SONY XPERIA Rumors 2014

So we now knew something about Z4, even though we can't be sure of what we know but at least it's there

Any news about Z4 tablet ? Sony usually will put the same hardware on the tablet, so we can expect Snapdragon 810, 4GB RAM, 32GB internal, etc...
the only mysterious thing now is the display will it be same as Z4 or it will go higher...

Posted by badassmam
I loved my silver Xperia P too, I got it over the S because of the metal body. I really liked the transparent strip but the LEDs were so weak for it to be a notification strip. I'd like to see something like that again.

Posted by Xajel
The only problem I saw with that design is the large gap under the screen, and the part below is almost empty, If the can make it smaller... a large notification bar is always a welcomed design idea, they just need to master how and where it is... Xperia S was such a unique device and I don't think Sony will try to re-introduce the design again, unless they will change it dramatically...

not Z4 ultra?

Posted by Xajel
^^^

There's no news about such a device, no news means we don't know any thing, it might exist and might not.

But from the discussions here a lot of peoples think that If there's really an Ultra, then it will not be announced in the next 2 shows ( Jan. and Feb. ) as if the current rumours are true regarding Sony dropping the 2 flagships per year then Sony will try to distribute the different segments flagships in the year in order to give each device it's own attention and focus, not to mention the continuity of sales along the year so they will have good numbers in each quarter report.

If this expectation is correct then the best timings will be

Q1 : Main flagship, and the main tablet ( like Z4 & Z4 Tablet )
Mid year : Maybe the phablet device ( like Z4 Ultra )
Q3 : Compact flagship and compact tablet ( like Z4 compact & Z4 tablet compact )

We just don't know, it's just speculations...

With the rumors going around that the Z3X has been "cancelled" (or more likely never existed), does that mean we can say goodbye to the dream of an OLED Xperia? Not to mention one using Trimaster technology..

Well Z3 is already announced. I believe Z4 will be released at the next year's IFA event. Z3 Ultra or phablet whatever you wanna call it and Z3 Tablet will be announced in between. I am being the devil's advocate..

Phablet I can take or leave, Snapdragon 810 on the other hand... I want that bad boy.

If it will appear in a Sony handset 5"+ screen before mid-late March 2015 then I will close my eyes and hibernate to getme through.

Somebody please put a realistic XR rating on this.

XR4=Z4= S810,Adreno 430 4GB RAM, 22MP Camera 2/3 Sensor size, Curved Exmor RS Camera Sensor,2K Screen, Android 5.0, Dual Sim version, IP65/68, Omni-Balance design
XR3=5.5 inch screen and slim bezel

Posted by XperiaJunkie
@Ricky D I would probably put it at XR4 just because Sony are ditching the 6 month flagship option so they will want the latest CPU that will last the time till the next update a year or so later. I would also say the same about the Z4 using the new curved sensor as Sony have given up the exclusivity of the 1/2.3" sensor to other brands such as LG meaning they are moving on with newer tech but that is just an educated guess.

I would also expect the Z4 to launch at the start of Q2 2015 as MWC is from 2nd-5th of March which gives about a 3 to 4 week window which is about normal now for a flagship release.

IFA is too late for the Z4, MWC 2015 is when the Z4 should arrive. There will be no Z3 tablet, it should be called the Z4 tablet to go with the same naming convention. IFA should bring the Z4 compact and Z4 tablet compact. This is all assuming Sony is moving to the 1 per year flagship. Any potential phablet might arrive either in between or at IFA.

Hmm does seem rather late for MWC, wonder why it was moved to March and not last week of February.

Ricky D makes a good point, Sony has begun selling the 20,7MP sensor to other brands and LG has developed a module with OIS as well.

http://www.digitalversus.com/[....]hone-camera-sensor-n36322.html

So I am hoping Sony steps up their game and does use the curved sensor and OIS. Would be nice for a late March or early April retail date for the Z4.

On a side note, I must be one of the few pleased to see Sony retain the Omnibalance design. Of course no one wants the exact same design year after year, but I think it's so classy looking, and Sony has done a good job refining it in subtle but noticeable ways. Apple has their own sort of style, so I think it's smart for Sony to have a general sort of design philosophy that's immediately recognizable.

Agreed..Ok I am gonna contradict myself saying this but you are right omnibalance is unique, I can spot a Sony phone anywhere because of it.One of the most beautiful phones out there..but I was wishing for a black phone with golden metal highlights or something along those lines.. dreams dreams..

I'd love for Sony to become the anti-Apple: great designs and high quality, just like Apple, but non-proprietary accessories that work with any Android phone. Phones that make it easy to install an AOSP ROM if that's what the customer wants. I think they're heading this way, and I like it.

Amen to that bro!! +1

Yeap respect. Omnibalance is unique and classy. Not some teenager design language. Classy might be the word.

Not that Leob has anything to do with it, but I am starting to worry about Sony's health as a corporation.. they might need to cut quite a bit of their work force

We've seen those very symptoms before with other hardware companies..

Apple and Google with Samsung are really reshaping the whole industry.

Cutting down may actually be Sony's best bet. What they need is to be profitable. Once they have more recognition, particularly if they continue to release excellent devices like the Z3 series, then they can use that profitability, to slowly get themselves back in the industries they cut themselves free from.

All well and good but if Sony wishes to make a bigger tablet and have it supposedly be geared towards graphics design, as mentioned, I would rather the tablet come with full windows be it 8.1 or the new windows 10. I feel I am alone with wishing a windows tablet from sony rather than a large 12 inch android tablet. I feel nobody buys the 12 inch tablets.

I think there's a lot more people that would be interested in an Android tablet since it's "Android". If it was a Windows tablet, I bet for the price of it you could buy a much more functional laptop.

However, Android isn't still perfect for bigger screens, and the artistic tools on Android are still very limited compared to Windows, which I thunk would be the main target for this screen size.

In addition, I don't think Sony should jump in such niche as off now. I feel it will be too much like the Z Ultra: Nothing too exciting to make people buy it.

Android on tablets sucks, it is nowhere near as good as the iOS experience. A windows based tablet would be able to do a lot more and have more standard applications available right away. As for price, well I am not referring to any higher end core systems, those would be too expensive, atom-on-chip or perhaps if cheap enough the new Core M, 4.5 and 3.5 W. Broadwell Core M is already at 14nm, something qualcomm and samsung can only dream of for now.

As Felimenta97 mentions, jumping into a 12 inch tablet market is probably not a good idea, focus on the 10 and 8 inch markets for now.

This 12" tab sounds like a successor for the VAIO TAP 11 (was on my wishlist).

I believe Xperia is meant just for android devices (with the exception of the X1 and X5).

VAIO was for Windows solutions, but they sold/are selling that brand.

If the device were to be Windows it would leave two possibilities:

  1. They're expanding Xperia to cover all mobile device OSes
  2. They're creating a new brand/range (but why do that when they had VAIO laying dormant?)

I personally think IF this device exists it will be android.

I also think there is a new six and a half incher hiding somewhere in Kaz's inner jacket pocket waiting for it's time in the spotlight.

Posted by u2jewel
I think the 12" tablet people are talking about is the VAIO prototype tablet pc, which is going to be announced/exhibited to the public next week in Osaka's Sony store.

And it is a pc, therefore not android, and this thing is expected to go into production and then to go on sale early next year...

Posted by JohnnyNr.5
The Vaio "Prototype" tablet was announced a few weeks ago with a 12,3" display (2.560 x 1.704) running on an Intel "Haswell-H" Quadcore-SoC.

source: http://vaio.com/magazine/prototype/

But I don't think that the recently rumored 12" tablet is that "Prototype" Windows tablet. With its high-price (>2000 USD) and features its competing with MS's Surface 3. A Galaxy NotePro 12.2 competitor from Sony has to be far more cheaper than its windows running sibling.

Posted by ascariss
It will not be windows, xperia is android. I cannot see Sony expanding the xperia line to have windows unless...they opt for windows phone and windows 10 next year. My only wish was that it was windows since it would be a much better OS for graphic design and so even function.

I seriously hope Sony buys back Vaio. I cannot see myself buying a "vaio" without a sony logo.

I really don't see the point in an Intel Core chip device running Android.. the reason you want to pay the premium for a Core chip is to run full Windows and the vast ecosystem of win32 programs that come with it..

Why not just stick to ARM if you are going to run a relatively simple mobile OS ? Or at least Intel Atom which is much cheaper...

Softbank poaches Sony Xperia creative chief:

http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/0dc[....]l?siteedition=uk#axzz3HC7pzi8m

Softbank has poached a key member of Sony’s Xperia team to join the Japan-based rapidly growing telecommunications group. The latest hiring, of creative director Kichiro Kurozumi, continues billionaire Masayoshi Son’s talent grab but also delivers a blow to Sony which is in the throes of revamping its smartphone strategy.

The electronics and entertainment group, reeling from disappointing emerging market performance and a string of profit warnings, is expected to lower its annual smartphone sales target for the second time when it announces its earnings at the end of the month, a person briefed on Sony’s plans said.

Analysts say the impact of Mr Kurozumi’s departure on Sony’s smartphone strategy is unclear. Even without his exit, some analysts reckon Sony may need to take further steps to fix its smartphone business. Mr Kurozumi, involved in phone development since the days of Sony Ericsson, had been at the forefront of Sony’s push for the Xperia Z launched last year.

Of course not, intel core would be overkill for an android tablet, perhaps atom SOC but I am not sure how good battery life would be there. ARM is still the best for mobile and battery drain, until intel brings 14nm to the world next year perhaps.

So they sticking with the Z3 name for the tablet? is this part of the new one flagship per year idea? I see the thickness increased to 8.6 from 6.4, I hope this is to fit in the new camera module. Battery capacity almost up from 6000mAh.

Assuming these specs are the real deal, then we can expect similar if not identical specs for the Z4.

I am still having a hard time believing the F1.4 lens, it is one full stop from F2.0, a F1.8 would be sufficient if you ask me. If it is the real aperture, it would provide some awesome depth of field shots and way improved low light photos. Also explains why sony is allowing the sale of the sensor to other firms, they have created a module which the other firms will not get or would have a hard time developing?

A large aperture, wider lens and an 8 MP 1/2.33 sensor resulting to a much bigger pixel size, this is what primary cameras should have been!

I would love if Sony makes Vaio/xperia tablet with windows 10 and I hope it will be full fledge PC (like vaio tap 11) but with 8.0 inch display and stylus. I don't mind if it s thicker than tap 11. I just want 8.0 inch windows tablet that can perform as a real PC.

I really miss VAIO. since 2001, VAIOs have been my only brand for notebooks and desktops.

Hmm. Z3 Ultra and Z3 Tablet in CES. Z4 at MWC.
