I wonder if this device will be part of the Z range of Xperia smartphones. If you look at the top left of the phone in the first picture you can see what I think are port flaps. Could this be the replacement for the ZR as that was waterproof with a removable battery?

Just watched the video again and can some one correct me if I'm wrong but the front camera has selective auto focus which I've never seen/noticed in a smartphone before could it be a world first ?

Z3 and Z3 Comapct confirmed by Vodafone Germany. There is a contest running for some Vodafone stores from 01.07.2014 – 30.09.2014 where the staff can win something depending on how many points you earned. For Samy phones you get 1 Point and for others 1,5 like HTC One M8, Z2, Z1 Comapct........and Z3 and Z3 Compact. The contest ends on the 30th September, which leads to the conclusion that Z3 and Z3C will be available immediately after presentation at IFA.

I do hope the rumour about Z3/Z3c being released immediately after IFA is true. After the Z2, Sony needs to show they can perform a solid, lightning quick global launch of a mobile. I do hope they give a lot more attention to North America though.

very impressive, especially that it is a very scratch resistance material!
now, just imagine all sapphire glass xperia design. i know shappire glass may be too costly for sony as they struggle in business but at least they need to aim for sapphire glass to all their high end devices. at least aim to apply sapphire in front glass for start in the near future.

I agree that this is a ridiculous premise for a phone, and that it would never sway me to buy one phone over another, but XYZ nailed it here. Selfies are like a pandemic for attention craving middle-schoolers, and that market also happens to 1) be extremely gullible and 2) have disposable income via their parents (who probably don't know enough about tech to bother looking into one phone over another).
I was at a beach a couple months ago (a rocky, terrible beach with nothing to do), and there was a group of middle/high schoolers who literally walked around taking selfies with each other for two hours... TWO HOURS!!
That's who this phone is for.

An otherwise good idea ruined by poor execution or the Sony Way, as I like to call it.
It should have been the same phone but with a 13MP camera on the back and an 8MP camera on the front with AF and a dual LED flash. People take selfies in dark nightclubs more than anywhere else, the weak flash, poor sensor and no AF means it will be useless for it's primary function.
Stupid company with idiotic management. Until they fire the whole management team and the whole product execution team Sony will not succeed. The ideas are right but the execution is dismal."

31 million of those photos are selfies with duck faces !!
so by now you may reliase the market size Sony is targeting with this phone ..

Its a mediocre phone for stupid people. I doubt they have the perception to really care about any of the technical details. probably too busy oogling pictures of themselves. Even if the C3 has a poor flash and poor sensor, its not going to be any worse than competing devices at this stage.

Does that mean the back has some sort of touch sensitive area? Or is it a hack on measuring proximity, therefore, registering a 'tap' on the rear camera? Perhaps it employs a separate proximity sensor?
