7 in 10 of world's population using smartphones by 2020

Around 70 per cent of the world's population will be using smartphones in five years' time, with 90 per cent of people aged over 6 years old possessing a mobile

Smartphone subscriptions are set to more than double to 6.1 billion, with around 80 per cent of new subscriptions will come from Asia Pacific, the Middle East and Africa due to greater affordability across developing markets, research from Ericsson Mobility Report found.

Smartphone subscriptions globally currently stand at around 2.6 billion, compared to 7.1 billion total mobile accounts in 2014, which the report predicts will grow to 9.2 billion in five years.

5G is also expected to play a part in driving smartphone sign-ups, as take up is expected to be more rapid than 4G's. China alone is expected to account for some 400 million mobile subscriptions by 2020.

Currently around 4.9 billion people in the world own some 7.2 billion mobile subscriptions, thanks to owning multiple devices and inactive accounts.

The forecast predicted there will be 26 billion connected devices by 2020 across the globe, with watching video to account for 60 per cent of global mobile data traffic by this time. Many first-time internet users in developing countries will browse using a mobile device due to limited access to fixed broadband.

Sporting events particularly are helping to drive an upturn in online mobile engagement, with mobile traffic five times higher than average during last year's World Cup final between Germany and Argentina.

The report found a correlation between screen size and video consumption, with tablet users spending an average of 50 per cent more time watching video than average mobile broadband users. Despite the rise in popularity of phablets, Android tablet owners still watched around 70 per cent more video than their phablet owner equivalents.

No one seems to be able to live without a phone anymore.

The 'phone' part is what I use the least.

Yeah, and so do others. It's kinda funny to see little TV's in people's pockets on my way to school. I just don't understand how can someone walk like a jerk with their plasma TV in front of them and with earphones in their ears.
It's just wrong. And unsafe.

I can't either. I do wear non-isolating in ears on my bicycle though.

somethings are a bit off with this report:

China has over 780 million subscribers already on LTE using current cellphones; not 400 million.

Now ... 5G whatever it really is in terms of bandwidths, available networks and services should do the following:
Cellphones become modems yet loose battery life significantly.
New Battery technologies to handle more than 4-7hr battery lifespans on one charge will be required, else it will NOT sell at all.
6 year olds ... I still don't see how 6 year olds will have a MEANINGFUL use for a smartphone.
- their in school 80% of their day
- schools already have computers and calculators on a private network
^ this is particularly important in the land of CHINA to limit outside internet based on cultural xenophobe like practises (or so I'm presumably getting notions against Google)
* Tablets will seem to serve 6 yr olds much better. Motor controls are not as fine tuned, strong and fast for 6yr olds as say 12/14yr olds. Dexterity is more accute the older you get ... but again I'm on the other side of the world so based on culture and use of technology and education completely differs here.

We'll see MORE ENDPOINTS connected
* THIS will be the prize winner.
> TV's will not only be fully smart, but will have 4G/LTE/5G connections - bye-bye cable/satellite providers with horrible programming price gouging.
> Cars, Medical devices (not adapters, REAL medical devices) will be connected.
> Security monitoring, surveillance will not have just "backup" connectivity on wireless provider networks, it will be fully LTE/5G connected with a secure infrastructure so YOUR data or the corporate data is completely isolated from the global internet and packaged under the highest security - BTW - this has already begun.
Fridges, will be fully connected more than ever before with your banking account/credit card access for purchases and billing in advance when items get low or run out - your order will be timed upon your arrival from work or waiting with a locked case that only your "app" and NFC phone can unlock along with a code.
Children with wireless tracking wrist bands for families that need security and pedo's with police tracking in public under parole where the entire public can ALSO track them in REAL TIME against their children's wear-abouts.

Has anyone of you ever REALLY read the Superman comic books ... in particular about Brainiac?!
When privacy goes out the window in the sake of convenience and sold on "connectivity" you'll see drastic changes:
- Your car insurance wanting access to your driving habits (oh wait this is already happening here in North America: BelAir is just one insurance company with an adapter on ODBII car connector and app on your phone that uploads (direction, rate of speed, approach speed to stop lights, left/right hand turn indicators when wheel's Turns Lock-to-Lock is close to tell lane change, etc etc) - they give you an immediate 20% discount the first year only. Now instead of historical data for previous years of wether you're a GOOD Driver or not, or if you're in a BAD driving Zone for high interest rates ... they'll know it in REAL time. You thought banking rates fluctuate for your interest/car payments/mortgages, lol think again.
- There is also medical devices via your smartwatch. If your phone OS has nothing to do with security whats to say your very PERSONAL data is not sold where 1) your company's HMO/Insurance rates and coverage is not drastically changed for the worse?! IF corporate insurance covers you then most likely that changed rate comes out of your salary paycheques, etc etc.

There is a LOT of ways this can heavily impact society.
We need to be aware.

PS: No this is NOT a paranoid fear post ... I've been researching and have a few ideas.

You're not paranoid. Its happening right now.
You're being watched.

I'm thinking, if I showed a non-touchscreen phone to my kids would they even recognize what they are? And they wouldn't probably even recognize the brand names..
