If you think IPX8 grade waterproofing is already astounding, prepare to pick up your jaw after seeing this new metal etching technique. Researchers at the University of Rochester were able to come up with a laser-etching method that creates what is probably the most super hydrophobic sheet of metal in the world. It's so hydrophobic that water doesn't simply roll off to one side when tilted at an angle. Water drops actually bounce off repeatedly until they either fall off the edge.

I'm astonished... This innovation has surely a lot of potential. Although I think we'll have to wait a lot of years before seeing it applied in industrial production... But it's amazing to see how many things technology can bring to our lives.

You have a point there. We won't be seeing mobile devices with this material in the near future. I guess 2017?

I guess so. Probably in 2020 too, and maybe only on devices that require a rugged/professional usage, in that case an hydrophobic metal would come in handy, combined with shock-proof materials.

Amazing this doesn't allow the surface tension of the water molecules to break/bond to the surface.

This technique changes a LOT of things not just water on a metal ... think space travel allowing air to remain tight without a vacuum; submarines as well

Hahaha I was reading this topic to my little daughter and she just opened her mouth in amazement and said "Is that Illuminati dad."
I just laughed lol
