Didn't the LG G2 and G3 do this already? I thought they had the best body to screen ratio.

Stop folk just stop, nothing in current market-sphere can't beat this beast
(in term of screen-to-body ratio) Sharp Aquos Xx with the design of EDGEST concept.
The Japanese phone-maker proudly give you class leading 80.5% SBR, dimensions 132 x 70 x 9.9mm
few other specs you might interest, SD800 / 5.2' / IP5X IPX7 / 16.3MP F/1.9 Back camera and 12MP front

unfortunately, exclusive device for Softbank carrier in Japan, (same owner Sprint US).

woow... that is more like it...
Now we need an international version of that Mr.Sharp Edgest..

Unfortunately just again, last int'l model from Sharp was SH930W
very first 5' Full HD smartphone that sold in Nov'12, the model equipped Snapdragon S4 MSM8960
(roughly a month before HTC announced it first Butterfly, but the Taiwanese often claim it as first Full HD)

http://www.gsmarena.com/full_[....]n_sale_in_russia-news-5218.php

which was sold in very limited market and kinda failure to pick up consumer interests
also they cannot stay in fiercely competitive environment in global market,
even constantly release update model per carrier request.

I don't know if they would give another shot, Sharp's overall situation is still not good.

Posted by Ebato
don't expect to see sharp models anywhere but in japan/asia. Impressive screen, but the the design is meh.

Sad news for Sony. Samsung did it again with Note 4, ahead of market competition.

Kinda irrelevant to our topic, I won't say much about it.

Latest two products from Seoul (Alpha and Note 4), bring some positive changes to my book also.

Not much new, looking at the case.

P.S. any volunteer to start a Samsung Rumour next year?

I think something is up with this case for the Z3. If you look at the photo showing the pogo pins and the port cover you will see that the port cover is twice the size of the pogo pins yet the case has the pogo pins and the micro USB port cover the same size. I don't think this is for the Z3 it just doesn't fit the profile of the phone.

Anybody else agree.

Perhaps leaked pics are a bit faked...

Cause I'm thinking, why should be the two flaps same big? On the right side there is the sim and sd slot I think, so a big flap is necessary, but on the left you have only the usb port left, so why should be there a big flap like on the right side? This could be the reason why both holes on the left are same big. just speculation...

However, I'm more excited to see the Z3C than his big bro.

What are the chances the leaked images of the xperia Z3 are from a prototype and not the final product?

Posted by XperiaJunkie
^ Agreed on that the Z3C is definitely the more interesting device out of the 2, also looking forward to the 8" tablet as we know almost nothing about it.

PS I think the image on the left has a slightly larger port flap to house the micro USB port and micro SD slot while the other image has a smaller port cover for the sim card and hard reset button Sony have been adding lately.

@Tizzo that is a possibility I guess, suppose we will have to wait and see lol.

Just a thought but why cant Sony just add phonecalls/SMS and data to the Walkman ZX1 and then re-brand it as an Xperia, it is a beast of an MP3 player and has the S-Master HX digital amplifier and Sony’s DSEE HX which we crave so much for in an Xperia Smartphone, it's just crammed with top end audio tech that just makes me drool.

If it were that simple they would have done it already but just like the current F-series, the ZX1 uses a pretty old cpu, a TI OMAP4, so this would have to be replaced, probably along with the entire circuit board. It would probably be easier to just add the AMP and DSEE to an xperia phone.

I'm in if they do that. 🎧 Xperia

BTW the new iPhone 4.7 has "only" a 1810mAh battery, the iPhone 5.5 gets a 2915mAh...

http://www.phonearena.com/new[....]-carry-an-1810mAh-cell_id59424

Posted by McKinley
So Nexus 6 will have QHD resolution display, S805 processor and Android L.
Galaxy Note 4 will have the same kind of specs but with 5.7 inch display.
iPhone 6 is... an Apple product so it doesn't matter what specs that phone will have.
Sony releases Xperia Z3 with more or less the same specs like its predecessor and the Z3 compact will rival against iPhone 6 4.7.
This doesn't bode well for Sony at all.
Am I just being too negative with my prediction?

@king-james
iphone 5s has the worst battery life when compared to all other flags in talk time, web browsing and video playback (according to gsmarena test) so iphone 6 mini will probably have similiar result and it will be interesting to see if iphone 6 5.5" do any better with qhd that display size...
to stay on topic, z2 is ranked the highest so z3 should outdo it in battery life. its not own use test but its good enough.
@McKinley
Yes, i bit. sony is obviously not expecting to match or surpass iphone 6 sales but to increase their sales slowly but surely and that can be done any time if they do the right things and don't have bad luck with manufacturing issues.

Posted by king-james
@amir

How you can say this is the worst results? It has only a 1560mAh battery!!!! Amazing!!

FYI the T2 Ultra is still the best ranked Sony followed by the Z2...

Z2

My Z Ultra has only this results but I'm very happy. Battery life is just great!

ZIII and ZIIIC should be the most efficient Sony devices.

Don't forget the iPhone 5s only has a 4 inch screen with sub 720p resolution.

Tizzo I know, but you should also note that the others have a twice as large battery at least...

@king-james
I understand, but supposedly the iPhone 6 has a minor battery upgrade to 1810mah whilst increasing the screen to 4.7 inch. I wonder what kind of technology or software development they may have in hiding with regards to battery performance.

Posted by Ricky D
The point about the case port hole being half the size it ought to be can be explained if the flaps on the phone are actually for two holes (like on Z1) and one of them is a hole that isn't often used i.e. SIM card slot.

I seem to remember someone (huiyi?) saying that the port for SIM was moved to the other side and swapped with the microUSB. This makes sense so that the USB and magnetic port are on opposite sides to each other so the dock and usb can both be used simultaneously.

As for battery life and capacity, going back to what huiyi said a few pages back, there should be a new battery tech which explains the efficiency... if all rumours are true.

Pls detail a bit about water-resistance. My youngest child was playing with the Sony typo & she peed on it -no pampers on. I had to take it to a repair-shop to meddle with it & now is working again.
So, as a reference, what phone from Xperia Z line has resistance to piss ?Which i guess is a bit salty than fresh-water & not salty as sea-water.

A bit of pee won't hurt any of the water resistant Z line. Even the original Z has a youtube video with a piss test (yes the guy has his hood blurred out of the bottom of the frame too).

I don't know why he did it over the toilet, it splashes everywhere except IN the bowl.

@king-james
And your point is? maybe you misunderstood, i mean that iphone 5s has the worst battery life out of all other current flags: z2, m8, s5, oopo 7, etc. z ultra is a mid 2013 device and has a gigantic display, not belong to the comparison. i don't see iphone 6 4.7" battery getting any better since the ratio between its display size and battery capacity will stay the same, unless apple does some software optimizations or something. maybe the 5.5" one has better chance in that regard.

Went to sony gallery earlier today in shanghai and found this:

If my rusty chinese is correct, it looks like they are releasing the next qx pretty soon.

Posted by Ricky D
I just saw pictures of this on weibo too.

Some (pretty) girls holding it glass end up and taking self portraits.

Something said about the top part housing the lens and flash and being usable with a tablet. Comes in 4 colours including pink, purple and green. NFC connection. Coming on the 22nd of August.

This guy also says 3 things are coming at IFA. Z3, Z3C and a tablet somewhere between Z Ultra and Z2 Tablet in size. I guess this is the 8 incher everyone is waiting to fill their hands.

20nm die + whatever they've done to iOS 8 in terms of battery usage optimizations. But the new SoC will bring the most in terms of power savings. If you look at Intel's die shrink history you will see that a drop from 28nm to 20nm is quite significant in terms of TDP..

Well if that is the new QX camera it is nice to see they're not just going to build on last years design style, and are trying to improve upon it.

OTOH I'm wondering if there will be a new traditional QX style camera, and that this will be some other variant.

EDIT

BTW, if the new Smartwatch 3 is rumoured to have built-in wireless charging, then doesn't it stand to reason that they'll have that in the Z3 and Z3c too? I mean, if they can fit that tech into such a relatively tiny body, why couldn't they do it in a larger phone?

dat bezel ^^ All those PlayStation phone wieners are simply delusional. Sony would have sold like 10 of such devises, and then cut it like they did with dash and endless other failures.

Posted by vivftp
The only way I can see a PlayStation phone working is with a slider design like the Xperia Play. Sooner or later phone tech will be at the level where they can make one easily powerful enough and with enough battery life without having to significantly compromise on design. When that day comes, I hope they do it.

Posted by northmonkey
The problem Sony have is that with the iPhone 6 and Note 4 coming out the Z3 won't sell very well, especially when it's not really going to be an upgrade over the Z2.

Sony have to do something big with the Z3 and Z4 and have better quality phones with less problems and even better speakers and killer cameras otherwise I fear for their future in the smartphone market.

the battery talk has been going on for 10 years. what are the significant improvements so far?

Posted by Gitaroo
only thing Sony can do or need to do is pull a really really impressive Camera for Z3, seeing that their software team still can't get their act together there really isn't much hope for that lol. It just need to have the best camera for Q4 and that is already the best selling point for Q4, like significantly better than the others. Even if they have the exact same spec or even slightly better than Note 4, it still isn't enough reason for many to choose it over note 4 especially with Samsung marketing and i6. Casual people would care more about the best camera and camera features in the phone more than anything else, especially S801 is more than enough for current OS and 3 gigs ram is still a plenty.

Posted by Xajel
Personally, I don't feel Sony should make a gaming smartphone

instead, they can make a universal accessory that fits all their smartphones, but it includes NFC+bluetooth connectivity so it can be used with any other phone as well ( but might not be able to hold the phone in it )... the accessory might also have built in battery that is able to recharge your phone ( using either a pogo pins for Sony phones or a standard USB for non-Sony phones ), so it won't be useless if you don't want to game with it, and it will be another reason to take it with you... not to mention that having a battery will make it gaming battery life for the phone better...

For Sony related news:

Sony is working on a smaller-sized Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact?

Posted by Xajel
regarding the Sharp craziness...

Any small hit in the corner/edge.. viola you have a broken screen now !!

Posted by king-james
Lil Comparison

Aquos Crystal 131 x 67 x 10 mm
Xperia ZL 131,6 x 69,3 x 9,8 mm

As you can see the ZL has almost the same dimensions and I prefer the design of the ZL. I don't like a monster bezel at the bottom and on top nothing... balanced looking better IMO and also for protection.

I find more interesting the 5.5" X Version. It beats the already small G3 for it's 5,5", impressive!

Aquos Crystal X 139 x 73 x 11 mm
LG G3 146 x 75 x 9 mm

The Z3 Tablet Compact could be the rumored 8 incher... That would mean automatic the next "big" tablet will named Z4 Tablet cause there is no new tablet on the way... Or we will see two tablets at IFA.

To the people who wished for JOLED to bring OLED to Xperia: Japan venture aims to begin mass-producing OLED panels in 2018

I think Sony's in house OLED manufacturing is small and LG does not produce small sized OLED panels as far as I know and AUO's plan has been delayed several times. The only hope is Samsung.

P.S. @ itsjustJOH nice find.

So now its clear, sony's new strategy is:
ifa: main, compact, tablet compact.
mwc: main, phablet, tablet.
i don't see them delaying the next phablet for longer then that and sony alpha rumor source says "early 2015".

Posted by Wishmaster89
They talk only about big OLED displays for tablets and TV's. It's still possible that we'll see 5.2 inch WRGB OLED displays from JDI (they showcased prototype last year).

Posted by amirprog
@Wishmaster89
Not impossible but not likely because the market is shifting for qhd ips 5.5" for main flags unless sony is going to do similar mistake as with choosing non ips panels for z1. also, jdi did not announced any plans for qhd oled displays for smartphones. oled is not ready yet unless sony develops purely their own oled panels as z3x rumors suggest.

Really can't wait for IFA now, Sony will have a big presentation on their hand with up to 4 mobile devices possibly being announced, the Z3, Z3C, Z3 Tablet Compact and the SmartWatch 3. If I'm not mistaken this could be the biggest IFA unveiling Sony has had. The Device I'm looking forward to most is the Z3C and the new Tablet. I just keep thinking what will be the stand-out feature of the phones be though, my guess is wireless charging considering the SmartWatch 3 is rumoured to carry this feature. Only time will till and not long to go till we officially find out.
