Does that mean the back has some sort of touch sensitive area? Or is it a hack on measuring proximity, therefore, registering a 'tap' on the rear camera? Perhaps it employs a separate proximity sensor?

Probably a twist on the double tap to wake feature we see on the Xperia tabs. Double tap using a sensor that recognises a vertical posture of the handset?

^ it should be fairly easy to port over to existing hardware since 8.1 doesn't need to hardware buttons on the front anymore.

Well, I think this is a fake.
Pretty bad weeks for evleaks.

Evleaks deleted the post, says it's a fake. Thank god.

I can't wait to see the new design.
I guess the UI also gets a fresh look (Android L-ish).

You people aren't getting this straight. This is a phone aimed at certain markets where there is a big deal about this, and can actually be used as a strong marketing point. This is the successor to the C, so it's also aimed at China, where they apparently sold really well. And I guess it's aimed at the youth. Thus, complain all you want, no one cares because you aren't the targeted demographic.

Posted by itsjustJOH
^Indeed. The selfie trend is really big right now, no matter how stupid people think it is. This is a niche device, so people should not really expect too much about this. Unless it was marketed like as a flagship device, the "wtf sony" reactions are nonsense.

And Chinese girls are really big on selfies. I see girls literally everyday spending every minute taking selfie after selfie with the same duck pout and puffed out cheeks. It was cute for about 30 seconds.

Posted by Tsepz_GP
The C3 front camera with soft LED makes sense to me, I've had many times in a nightclub where we want to take a group selfie and use the rear camera and that is always hit or miss, while the front camera is just crap.

Some say this is narcissistic but that really depends, I can bet that everyone here has had to take a selfie at some point, if I meet some one new on a night out for example it's very common to want to take a selfie with them and capture that moment, now if you're taking selfies making duck faces and pouting (especially guys) then that is kinda taking it far

Nice move Sony, if promoted properly this can sell bucket loads, it reminds me of the LG Chatterbox that came in when IM was becoming very popular, that phone was one of LG's best moves, it wasn't much but it fed a trend and got people very aware of LG as a serious phone maker.

i am not sad from the idea
i am sad from how it looks in production
i will not repeat words said before
but really it need higher sensor & powerful flash
you wanna make a selfie phone this is amazing idea
then make it correct

Posted by Ricky D
Powerful flashes at arm's length tend to overexpose faces, although this is perhaps adjustable on the software side.

Posted by itsjustJOH
@maia Why oh why would you want a "higher sensor" and a powerful flash for a selfie phone? People in instagram are pretty happy with their 2.2 MP front cam. 5 MP and a "soft" LED flash is generous enough for selfies. Plus you wouldn't want other people pixel peeping the pores on your nose.

Posted by maiaramdan
@itsjustJOH

what i am saying is if all of people in instagram happy with their 2.2 MP as you think so why we see a lot of them take selfies by the rear camera and even a good percent of those take selfies in front of mirrors

another question
will we see this normal not wow front camera on Z3 for example hence the normal htc One M8 already have 5 MP camera on front ???

Posted by itsjustJOH
^People that take pictures in front of a mirror using the rear camera are either trying to show their body or have a sh*tty front cam.

Posted by HxH
Please NO 5MP front camera if it only come from OmniVision, which is only pixel talk but kinda below par.

Sony is camera sensor designer and maker
I hope they would have something up it sleeves to cope with selfie trend especially for flagship.

From what I hear, it will be at about the same time. It is being tested now and will be slightly different from Z3. Just like the T-Mobile Z1s is.

What was the difference between the Z1s and the Z1 exactly...? Apart from Carrier branding...

Z3 is going to be carrier exclusive in the US or they will also launch an unlocked model like the Z1 Compact?

Oh boy !

Not doubting Dacha, but my post is with reference's to Sony's past track record.

We heard the same thing ever since the Z. "Launching in US on multiple carriers, same time as global launch" blah blah blah and every time we know what happens.

The Z2 was supposed to release on ALL US carriers

Seems like Sony can never be serious about the US market and not even make an attempt

It will be a Verizon exclusive. Sony is not able or capable to launch a device for multiple US carriers. Have no clue why. as far as I have heard September is the target date for the Z3 variant for Verizon.

You are right that it has been always at least 6 months behind the global release but it looks like Sony might have done their homework this time. Verizon was supposed to get the Z2 but instead decided to go with Z3 because of all the Z2 delays. Z3 is already being tested by VZ. Almost identical design as Z3.

Posted by vivftp
So what are we expecting at IFA? Z3, Z3 Compact, SmartWatch 3 and new mini tablet?

Posted by MartenR
Same specs and same design? Why are they even releasing it? I guess they have misjudged Z2 demand and are left with a huge number of unused parts in inventory.

Posted by alexander87
any chance on the Z3 to feature BUILT IN wireless charging?

that'd be nice

Posted by maiaramdan
@ Dacha

Verizon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
do you think SONY will make a CDMA

the last CDMA phone, no sorry the only CDMA phone SONY built under SONY MOBILES was the Acro

honestly i was in need so much to CDMA and i was talking with randomuser about that as i was wanting to buy the htc One-M8 but i guess i will wait until the iphone 6 the 4.7" and see

but if SONY made the Z3 or Z3 compact with CDMA i will go to the Z3 of course
but honestly not this optimistic

First image from Sony's curved, eye-mimicking camera sensor surfaces

Good news is that the sensor is fully ready for mass production.

Anyway, if anyone remember what @randomuser have been said earlier about production, I think he was bluff.

CDMA Phone shouldn't hard to work, as chipset and baseband today readily than the past. Look at you QCOM!
Sony would require little bit hard work on tuning, but standard config from Verizon shouldn't be bad any mean.

DACHA meant same design as Z3,, he meant that the Version version of Z3 will be almost the same, the design is same...

but Z3 it self is different than Z2 design wise.. thought same spec. AFAWK

Posted by Ranjith
A Z2 along similar design is . Good for Z2 owners like me but its a bad idea. I hope they delay Z3 by at least 6 months and bring an all new design. The Z2 is good as it is,up there with the competition so an immediate refresh isn't needed.

Posted by Detox
Nothing really new, but good summary from zomgbbqftw:

[...] S805 has been ruled out in favour of bringing S810 in earlier AIUI due to battery life concerns with S805 (the modem isn't integrated properly). Z3 is more like a Z2s, but with a new design allowing it to take the Z3 name. Z4 is where the internal changes come, but the design from Z3 to Z4 will remain the same. This should be a preview of where Sony are heading, refined designs in H2 and refined hardware spec in H1. Also notice that they have aligned all of their H2 hardware with the "3" moniker, T3, C3 and soon Z3. [...]

^Nah I don't trust him that much anymore.

Posted by maiaramdan
honestly it's logic
approximatley all car maker now renew the model every 6 years, and renew the Engines / Gearboxes also every 6 years
but 3 years later after the renewed generation

for example in LEXUS GS, the current L10 4th generation was appeared on 2012 as 2013 model with total new body and total new chassis, but with the same old Engines, in 2015/2016 it will have the Mid life facelift it will be a simple tweaks or major not the main thing, but in this 2015/2016 it will have new generation of Engines

if you can make this example on SONY it fits so much, this will always make the SONY XPERIA Z product always fresh and in the same time, the one that buy for example Z4 will not feel a real major until Z6, and it will be much more better for those whom buy the odd number as the one who buy Z3 will not feel until maybe also Z6 by the next design upgrade and next hardware upgrade, but for SONY it always updating the hardware and the design, it's win-win strategy if they make it correct

Posted by Detox
There is not much not to trust. The story with S805 and it's modem is known, as well as that the real hardware bump will come with the Z4. A change in design is also expected for quite a while now. We'll have to wait and see, if it will be a revolution or just an evolution, but they will surely hold on with it for atleast a year.

Quick question about C3 (I'm not sure if peple would know it in the respective thread). Is it made by a third party, like the original Xperia C? Or is "in-house", like the rest of the devices?

Very nice.. can't wait to see what the mobile phone version can do. On sonyalpharumors it says that the only problem is that its very difficult to design zoom lenses for it, but with phones we don't care about that

So less noise, no softness around the corners, no vignetting... bring it on

Xperia M2 Aqua on the horizon according to Sony’s own website

Successor to Go and Active?

Posted by vivftp
Hmm, I think this Fall is going to be very interesting with Sonys Z3 an Z3c being directly compared to the new iPhone in its 2 sizes. AFAIK no one else other than Sony is going to have 2 flagship-level phones of 2 sizes releasing in the same timeframe, so by default Sony will be the one who are mostly going to be compared to Apple IMO.

I don't mind the lack of a huge spec bump at all, but I do hope Sony has some tricks up its sleeves to let it stand out. Built in wireless charging is a great start, and I have no doubt they'll continue with the waterproofing. I guess it's WAY too soon to think they'll get the new curved sensors in their phones, so that's out. New design could be a big factor, but we don't know much about that yet.

In fact it'll be even more interesting since Sony will likely have the new Smartwatch also going head to head with the iWatch so the comparisons between the two companies will be even more so. Especially with how the respective watches behave with their respective phones. Anyone think this similar release window of products was deliberately done, or just a coincidence?

Posted by Felimenta97
Is better that Sony uses Android Wear on it's next SmartWatch. I don't think it will be able to survive against the competition with it's own OS. Plus, they need to make something REALLY good, with some awesome marketing. The Moto 360 is what EVERYONE wants (including me), plus the "revolutionary" iWatch, so they have that too.

Posted by vivftp
Hmmm, plus I suppose there is the chance of a new Sony mini tablet vs. a new IPad mini too, no? I doubt there will be a new full sized Z3 tablet.

Posted by DexterMoser
I am curious, if they don't use the S805 for Z3, where does this lead us with the Z4?
Guarantied S810??
It would be logical, but you never know....

Posted by supercoolman
I don't want Moto 360. Does that mean Moto failed?

Posted by vivftp
Does anyone have any clue as to why Sony doesn't put IR blasters in their phones? I mean most other big manufacturers do it, Sony has done it, and they continue to put it on their tablets. There's no technological limitations preventing them from doing it. Is that that people really just don't use those functions a lot, or a case of Sony cheaping out?

Anyways, hoping for built-in wireless charging in the Z3 so that it can be further improved in time for the Z4

It was an hyperbole. I never said SW2 failed or SW3 will fail, but with competition, and the current limitation we see with SW2 (only works 100% with Sony devices), it's not going forward.

I think they do that for all their JP models of their flapship, but not international. Same with full seg tv. Their mobile division is way too Japanese centric, they use Japan as a base whenever they release a products, which is dumb and the reason why they will never reach the top in the global market.
