Samsung Galaxy S5 Announced

One thing that really bugs me somehow, not that it would really make a difference, is that the S5 has only 2GB of RAM.
Samsung always tried to push maximum specs in its flagships, be it the Galaxy S or the Note series. The Galaxy S4 was better than the Note 2, Note 3 better than S4 and S5 better than Note 3.
But Note 3 having 3GB RAM and S5 2GB kind of surprised me and even now does.

It's the reason why I'm not getting the S5, I also found it odd that they went backwards on the RAM compared to Note 3, that's why I think Samsung are trying to tell us that the very top specs are moving to the Note series, which could be why they launched the NotePRO series of tablets.

Mu guess is that with Android 4.4.2, the new architecture of the Snapdragon 801 and the new TW version, 2G of Ram is sufficient

This is very interesting

If it actually works they've removed one of the biggest disadvantages of BSI sensors.. I need to see samples but in theory it does sound promising. The S5 has a relatively big sensor as well.. close to the 1520/ICON/Z1/Z2

Posted by tyko
You have some photo samples here

They are good but not impressive, I would say Z1/ lumia 1520 quality.

Posted by skblakee
The Note series needs more RAM because of the extra software which run on it and the larger screen. Air command in particular. I dont see the S5 as being substantially better than the Note 3 though. Touchwiz needs to be toned down to unleash the power of the CPU. Apparently there will be an update for the Note which will give it the new Touchwiz look that will come on the S5. I hope it tones down touchwiz a good bit.

Posted by DexterMoser
I'm really having some trouble with RAM, more RAM would be welcome.
S5 doesn't need more RAM than Note 3, but definitely not less than Note 3...

Nevertheless I'm really curious about S5's camera performance in low light, like to see some objective comparison withother flagships.

I don't think that the larger screen requires more RAM

The Russians already have samples. They pit the S5 camera against nokia and the note 3.

surprisingly, the note 3 seems to be taking better photos. the S5 seems to have a quality comparable to that of z1 or maybe z2. they're noisy.

You seem to be be lost, pal, I knew what you meant, but due to the fact that we really aren't sure if the device will be a premium S5 or a whole new exclusive line of phones or an internally (cpu, gpu and RAM) upgraded S5, hence why I said a special S5 or F brand, we just aren't sure what Samsung are doing.

And you keep being defensive.
http://www.phonearena.com/new[....]lineup...-and-a-Note-4_id53906

Who's frustrated? You seem to be looking for something that isn't there.

Was a joke... You know what this is?
Oh, that defensive behavior...

BTW, you seem to like putting people in a box, you say "Sammy boys", like we are Samsung zealots, yet Aussieland uses a iPhone5S, a Note 3, a Lumia 1520 and iPad Air
Bonovox uses an LG G2
I use an S4 and iPad4
and Rikken also has a mix of brands, so not only are you lost, but you're talking utter rubbish. just stop, you're embarrassing yourself.

Why so serious? (or defensive?)
C'mon... Don't be so grouchy.
Wasn't this a debate?
Very coherent coming from who said this... (not)

Chill out dude, my question was about Samsung's treatment over it's flagship.
This piece of ugly plastic can't be taken seriously.
Heart rate monitor? Fingerprint scanner?
If it even had an RGB amoled arrangement but,it don't.

I really don't care about 3GB of RAM and i would like to try another brand like i did my entire mobile life.
Had Sony Ericsson since 2003, tried Nokias, Siemens, Benq-Siemens, Samsungs, Motorolas, LGs and now i'm with Sony till another manufacturer offer me a better thing.
HTC don't sell phones in my country so, what is better than Xperia Z2?
This uglyfied S4 don't... (yes, S4 is "cuter")

So what you just did there is a post a link that I just posted 2 posts before you
Yep, I'm super grouchy now, lol.
Your question was why we are being defensive, when we are debating.

If you don't like the GS5 then that's your opinion, one that I share to a certain extent, you could've just said that from the 1st post, we were having a good debate until you came in and rambled on about nothing.

Oh by the way, Samsung have been offering a better "thing" ,as you say, for many years now.

Luca-s

Again what are you talking about? Your link seem to contradict your initial post and then you start a whole rant about something different (how much you dislike Samsung Galaxy). And since your mind has been made up about how you dislike Samsung Galaxy i am not sure what type of debate you want to have in a Samsung thread

The initial post wasn't about the link i've posted.
Was about the "victim" quoted.
I'm not debating. This happens when we have a dialogue.

I was just looking on GSM arena, and they have their weekly round up of what their news was this week, in previous years. In it they mentioned the Galaxy S2. I noticed that the S5 looks more like the S2 than I realised. I really liked the S2 design and the S5 is basically a revamped version of this design, rather than the S3 & S4 design.

So ive kind of realised the S5 is more of what I wanted from Samsung rather than a curved design of the S3 which ive liked for the last two years, but it does start looking a bit too bland compared to other phones which are more striking visually.

Good news I have a Galaxy S5 instore ahead of the launch bad news is it won't charge amd the screen flickers. I hope this isn't going to be like the S4 launch witch was a disaster in retail stores as for weeks we kept getting return after return.Fingers crossed this is just a one off

Posted by northmonkey
I'd really like to see some camera samples at some point XperiaJunkie if that's possible?

Cheers.

Posted by XperiaJunkie
The phone is now down to 2% battery so I can't take any photos but I did snap a few earlier on and they were very good until you look at any detail, very blurry and lot of noise I will see I can get them off but not hopeful due to the phone being faulty.

Posted by northmonkey
That's fair enough, I'd just like to see how they look compared to Z1.

Posted by aussieland1
Played with one today and I was very impressed with the performance - very smooth, I don't know if it is s801 or kit kat. I remember last year I thought s4 was laggy when I first played with one in the store. Also I like the larger icons (why didn't they appear on my Note 3 Samsung? ) and how light it feels. The settings menu although strange looking makes more sense compared with the current tabbed one

The one thing I didn't like though which surprised me was the look.....seemed uglier in real life than in the photo. It has a more rounded aspect than s4 but it doesn't look good at all IMO. Also the larger bezels don't help- in short I don't like the looks. I will have another look some other time (Samsung store was crazy busy today ) maybe it will grow on me

Posted by daviep
can anyone confirm if the s5 uses micro or nano sim, seems to be conflicting data on different tech sites

Posted by XperiaJunkie
It is definitely nano sim at least the one I had Is

Another year another Galaxy S with great battery life

Galaxy S5 battery life tests show promising results

PhoneArena

Very encouraging.

Well the S801 should make it better battery life and smoother than the S4

The Best Smartphone Display

Gizmodo

Seems Samsung really have another winner here. When it comes to display I can't see any other Android maker catching up except maybe LG, the G3 should come with quite a jaw dropping display if it is QHD.

Well, here's my G2 for comparison with an LG S5 theme

From Displaymate:
Best Smartphone Display: Based on our extensive Lab tests and measurements, the Galaxy S5 is the Best performing Smartphone display that we have ever tested. It has a long list of new records for best Smartphone display performance including: Highest Brightness, Lowest Reflectance, Highest Color Accuracy, Infinite Contrast Ratio, Highest Contrast Rating in Ambient Light, and smallest Brightness Variation with Viewing Angle. The Galaxy S5 has raised the bar for top display performance up by another notch – an impressive achievement for OLED technology!

I find I still prefer IPS like my G2 or for example the Lumia 1520. Still rich colours but not too over saturated & never any risk of burn in. The Galaxy S 3 was probably the worst screen for outdoor viewing with a horrible blue tint I did see a dummy model of the S5 in O2 store the other day it looks better in white but still think the design is just too bland & too much like S4

Posted by etaab
That must have been a faulty S3 screen then, mine has no problems, neither does the girlfriends or other people I know who own S3's. Which is a lot.

Posted by Bonovox
It wasn't a faulty screen I have seen many S3's like that & other AMOLED screens the whites have a blue tint

Excellent!

The Galaxy S5 went on sale early in S.Korea due to the upcoming carrier ban which will force some S.Korean carriers to close sales for a period of time.
Despite all this it is already managing great sales:

I think in this shot the Sony is the clear winner as the GS5 when cropped is a horrible blurry mess.

As promised here are more photos of the GS5 vs my Z1 the rest of the photos are taken in different resolutions and aspect ratio but the settings on both phones I tried to mach up as much as possible.

^It seems there's something wrong with your S5 unit? Because those pics are just bad.

Posted by XperiaJunkie
This is already a replacement of a faulty one I had and the image quality was exactly the same on the previous one I had.

Posted by davidsic
Mmm weird cause i saw the opposite in reviews except for very low lights

What do you think about these ? http://www.eprice.com.tw/mobile/talk/124/4899662/1/rv/sony-xperia-z2-review/

Posted by XperiaJunkie
I do think the images should be better than that and equal to the Z1 at least. I don't think the device is faulty I just think the phone in auto mode just got things a bit wrong for example the ISO of the low light shot is 2000 and of the Z1 only 800, plus the fact it is a close up shot that may have something to do with it. That is just a guess though as both phones were set to auto ISO but as not really having any decent knowledge in photography again it is just a guess.
