Xperia Z4's two cameras will be back?

Posted by goldenface
- Supports 2K video imaging (2048 x 1080 16000 frames/s)

Is this not very high?

Posted by XperiaJunkie
Would anybody like to explain what is "active pixel color sampling"?

@Goldenface it basically records 2k and 4k footage at a ridiculously high frame rate.

Posted by itsjustJOH
I very highly doubt Sony would jump from 1/2.3", 20.7MP to a 1.5" sensor with only 4MP. Plus that 16000 frame rate (image I think, 4K video with 240 fps) would fry a smartphone, not to mention the higher voltage values. Also, the spec sheet looks fake. That looks more like it's for industrial use.

The removal of the magnetic charging pins is interesting...

the main idea behind it was to quickly connect the phone to the charger, and also a way to securely docking the phone..

now if these rumours are correct regarding getting rid of the usb port flap, then no need for it... and the easiness will move to the Qi charger...

the two problems I find are
1- Qi chargers are more expensive than magnetic cable/dock.
2- The feeling of those who invested ??$ in magnetic cables/docks. but nothing is there about Qi or magnetic for the tablet.

the rest of rumoured spec. are good in case they're true...

the only thing missing is that they mentioned microUSB port, I hoped for Type C

Posted by JohnnyNr.5
Recend rumors said sony is removing the flaps. I hope this doesn't mean that they'll also get rid off the microsd slot. Removable back this time maybe?

Posted by Xajel
^^^
I hope they will not abandon it like the Xperia S...

So I think it's now time to start the 2015, we're only a little over 1.5 months away any way, and the rumours now are only but 2015 devices, not to mention that Z4 series rumours are starting to mature now...

Getting rid of the USB flap does not mean getting rid of all the other flaps as well.

If they want to get rid of the SIM card and microSD flap they can either put both of them under one flap and there would be only one left or go the way of the removable back cover. Unfortunately, a removable back cover does not mean a removable battery as well, which is silly. If you make it removable, why not offer the option the exchange the battery as well?!

Besides, Sony already did this with the Xperia V and Xperia ZR, both are waterproof and have a removable back cover with access to SIM card, microSD and the battery can be easily replaced. They only have two flaps - USB and headset (back then an open headset jack wasn't possible). Samsung does it as well with the S4 Active, S5, S5 mini.

However, both phones were still designed when it was SE (as you can see in the design language and the magnet connectors being used) and I assume SE was more open to make the phones more easily servicable by the user and thus prolong there battery life and overall device life..

Sony however is embracing planned obsolescence (-> sell more phones sooner because they are intentionally made to break earlier, see sealed battery) as it seems and you can't change the battery anymore with current waterproof phones.

So if the battery is broken like with my Z1 after only 14 months, you have the "pleasure" to send it in under warranty repair and wait 14 days instead of buying a new battery for 10€ and swapping it within 1 minute...

Or you could throw it away when the battery is broken again and the warranty is over.

Sorry for the rant. I'm currently facing this issue with my Z1 and I'm furious about it!

Just forked out for Z3 Dual after losing hope on an Ultra.

I guess my wife will be getting a really nice second hand dual SIM handset in March/April.

Posted by qqqw
Not sure how can a 4.81 MP sensor record in 4K (4096 x 2160 = 8.85 MP)...

What is it you are after in March or April?

Posted by JohnnyNr.5
He is speculating on sony releasing an ultra successor at MWC along with the z4. That's what the recent rumor says.

I was re reading the previews sensor data and noticed something different...

the so called Active Pixel Color Sampling...

the description below

APCS
The APCS is a Sony's CMOS image sensor with single pixel color-sampling by moving colour filter on electrified… (...)
It makes all-pixel sampling 3 colours (R, G, B).

What does this mean ?

in normal sensors, there's three sub-pixels for each pixel, these sub-pixels have filters to grap only specific color Red, Green or Blue.
With APCS, each pixel have an electrified filter, which means that the same pixel can be used to have any color.

the thing is, if that sensor still has those sub-pixels, and each has the ability to grap any of those RGB colors, then the effective resolution will be 3 times 4.81MP, which means 14.43MP making it able to handle more than 4K video

The spec. sheet provide some sort of hint
Number of active pixels : 2052 (H) x 2166 (V), 4.44MP

The features list provide another...
Provides High Speed 4K video mode (6144H x 2160V, 240 frames/s)

If you noticed, the Horizontal count in the "Hight Speed 4K video mode" is 6144, while the number of horizontal active pixels is 2052, which means that in High Speed 4K video mode will actually triple the resolution of the active pixels as 2052*3 = 6156.. while in the same time maintaining the Vertical pixel count.

The sensor format is weird also, it's horizontal pixels count is actually less than vertical one, which mean it's not 4:3 or 16:9 as we're used to have, but it's 1:1.0555, this is weird... totally weird. unless we took the Active-Pixel color sampling into account then it will be 2.844:1

My guess, it's a speciality sensor, maybe for scientific applications or just a prototype to have a proof of concept. it's might be a hard for mobile application as it's almost an 1" sensor (23.79mm)

They also think a similar sensor will be used in the Z4 and rated the rumour @ SR4. Anybody who knows about sensors think this will offer noticeably better performance over the current Sony sensor used in the last few flagship devices?

Posted by >>SAMEH
they say it'd introduced between end 2015 and early 2016.. so i think Z4 is far from that.. maybe Z5

Posted by XperiaJunkie
It will be an interesting month or 2 to say the least as we get conflicting rumors regarding spec and number of devices set to be unveiled come MWC. By the way is this sensor a similar tech for what HTC have used in the M7 and M8 ?

Posted by itsjustJOH
SR4 for the sensor, not inside the Z4.

Sony always find things to make their device not be perfect.

Another bit of info regarding the Z4 from my source who has up until now been correct , 148 x 75.5 x 7.9 are the targeted dimensions that Sony want the Z4 to have.

With 5.5" QHD display
Larger than average size camera sensor
3000+ mAh battery
IP certification

I think those dimensions are more than reasonable, not the best for a 5.5" screen but definitely commendable. Anybody else think the same?

Z3 comes at 146 x 72 x 7.3 mm..

I'd say the z3 looks more tempting to me now

I think Huiyi is correct,5.5 QHD for US maket,5.2 1080p for international market.

Posted by amirprog
@XperiaJunkie
Thanks for sharing. keep the info coming.

if true, compared to other 5.5" flags it's at least one of the thinnest, more compact in height then all rivals aside of g3 and more in balance. considering 2 speakers, rumored internals and display size the dimensions are acceptable.

@maloqs
for sony, i hope that info is wrong.

Z4 Compact?
Z4 Ultra?

Z4 5.2' 1080..

realy?

@XperiaJunkie

The dimensions you mentioned actually exceeded my expectation. I thought z4 would be more than 150 mm long and about 9 mm thick. So this info is awesome.

I wish Sony would rename Z4 international version as ZL4 and have it support dual-sim to avoid confusion among customers.

So far, I am very please with the rumours circulating about Sony's flagship phone for 2015. What I am eager to hear is the improvement in camera algorithm of Z-series. I really hope Sony can finally unleash the true potential of the exmor sensors of the Z-series(especially Z2's and Z3's). Also, the UI skin in general.

YES。。。

With all this conflicting information, I can only think of the following.

Sony is spreading out false rumours to sources and to people in order to cause confusion and a sense of the unknown. A sense of mystery and surprise when Sony unveil the Z4 would be nice. Perhaps one of the spec sheets is true or maybe neither is correct. It might be that in the end it is a combination of both. I don't know.

A sensor size larger than normal is what already exists in the Z line. At 1/2.3 the sensor is already bigger than in other phones. Unless Sony believes that 1/2.3 is too small now or since the 1/2.3 sensor is no longer exclusive to Sony, they need to use a bigger sensor to differentiate. Realistically, I am sceptical how big of a sensor can fit into such a thin body, granted the supposed 7.9 thickness is .6mm more than the current Z3, so maybe this is enough to fit a larger sensor in, maybe 1/1.8, or maybe 2/3 but not holding out for it. Panasonic has the CM1 with the 1 inch sensor but it is much larger than any current phone and it is more camera first then phone.

As for the rumours of a CES intro, if the 810 will be ready by CES, it is plausible but then I doubt the 810 will be ready for production by early january in high numbers and introducing a phone at CES and having it ship a full 2 months after is suicide.

Maybe there are really 2 version of the z4. One standard with 1080p and 3gb ram and a premium one with 2k display and 4gb ram.

Z line is already supposed to be premium

Posted by Xajel
I hope it will be 5.5 and QHD not to mention the other spec.s like 4GB ram, 32GB ROM as a minimum

this thread has become nothing but a bullshit ..

This sounds plausible to me.

If Sony is to focus more on high-end premium phones then it wouldn't surprise me if they expanded the Z4 range with more variants. They would need to differentiate each device strongly in order to avoid confusion.

Posted by itsjustJOH
Probably still choosing between prototypes, though I'd like the variant idea.

Posted by Gitaroo
Everything from the z3x rumors sounded amazing and current z4 rumors are just lame as hell, boring 6 month upgrade cycle. Sony should really consider getting serious into phablet in h1 and standard phones in h2. That way the wont be directly compete with Samsung s and note release. They can also differentiate the two 2 flagship a year. Samsung own a huge chunck of the phablet, but when customers shop for new phablet in h1, the newer z3x like phablet that come out will looks more attractive as oppose to a note that came out last quater.

Sony, when will you learn?
variants with different display size and/or different resolution, etc. is a really stupid idea simply because if anyone wants sony flag that costs less, the best deal and always will be is to buy z3 (the previous flag) in half the price of z4. no brainer. what are they thinking? by that you also give the previous flag a really strong competitive market making the brand stronger. this is also why mid range phones are so shit of a deal.

We don't know if that will actually happen. This is all speculation.

Posted by drsoran2
How likely do you think is it that Sony will introduce a waterproof compact Xperia with removable battery?

Would they feel pressured by Samsung since they're offering several waterproof phones with removable battery and the need to match them in this regard?

Posted by XperiaJunkie
Sony have had a small-ish waterproof phone with a removable battery before with the Xperia ZR.
