To clarify once again, Z3 will use 801 and 1080P screen.

What's the point in releasing a phone with similar spec as its predecessor?
Bigger battery, better camera and slightly different in look, just wont cut it.

I no longer consider Sony when looking for a new phone.

Bigger battery ? Well not really.

Better camera ? Hmmmmmmmmmm. Only by a small margin

Different look ? Absolutely !

So, will the new design language of the Z3 be applied to the rest of the range for 2015?

I like the Omnibalance design and it's responsible for giving the Xperia range a real premium look and feel. I'm intrigued to see what they are going to replace it with.

Posted by Gitaroo
I think someone or maybe sony has mentioned, there will be a new design language omni balance design will also be carry over. Omnibalance just means that every dimension is proportional, thats why we got big bezel on top and bottom of all the z lol, if the top is big the bottom also has to be the same size. Sony must have something else to really think that they can go up against the competitors with old hardware, even though real life performance is probably marginally different. I don't think design is enough to win over anyone. Screen? PRICE?

unfortunatly google only stated Fall release and nothing else

Will Z3 likely ship with Android 5.0 or are we looking at 'update soon after release' scenario?

History tells me the latter is more likely.

I guess I'll be upgrading in 2Q15 when Z4 arrives. Always wanted a Z4, BMW though.

History also tells me Sony is less likely to get 4.4.4 out before anyone else, but I was proven wrong and quite surprised. They hired someone from the dev scene recently, maybe that will speed things up.

Just one guy, to help with AOSP if I remember it right.

Posted by Gitaroo
when all there phones use the same SoC, they can share drivers right. And I thought most dev are just 1 or 2 guys.

Posted by Ricky D
They hired Jerpelea from xda who runs the Free Xperia Project.

His role is, as JOH was alluding to, more to do with helping Sony cooperate better with the enthusiast developer scene than help bring new OS versions to brand new devices faster.

You're right that 4.4.4 is a nice surprise, but it doesn't really answer my question.

EDIT: As if on cue, Jerpelea posted on xda the Sony kernel sources github link. This is the sort of work he is doing for Sony.

Off-topic, but it looks like Jerpelea has renamed from FXP back to Jerpelea and has removed all his signature links to FXP. Perhaps Sony's move to hire him is one more political and they have actually intended and succeeded in stopping the leader of the biggest community dev group.

A small OT,

Sony officially splits its TV business to another company, Sony Visual Products, which will soon start its corporate operations at the beginning of July.

Do we have leaks about the difference of Z2 and Z3?
Announcement date?

Nothing new in spec... only new design...

Even though there's already a new SoC from Qualcomm available after the 801 which is the 805 and it has better clocks + Newer Adreno ( 400 series compared to 300 series in 801 and below )...

But most rumours says that Sony will stick to 801 and will skip 805...

If you want both new design and new spec. then wait for Z4 in 2Q14...
It should have the new 64bit Snappy 810 and the new design... no word about any other spec AFAIK.. but I'm expecting new camera, at least updated sensor...

Japan Display Inc. Begins Preparing for Mass Production of Pixel Eyes for High Resolution Tablets

June 19, 2014 (Tokyo, Japan): Japan Display Inc. (President and CEO: Shuichi Otsuka, JDI), a leading global supplier of small- and medium-sized displays, has completed development of elemental technologies for "Pixel Eyes" LCD module for high resolution tablets and begun preparations for mass production. That will enable "Pixel Eyes" products to be introduced to high resolution tablets featuring, for example, more than 7-inch wide QXGA (1,600 x 2,560 pixels) and 4K2K (3,840 x 2,160 pixels) displays in addition to smartphones with displays in the 5-inch class*1.

"Pixel Eyes" is a product incorporating JDI's original technology that implants the touch sensor functions into display panels. It eliminates the need for the touch panel that has conventionally incorporated as a separate component. This means that the display module will be thinner in size, lighter in weight and higher in transmissivity. It will also open the way not only for a comfortable touch operation experience but also a broad range of user interfaces, including stylus entry.

Could this be integrated into the rumoured mini tablet set to launch at IFA?

seems there is a Xperia Z3 Mini being tested in the wild

Posted by JohnnyNr.5
I hope he means Z3 Compact and not a Mini Z3 with midrange specs

What Does mean tested in the wild

Tested in the wild means that the handset is now being tested in "normal environment" outside the campus/laboratories.

^No picture, link goes to main forum page.

Edit: Fixed, thanks.

So, they trimmed the side bezels and added it to the top and bottom bezels. Sony you funny.

Posted by XperiaJunkie
^ looks like it is just the front panels of both but could be wrong. Hard to tell any changes in the design but the corners do look a bit rounder and the side bezels are nice and slim, would anyone like to have a guess at the screen size of the Z3 Compact possible 4.5" display maybe ?

Wonder if they have removed the front facing speakers. There certainly not visable from those shots.

Unlike Xperia Z2 , Xperia Z3 has both front & back white panel in the choice of the White color , I still though question whether the phone will be made of Glass or Metal ..

The new design doesn't look as compelling as I thought it would be.

Posted by XperiaJunkie
^ could they even be early prototypes ?. The design could change right upto the full announcement. I find it strage that they don't seem to carry over the stereo speakers of the Z2 but again these could be an early design/prototype.

The new design has much similarity with Xperia T3, don't you agree ?!

not exactly what I call NEW design, just same thing but uglier...

I hope so! To be honest, this design really reminds me of an iPhone......

In the leaked wild shots...

The arc was considered ugly.

The Xperia S was considered ugly.

The Xperia T was considered ugly.

The Xperia Z was considered ugly.

All turned out to have amazing designs...

Here we go again...

Posted by amirprog
I'm liking this front design and it is surely a step forward. sony listened to the loud criticism of "big bezels" and shortened the side bezels. good move! the bezels look shorter even then g3's. this means a better phone grip. i almost imagined this exact design after reading the rumors. rumors: "7mm thickness with slim bezels" = in other words predictably meaning small side bezels, big top and bottom bezels which are a must because the design is thin and you need space for the camera sensor, etc. no miracles here. actually this design is a miracle. 7 mm with top of the line internals, quite amazing if you ask me.
to speak against the design, i also imagined the sides to be a bit more curved as the rumor said but i guess the curving are positioned more in the back of the devices like with t3. it wouldn't bother me much thuogh.
bottom line: it's not possible to have the whole cake, there is a price for 7mm profile and small side bezels. anyway, overall a better design then z2 for sure imo. also it's just the front design. by knowing the past, this design is surely final. let's see how the rumored coating (and glass? metal?) back look like.
the stereo speakers are there, they are just positioned at the center of each bezel as the pics reveal...

Doesn't look like Z3!
Leave aside the huge bezels, the screen itself is TOO BIG to be 5.2"
I would rate the screen anywhere between 5.5" to 6.0" .

So which one is Z3 in this pic ?
- IMO the smaller one is Z3( perfectly fits the image of 5.2" screen with much smaller bezels )

According to @Latter21 the person who posted those images originally at Digi-wo, He actually said the left device is Xperia Z3 in white color and on the right is Xperia Z3 Compact ..

In spite of the design it seams like Xperia T3 clone with better specification honestly, for me Sony going crazy about considering thin thickness and ignoring reasonable dimensions specially with the height in top & bottom bazel ..

How does top and bottom bezel affect usability? Wouldn't that mostly be affected by side bezels?

Additionally, the space is needed for internals. Where do you think the dial front firing speakers, or cameras or sensors go? Engineering at a size like this is all about compromise. As technophiles, you should understand this much at the very least.

I won't comment, until I see a proper, non-prototypical devices, which aren't just for testing purposes.

Posted by Felimenta97
They made the size bezels look great. However, they screwed up having to move the rest of the stuff to the top and bottom, creating those huge ass bezels. They kinda kept the same area, just changed where it is bugger. IF that's the base of the final design, you might have lost a consumer, Sony.

And, IMO, it looks awful. If it wasn't for the speaker on the bottom, I would say it was the rumored IPhone 6 with 5.5 inch display. And, for the one who said the Arc, S, T, Z, Z1 looked bad in the leaked images, I disagree. I liked the S, Z and Z1 designs on those leaks. I never liked the Xperia T, and I wasn't here when the Arc was still being leaked...

And. Btw, I know it needs space for camera, sensors, speakers, etc. But the Z2 has all that stuff, a supposely bigger sensor than the Z3, and has much less top/bottom bezels than that, albeit the little bigger side bezels...

Posted by AbhiD999
I just don't get it!
Why can't you guys just leave aside the bezels and rather concentrate on the screen size ?
From where does that screen look like a 5.2" ?
If the earlier leaked specs by sources here were correct than it's not Z3.

Just look at a similarly sized pic of Z2 and compare that with this pic

Posted by JohnnyNr.5
I kinda like the design of the Z3 Compact.

BTW: Because of the contrast between black display and white body the display of the Z3 looks bigger as it really is.

Posted by smclion102
Z3 looks boring seriously Sony what has happened to you, I guess we cant expect anything better from you anymore in design wise following Apple route with same boring design. On the other hand Z3c looks much better.

Posted by goldenface
Slim profile or small bezels top n bottom? This is why the Arc / Xperia T designs worked so well. The XT felt like it was half the size of the Xperia Z.

Posted by ascariss
Hmm I wonder why sony opted to move the speakers on the devices out from the edges, maybe a thickness issue?

The thin bezels will definitely appeal to many people but I feel the thicker bezels on my Z1 are much more stronger when it comes to falls and what not, I'd rather my metallic bezels get scratched and not my screen becoming cracked but each his own.

If the Z3 grows to 5.4 or 5.5, I feel the Z3 compact will be my next phone. Anyways nice to see some leaks, but best to judge once it officially launches.

Posted by nodarsixar
I like Z3 an Z3 Compact :D

Posted by McKinley
I wouldn't mind seeing a reuse of the Xperia Arc design.

Posted by badassmam
Well assuming the white one is the Z3 and I imagine that it'll be waterproof, the front is white so that's awesome....unless it isn't waterproof and something else. I don't like the placement of the sensors on the white one, lots of wasted space meaning a big top bezel. Any ideas on the strip on the bottom bezels, doesn't look nice there.

Just like it was said on I/O...

Anyway, about the Z3 images, I still find it ugly. If it's an Xperia C successor, that's okay for me, because they look alike a lot. No matter what you said (need to move components, super slim device, bla bla bla).

Posted by >>SAMEH
I'd say the white version of the new design doesn't help it to stand out alot.. we have to wait for the full size with different colors

Posted by goldenface
Well the Z range is the flagship range, I'm sure they will want to keep reigning as the premium option so I'd be expecting stainless steel, or some other metal to improve on the Z2's premium look and feel.

Posted by milukugiuniu
The photographer might be intende to make the pictures ugly for some reason.

The real devices are way better.
