Finally we started 2014!!!

forgot... Congrats razec for one of the most beautiful thread-start page I've ever seen!

Cheers,
Miki

Good luck razec for 2014.

Well done randomuser for 2013.

I'd like to see the recent return to quality accessories continue into 2014. Specifically I want good active car holder(s) and considered Bluetooth 3.5mm for aux connection to the car stereo with cig charging.

Posted by vivftp
I do wonder if they'll continue with the magnetic charging connector in 2014, or go for more convetional wireless charging options.

Also curious if they'll continue the glass phone approach, for flagships, or go the metallic route.

As always, keeping hope alive for a Vita phone and tablet in 2014

All the best razec forum looks colorful

Let the good times began.

I'm still waiting someone to make car cradle with magnetic charging port. Hoping Sony or any third party will make that.

Randomuser, thanks for a great 2013... Up n onwards sony!

Looking forward to the 2015 rumors thread... (just kidding).

So, there are not any plans to have another serie but Xperia?

Posted by reeflotz
Seems like it. Besides, it is more organized and less confusing if they will stick with Xperia branding on smartphones. While Playstation for gaming, VAIO for laptop, Cyber-Shot for Cameras, Walkman for Audio and Bravia for TV sets. even though the technology should be all across each other if Kaz continues to follow the "one Sony" strategy.

and alpha for DSLR/DSLT camera. I'm waiting to read about the new A7 and A7r compact full frame camera with interchangeable lens. Sony imaging department is so innovative and advance, hoping they will be able to bring some of those to the smartphones.

true, Sony arguably makes the best sensors for many top of the line DSLRs, even the ancient D3x's Sony made sensor is still giving the Canon 1Dx's homebaked 18mp chip a run for its money on many tests especially Dynamic Range and High ISO. the A7 and A7r is expected to bring out the true potential of sony FF chips that were hampered by the then SLT technology. needless to say I'm expecting it to finally outperform D800 and D600 on what matters most

Posted by MyP910
^^ A7 and A7r is rumoured to outperform D800 in terms of IQ. To me, A7 and A7r are the game changing technology. The engineering capability to cram everything in the compact body is remarkable.

I still believe that, with sony engineering capability, they can do wonders in the Xperia camera.

Posted by reeflotz
@MyP910

Yeah, I forgot about that Alpha line of products in their cameras.

With regards to xperias I really do hope Sony focuses more on ironing out the software further. In my opinion their hardware had always been topnotch, only held back by software from it's full potential. Which is why dedicated modders are the best when it comes to fully using Sony's hardware potential.

I remember the days of camera modding during era, I frequent esato back then even when I was not a member here yet.

Posted by mzr7
@reeflotz

Exactly Sony has been fixing things so I guess next in line is the software and I guess maintaining quality on Screens cause my experience with the z and z1 I saw both of them having good angles while others complained about them guess it is a quality control issue but anywho main focus to what to improve this year software be it the playmemories app for the qx10/100 or the android camera drivers they have.

Posted by razec
K750/K800 Cam modding was so popular 5 years ago, I remember alot of great memories with the modding community on both esato and se-nse

however I'm still waiting for camera hackers like the Lumix/EOS Hack group who were responsible for bringing out GH2 and 5DIII's RAW video recording. I do hope Z1 modders can unlock the low level software on the camera so we may have RAW shooting and video at 4K res.

Posted by reeflotz
@mzr7

Yeah, so far they seem to have already fixed the problem with late updates after transferring from SE to Sony mobile, here's hoping that specific issues will now get addressed/improved.

I think the quality issue with Z1 is with some units in the first batch, later supplies should have better screens as was stated earlier since they said there was indeed a difference of quality between different screen suppliers.

Posted by mzr7
Well the z1 got an update today lets see how much it improves the camera *fingers crossed*

Congrats to randomuser (and all of us) for having the biggest Xperia Rumor thread yet!

And nice thread razec! I think this thread will be bigger, but I'll be posting less this year unfortunately.

I'm disappointed that Sony still haven't fixed their display issues and display lottery. I'm not going to upgrade to an Xperia yet, unless the Z1 successor sounds awesome and Sony actually TRIES in North America. For now I will stick to Apple for the near future...

Posted by razec
^^ Wait, are you hinting something? are you saying that the 2014 flagship may have a 3.7MP display?

Posted by Vipera ammodytes
That looks more like a tablet. And what it has to do with SONY? What's ViVO?

some of my own wishlist for sony's next flagships:
1. sapphire front - i know its probably still way too expensive but i'd like to see sony starting to go in that direction.
2. sapphire/aluminum back.
3. if sony decide to keep the glass and shatter film then make them both more resistance to scratches and both with oleophobic coating. some people don't like to use screen films because they don't like the feel of touch and/or they use a front and back case.
4. print the front logo on the glass it self or don't print the front logo at all. its pretty cheap to print the logo on the film.
in terms of protection, shattering and scratches a front and back glass design is really a bad choice. on top of that, personally i don't like a film to cover my phone, especianlly not the screen, i'd like better to feel the glass, so i expect sony to at least to go for aluminum back. that way a shatter film will be more unattractive because even if a filmless phone drops on the front and shatter, there would be less glass pieces spread because only the front will shatter.
in terms of design, i love the all glass design but it doesn't go well with what i wrote above. in the other hand, if one wants true protection a case is needed, but i would love to use a phone without a case, would be awesome. as of these days, using a phone without a case - especially with all glass design is like throwing your money out of the window. but with a front and back case you can feel confident not to use any film, so that's a good compromise.

1. +1
2. +2
3. +3
4. Why not make it glowing like in the case of TX? a small OLED display to project the logo would suffice, and it'd add up to the looks department

Posted by amirprog
@razec
i second your logo solution. good idea!

Posted by -XYZ
I prefer there to be no logos or anything on the front. A pristine black face, can look beautiful, almost organic. Seamless and minimalistic. It would look so sophisticated.

Agree with the glowing logo. BTW, what's the benefit of Sapphire glass and how is it better than Gorilla and Dragontrail glass?

sapphire is a stronger material, unscratchable or said only to be scratchable by diamond and more sensitive to touch.

anyone know if Sony's crystal LED tech is dead ? as I would love to see this on an Xperia smartphone mainly just because it sounds cool and it would be a big leap in screen efficency and clarity. I ain't seen or heard anything about it for months now but from what I recall the display was simply stunning but still in early stages of development but that was back in January 2012. Can anyone shed any light on this.
Here is a couple of videos of Sony showing off a crystal LED tv early last year, enjoy

@XperiaJunckie
looks like sony chose to invest in OLED instead of CLED for entertaiment, at least for the time being:
http://www.techradar.com/us/n[....]n-oled-and-crystal-led-1123759
""We are internally still investigating the opportunity of how to make it. But Crystal LED looks only to be viable in huge screen sizes," Kentaro Matsumoto, product manager at Sony. "It's not easy to manufacture at a consumer price still because we are using one dot for three LEDs so it's expensive technology-wise. So we are still trying to work out what we can use it for, so we're talking medical uses, professional references devices possibly.""
""It's quite tough to work out which technology we're going to go for," Matsumoto told TechRadar. "We have a lot of considerations but we have to decide and choose which one we want. Of course we can utilise both in some way, but this year we wanted to utilise 4K and OLED itself as the panel technology.""

It took me a while to find this but again this is something that could pop up in a future Xperia device. Its from March 2012 and it is a patent application from Sony mobile. Below is a link to XperiaBlog.net which explains the patent and a link to the US patent & trademark office.

A OLED with WhiteMagic tech would solve the color temperature issues of the tech, but Sony engineers knows more than I do, so my idea might not be feasible

Posted by -XYZ
@razec

Biggest problem would be power. As physicists would know, increasing the frequency of light, increases its energy. Red has the lowest energy, green has the median energy and blue the highest energy. All that considered, means that Blue LED sub-pixel consume more energy (and tend to burn out faster) than the other two.

LCD's don't have this problem has they have uniform white LED backlighting (which isn't OLED), each pixel is only a colour filtre with the liquid crystal blocking a certain amount of light from each sub-pixel, depending on what colour is needed.

At least that is my understanding of the situation.

So based off that, having an additional White OLED sub-pixel, which runs at ALL frequencies of the visible spectrum in addition to the pre-existing RGB LED's, will only increase power consumption.
This is of course assuming we're adding a W sub-pixel to an RGB Stripe OLED display (i.e NON-PenTile), where there would be 4 sub-pixels per pixel, as is with the Xperia P. RGBW PenTile Displays already exist with OLED, but they only have 2 sub-pixels per pixel (RG, BW, RG, BW as opposed to just RGBW, RGBW)

This is only a guess based on what I know, so please don't quote me on this. I could be completely wrong here.

^^ Nice insight there mate

Just hoping all future Xperia devices would use the same display tech as the one used by ZU, sans the pencil input

Posted by SON1Q
@sami92a

I don't have any insider info but as an educated guess I'm thinking they put more resources into focusing on the Z1 and bringing it to market earlier and in more regions like the US.
The release date for the international Z1 f has probably moved from late 2013 to early 2014.

I'm guessing it will be released at CES '14 internationally.
This is actually a good thing as they can fix issues that may arise in the early batches of the Japanese Z1 f over the next few months so that the international version doesn't suffer from them.

Did not even click on it, I think the story is simple, Pana is retiring from the TV market, closing and selling plants.

What would they do with an Oled tie up with Sony now...
