CSD as fast as GPRS?

I see no difference in speed when using GPRS or dial-up (CSD @ 9600bps). T-Mobile USA says it is supposed to be as fast as a regular modem (up to 56.6kbps). Pictures load in almost the same time either way.
Any way to check the data transfer speed. Any site do this?
Any thoughts as to why GPRS is so slow on my T300?
Anyone else posting their experience here would be a help.
Thanks

under optimum conditions it is faster - download a picture or ringtone using CSD then GPRS then see the difference - that is if your network has it operating properly

i just got my CSD with T Mobile USA and i say its crap. i just got my p800 back and wanted to download some music and videos using CSD so it wont eat up my mega bytes and it would barely even load)i had to dial 5 times before it even started working)
GPRS in T mobile USA is almost 56k under ideal conditions and if you want to surf esato on your t300 it will take you less than 5 seconds to view a post if your on GPRS

GPRS is a joke, you will hardly EVER get a faster speed, you steal more timeslots to increase speed, and 90% of cellsites are very low on them anyway. Maybe in the early hours of the morning, or in the US cos less people use GSM mobiles. The thing was sold on a technical possibilty which will hardly ever work in practice. Anyone thought of HSCSD on Orange it's 10pmin at all times, and is actually faster than GPRS most of the time.

I am on orange in uk using there gprs access pack
i also have a works phone on o2 (nokia 6310) dail up wap
saw this thread and thought i would test downloading a pic made sure they were same size pic
guess what there was hardly any difference in time.
also even connecting via gprs isnt alot quick by the time its gone through the connecting loading and orange logo the dail up isnt to far behind (within about 5 secs)
i will still use my gprs access pack as its very good just for filling time in looking at the esato forum
but gprs is hardly going to set the world on fire as it stands at the minute

Hscsd on orange is 25p per min not 10-and it runs at 28.8kps but can slowdown to 14.4 if busy-wait for 3g-we'll all be flying

Ha,GPRS is faster, connection is faster and scrolling down a page of esato is a lot faster too,i get 50 mins free every day but i always use GPRS!I only use it for text only sites tho,i use the dial-up for d/l and pic sites :-)

You need a hscsd package, not just added onto ordinary account, and 14.4/28.8 is faster than gprs 90% of the time.

Mmm actually anyone on orange contract can have high a speed data line regardless of talkplan-in fact all contract accounts should have it automaticly-you just need the right handset-its 20per min if you are on the hscsd data plan but 25per min on any other tarif-gprs is now more cost effective.

Ahh you could be right, I just checked the date on the file I stored from the website, it says feb/01 so probably gone up quite a bit.
Doesn't time fly these days.

CSD and HSCSD are slower than GPRS (again, if optimal conditions for all), however GPRS is not time based so I CAN STAY CONNECTED TO Yahoo! Mesenger on WAP all afternoon and occasionally click 'refresh' to check messages.
You wouldn't want to try that with CSD or HSCSD.

Both CSD and GPRS use 9600 bps transferrate per Timeslot...
Now while downloading anything using CSD, you can reach max. 1-1.2kB/s
But when you use GPRS, depends on your phone, u have 3 or 4 tiems 9600bps, that's some 3.6-4.8 kB/s
Some countries, of course, use 14400bps transferrate per Timeslot...
And here is the so called "real maximum" of GPRS, which means 5.4-7.2kB/s
2 Cophia: Sorry to say this... are you sure? SO listen up:
GPRS is passive connection, it's speed is floating... 1Timeslot, 2 or 3, or 4, or 2 again, or 1, depending on the speech traffic under the cell you are talking... and anyways, either you have the whole 4 Timeslots for you, it's still just passive, you will never have the e.g. 57.6kbps transferrate all the time, it will go down to 14.4, 33.6, back to 57.6, then again to 33.6, maybe it will remain the whole time mostly on 28.8..
While HSCSD has EVERYWHERE 14.4kbps per Timeslot, meaning that if you have HSCSD 2+1, then you have FULLTIME 28.8kpbs connection, without any speed floating! So just for info, HSCSD is faster than GPRS.... Just try it, you will see the difference...
Cheerz,
Shady
