It will be interesting to see how WP and Android handle that Sony sensor.. I am not really impressed with the images from the Z1 so far, so I don't expect much from this one as well.

Posted by Sonysta
You are correct, but if he confirmed all this and have a camera with image quality slightly higher than the Xperia Z1, now makes much more business than the Lumia 1020 !

yes, the 1520 is more "future proof" .. 1080p and a much better CPU/GPU combo compared to the 1020.

Its way too big for my taste, but I know a lot of people will love it.

About the camera.. I am not sure if Nokia will be able to get more out of the sensor with Windows Phone compared to Sony with android.. it will be very interesting to see

Posted by Bonovox
It amazes me that nobody talks about the device anymore its just the camera. Anyone would think that's all it was

Posted by cu015170
They all do the same thing... not much to differentiate really, besides the camera and the size of the screen.

What more can you do on a Z1 that you won't be able to do on a GS3 ? Or a 1020 and an iPhone 4s ? If you exclude the difference in the camera and the screens .. its all the same sh1t

@Cu015170...

Said all... As always you were accurate in your comment !

Well the Z1 is water proof compared to those others there's a talking point to differentiate

However the 1520 does seem very good, just a bit to big for me.

Lumia 1520 won't have the Z1 sensor. I don't know where you read this silly speculation.

Z1 sensor is a custom sensor EXCLUSIVELY meant for XPERIA and not a commercial Sony CMOS sensor. The biggest commercial mobile Sony sensor is only 1/3" and max 16 MP as of now.

The GS4 zoom uses a sensor with the exact same dimensions as the Z1.. do you think Samsung made their own ? If so, Nokia might be buying it from them instead.

Posted by randomuser
Samsung do make their own image sensors, yes.

I know, but they don't always use their own.. just like Apple and Nokia

Posted by randomuser
Mainly because their sensors are not that great.

But I don't think Lumia 1520 will use Samsung sensor, most probably a Toshiba sensor just like 808 and 1020.

Posted by cu015170
Ya.. Sammy are actually using a Sony sensor in the GS4

http://chipworks.force.com/ca[....]ionStr=ListProduct&searchText=

But yes, I hope the 1520 gets its own custom made sensor.

Posted by randomuser
SGS2, SGS3, Note, Note 2, Note 3, SGS4 all use Sony sensor.

EDIT:

This is the S4 zoom sensor

Samsung S5K2P1

Resolution 4608x3456 (16 MP)
Pixel Size(um) 1.34
Pixel Type BSI
Optical Format(inch) 1/2.33

EDIT 2:

This could be the Lumia 1520 Sensor -

Toshiba TCM5115CL

Optical Format: 1/2.3 inch
Resolution: 20 megapixels
Pixel Size: 1.2 micrometers
Frame Rate: 30fps @ 20M pixel, RAW10
60fps @ 1080P
100fps @ 720P

^ thanks.. that's probably it , it makes sense since Nokia have been using Toshiba sensors for a while now.

I like this part

"Toshiba’s previous king of pixel miniaturization was a 16 mp 1/2.3″ sensor with 1.34 µm pixel size. The pixels on their new ‘TCM5115CL’ sensor are now only 1.2 µm in size — necessary to accomodate the higher count on the same surface. This of course translates into worse signal-to-noise ratio, and an even lower diffraction limit than before. What this means is that the new sensor will probably be even noisier than the old one, and that chances of it to be able to resolve pixel-level detail are close to zero, considering that your typical 20 mp compact rarely sports a fast prime lens."

They did the same thing with the 1020 sensor...

@cu015170

It's f2.4 not f1.9 , 2520 has f1.9 aperture.

Nice phone with very nice excusive apps from Nokia.. I liked the mirroring screen app allowing to stream 1520's wireless to any display through an internet browser.

But all in all, not killer device. Had it had a smart pen input and a slot for it ala the Note, then it would have been that killer device.

It seems all OEMs are missing the point that it is not only the screen size what made the Note popular! The S-Pen functionality is simply amazingly useful!

Had the 1520 had the same functionality I would have aimed for it over the 1020.

I was very tempted by the Note III. But Android is not my thing. While WP frustrates me at times, Android has its issues as well. And being all deeply bound and relying on Windows 8 for my main PC, WP will always have upper hand for me. It integrates more seamlessly with a W8 machine..

I won't get the 1020 right away though. Will wait for the price to go down. Or maybe wait at least to get hints of its successor and see if an upgrade would be worth.. As it seems Nokia are announcing their high-end PureView mid year.. Maybe next year Microsoft would push it even earlier, maybe second quarter release with Windows Phone 8.1..

EDIT: Would love to see how the 1520 will compare against the G2 and Z1 btw.. Waiting for these comparisons..

The app collection on WP is pretty good and it will only get better since they have some momentum now.

Instashit is coming, so its flipboard.. and several other useless one like that

^ not bad.. these are all captured with the Black software update which should bring improvements in noise reduction and color reproduction.

I am guessing those algorithms might be different for the 1020, but since both phones are oversampling, I am guessing that they are similar.

Seriously, what is this?! Trying to win the all BS photography blogging on the internet?
I passed over this link the other day, but have just read it now.
It's nauseating to read such low quality articles. Why do these people even bother to write.

Yes pushing MP count by itself is theoretically stupid to do.
But fortunately we are out of the MP race for a while now.

But doesn't mean that by time as technology advances MP be kept fixed on a certain density!

Sensor technology is still advancing quickly. As the blogger mentions the 36MP D800 and blames it for making MP count a trend all over again, couldn't he think why Nikon couldn't pull such a high MP before?! That why the heck they would risk all their reputation for releasing a professional DSLR with such a big flaw?!

Same as processors are not just about GHz and number of cores, sensors are not just about size and pixel density.
There is a lot more going on with the tech making out a sensor.

Today's sensors with same or small sizes, and much higher densities pull way better detail, noise, DR, and color depth performance!

A 24 MP APS-C sensor in 2012 is thousands of miles ahead in performance to a 10 MP APS-C sensor from 2006. Significant difference. Nowadays 1" sensors are better than APS-C sensors from few years ago! We're talking about less than half the size here and also few more MPs.

Same applies to the 808 and 1020. With smaller size and hence higher density the 1020 pulls better noise and detail.

Yes theoretically higher density (smaller microns) mean less signal-to-noise ratio, but if the these smaller photosites are able to collect more light and hence more information than those on older sensors then this lesser ratio is countered pretty well. It's not just about BSI. The technology making these sensor and these photosites advanced and reaches new milestones and higher accuracies with time.

And then he talks about diffraction! And he claims that with big sensors diffraction is no problem! This is nuts!
Diffraction has way more to do with aperture and lens quality! At certain aperture where diffraction is contained, it doesn't matter anymore how small the photosites are! On the other hand, push the best lens in the world up to F/22 and experience the vast drop in sharpness!

At big aperture it's rarely a problem unless the lens is rubbish.

Cameraphones are now equipped with up to a full stop aperture than the older F/2.8 standard.
At such big fixed aperture, diffraction can not be a problem.

Great stabilization, the next step of progress of Nokia

Posted by cu015170
OIS should be the same as the one on the 1020.. but it might be easier to stabilize a smaller module

- The sensor size is smaller: 1/2’5″ (25mm2) instead of 1/1’5″ (50mm2).
- Pixel technology is the same as on the Nokia Lumia 1020: 1.12um BSI Toshiba.
- The 20MP sensor shoots 19MP in 4:3 and 17MP in 16:9
- The camera offers 2x “hi-resolution” (= lossless) zoom in 5MP (3x in 1080p video).
- Optics design is the same as in the Lumia 1020: 1 glass + 5 plastic lenses.
- Aperture: F2.4 on the Lumia 1520 (F2.2 on the 1020)
- OIS is the same system: Barrel shift with 1/3s in auto mode
- Low light (module SNR10): 14 lux (9 lux on the 1020)

you've gone phablet crazy, 1st the Mega, then the N3 and now this?

all good. OT, I saw the game against the Brookly Nets this past week, they had King James and D-Wade working up quite a sweat!

I never had the Mega- by the time the price was decent enough N3 came out.... But yeah i am phablet crazy. 😊

OT don't worry about king james- Miami started a bit slow but i am sure they will be back- last year they had a 26-27 win streak?

I am liking the color reproduction on Lumia Black... it kind of looks like this photo was taken with a Symbian phone They kind of lost some fine detail, but noise/grain levels are looking better than any other WP out there.

Can't wait to see what the black update will do for the 1020.. since it does need quite a bit of work.

more here, all pureview clicks. I would guess that if you take them in RAW and do the work yourself you will get better results in the 8Mpix range.
