphone.

Regarding release date, the blog expects that both phones will be unveiled “towards the end of 2016”, but that this may be pushed back to the first quarter of 2017. Back in 2015, Nokia's CEO Rajiv Suri confirmed that the company would re-enter the mobile phone market in 2016. And then during Mobile World Congress 2016, Suri revealed the phone would be a premium device.

They did actually release four entry-level Android smartphones in 2014, around the time they were being assimilated by the Borg.

Would be quite interesting .... Sony SHOULD be worried as Nokia has a HUGE history of quality camera tech/involvement in their latter S60 phones and that ugly 40MP+ phone.

By the way, yesterday I read about two Lumias, 520 and 525, running(or trying to) CM13(Android 6.0.1). So, who knows...

It has been a WHILE since I've been 'excited' about a new phone.... I'm not gonna lie, I want one of these!

I'm going to wait to see their flagship before I judge.

It will be interesting to see what is left of the once juggernaut of mobile. I fully expect to see an average Android with average specs and the NOKIA logo slapped on it.
Unless they do what Motorola which is make mid end phones that are as good as flagships.

Do they still have their wide distribution channels and their camera expertise? I highly doubt it, MS took a huge chunk of those things if I'm not mistaken. What I think may remain typical Nokia is their top quality RF tech.

I second that. This Nokia is nothing like the Nokia that we want. Their entire philosophy has probably changed since Microsoft not to mention their resources. I expect low and mid range devices, with slab phones there is only so much you can do with design so as much as I'd like to see some of their funky handsets, its not really happening. The one thing they could do is skin Android and add some new software concepts.

I hope they will manufacture a flagship as it would be nice to see them back . I could be wrong but I think they didn't sell the know how just production capacity (which now can be replaced by foxconn). It would have been nice to see new phones before Christmas, I get a feeling they might announce them next year at mobile world congress in March. If they can come with an interesting phone I will fully support them

Indeed.

I think low and mid end is a safe bet as that is where the market is moving, flagships are expensive to make and require a major USP these days.

A nice lite and customizable Android skin with a touch of that Nordic obsession with fine details that go a long way will be welcome.

Aussie,

MS purged a lot from Nokia, and when they did many expertise left to companies like Apple, Samsung and others, and some went and started Jolla.

IMO, the NOKIA we loved is gone, to fit into the current scene, they may decide to make some major changes in their philosophies, and focus less on some areas they were once brilliant.

I guess its all down to available resources, but their Mobile department was stripped of a lot of crucial resources by MS.

The thin
