When, is the main question.

@Abhi

You can thank our good friend Qualcomm for this. They got cocky and Apple smacked them upside the face with the A7 and Cyclone.

Hehe. . . True!
But still Sony had the choice of S805 and QHD(to compete with upcoming monsters). I still don't understand why they decided to stick with s801.
It's like going back to SE Xperia days. Always behind the competition.
The only way they can save their face now is to name it some Z2 'x' version.

Why it hard to understand, Android newly design Kitkat is taking less hardware resources, mobile cpu is now overpower as well as heat issue remain severe problem. Sony can save a chunky cost of development and maintenance software suite if they really decided to skip SD805.

SD805 is very last generation of 28 nanometers chipset and will not included baseband chip within a silicon, which will need to re-design pcb board to fit it in (of course, extra cost and man-power)

Only small buyer in market that response to greater hardware which now totally overkill with QHD thing, it take more to adjust new graphic icons and layout to fit with resolution as well as wallpapers, you may see it as small thing but these are true hidden cost that need to pay for whole software development.

Buyer tend to focus on overall experiences and features that manufacturers brought into the table not overkill hardware race anymore, this is 2014 not 2012!!

People often forget about thermal constraints. We're dealing with tiny, thin black (or other coloured) boxes, which don't have any ventilation and no heatsink.

A SoC without an integrated baseband for LTE is gonna drain more power and heat up more. Simple stuff.

Just my thoughts for the current (on and off) topics.

Z3 specs were always going to be an incremental increase and therefore a 'disappointment'. When releasing an updated flagship every 6 months it's not easy to be fresh every single time and I refer yet again to history in that every major flagship is followed by an incremental 6 moth update.

The problem Sony has given themselves is that they are naming them with full model numbers (Z1, Z2, Z3 etc) instead of a more obvious incremental numbering (Iphone 4, 4S, 5, 5S). This causes confusion but they can only blame themselves for it after using every letter available in incomprehensible prefixes and suffixes in their earlier android models.

I have faith that Qualcomm have not been sitting on their laurels and getting arrogant or complacent. I'm certain they will have simply diverted resources to the next big thing and the last in the line of the old development is suffering slightly because of it.

I fully expect them to have a mind blowing new chip under close guard ready to market within 18 months. It makes no sense for them to have simply stood still when they've built up loads of money the last few years and just as competitors like Intel are trying to push them.

Anyone with any business sense would push their R&D harder for the next earth shattering chip technology, even if it means sacrificing some of their older roadmaps. The only way a company stagnates so much is if they have total domination, almost nil competition and the market has saturated for a long period of time e.g. Microsoft with Windows, stood still because they were no longer pushed, then when Google and Apple start to push into their domain they're panicking and they end up releasing half baked ill-though out products (Win and panic buying dead horses (Nokia).

Will z3 or z3c come in inbuilt wireless charging?... Or will it be like z2's wireless charging where u have to buy a case?... Will any xperia ever get wireless charging?...

I cant wait for the reveal of the zultra successor. Like many others, it was the lack of flash that stopped me...

Z3 most likely won't support wireless charging. Although you might use that accessory as with Z2.

The Z4 will feature wireless charging without need of external accessory.

Posted by supercoolman
Should we expect Z4 around CES 2015 or later?

Posted by randomuser
MWC as with Z2.

It's likely to sport a 5.5 inch QHD panel.

when are S810 suppose to be available? H2 2015?

Posted by randomuser
S810 will be available Q1 2015. Perfect timing for MWC

Any news on 64 bit android? Guess google hasn't have their show yet after today wwdc

Posted by maiaramdan
for me nice thinking from SONY
let's see all the new info we have with another view
1-the 1H mainly for the chipset and camera with a design facelift(if we can say it)
2-the 2H mainly for all new design with taking care more about new approaches(bezel free for example, a new screen tech., and all other hard ware tech. and software update, and adding processing speed, "may or may not see any update in chipset and camera")
3-the Z4 aka 2015 1H will be near to the design of the Z3 same of what we have in the relation between Z1 & Z2
4-the Z4 approximately 100% will come with the SD810
5-no SD808 we guessed before, and it was a right decision from SONY to stop with SD805 and start R&D in another new tech.

Posted by randomuser
Z3 is still going to be a decent device at least from design perspective. Cramming a 1/2.4" sensor in a body almost as thin as Z Ultra is really praiseworthy indeed

Posted by -XYZ
I wonder if Sony have a custom 1/2.x sensor in the pipeline. Not one that has been lifted fro
from the compact camera lines, but rather an entirely new, custom sensor for mobile.

Posted by winnerzero
Thanks for the info randomuser! Here's hoping the new xperias sell boatloads...

Sorry ? Z1/Z1C/Z2 sensor is a custom sensor for Mobile. It's not used in any compact camera.

And for the future, there are no larger sensors planned but smaller ones to meet the new thin designs

Err....

This IS the device that was teased yesterday.

There won't be any Z Ultra successor.

milukugiuniu, maybe you can confirm the same

@randomuser
The supposedly "leaked z3 metal frame" from digi-wo in the end was thought to be a new ultra based on the sony tease but turned out to be t3 officially...

Hahaha yes this actually uses that Steel frame

From the Whitepaper:

Boooo Sony. Oh well. Perhaps those parts parts that leaked earlier were from this device?
[ This Message was edited by: ascariss on 2014-06-03 09:22 ]

Posted by randomuser
Yep the steel frame belonged to this T3

A very silly name though as it's actually worse than the T2

Posted by vikeviki
Hey I own the T2,its big and sexy ,please dont compare with t3

Posted by RandomCarpet
T3 is too damn big for what it offers

They could have easily made it 142 x 75 x 8 mm instead of 150.7 x 77 x 7 mm, considering it has a smaller 8MPix sensor and just 2500 mAh battery plus the CPU is much weaker than SD 800 / 801, thefore heat emissions would not have been a problem.

Guess it would have looked too premium-ish and Sony did not want that

Look at the LG G3 - it is much more powerful than this T3 and manages to pack a 5.5" screen in just a 146.3 x 74.6 x 8.9 mm body.

Sony / SE used to be much more innovative in terms of external design. That "Omnibalance" design is getting suuuuuuuuper boring after all those iterations and it was a bit boring even in the first place (too safe when compared to the NXT or the Arc design language (in my opinion)). Sadly, because of the success of the original Xperia Z, they are now using it in every single device (with slight "improvements"), effectively replicating what Samsung and Apple are doing.

Hope that for Z3 and Z3c they will finally introduce a completely different design language.

T3 is midrange and lg g3 is high end flagship. 2 different categories

Posted by RandomCarpet
Sony / SE used to make some midrange devices that aren't unnecessary big (with lots of wasted space), just because they are midrange devices. e.g: Xperia P, mini

Not anymore I guess.

back to legit questions:

Will noise canceling tech be continued with the Z3? any info on that?

Even without noise canceling I`ll get Z3C the moment I`ll see it if the rumored specs turned out to be true. It sounds like my perfect phone!

Posted by itsjustJOH
So, the T series is like the "lite" version of the flagships? I kinda like it. See, not everyone can afford the high-end phones and at least Sony is offering beautiful mid-range phones.

Yes noise cancelling tech will continue along with 24bit High res audio support.

Looks to me like the silvered side panel shown by huiyi a couple weeks ago belong to this T3 device.

I hate to self-fellate but I did call at the time that the device was probably round backed/asymmetrical in cross-section.

To me this says that the cross-section of the device is unlikely symmetrical more likely the back has a smaller footprint and the sides taper in (kind of like the Nexus 4) OR the back is curved outwards like some of the cheaper Z series variants.

The T3 in mid-end class has superslim profile at 7mm thickness, big screen plus LTE supports.

This is positive sign for Sony's portfolio, it's stand out design and affordable in same manner.

All I hope is more some invest in cleverly marketing to promote to general consumer.

Posted by king-james
After the legendary T650i with premium feel and diamond look Sony only brings one shit after next shit in T Lineup...

Sony, why couldn't you put this T3 specs in a Arc body and bring Arc ll out. I agree to some here Sony need something new in design. They all look same and almost always same specs.

Which idiot buy this T3? I prefer the smaller Z with full specs and cost cheap now and cheaper than this crap...

Sony got a new name: Bezelking

BTW LG destroying Samsung finally#

I actually think if they price T3 right (€300, $350, £280) it'd be a killer.
I think they should've named it Xperia T2 or M2 Ultra.
btw @insiders How do you become an insider? I'm intrested into becoming one.

Based on the specs, I say it should be priced between the M2 ($325 locally) and T2 ($435). But let's go over the T3 thread for any more discussion.

Posted by >500
Well then, let's back to the rumors since the T3 is no longer, well, a rumor....

OT It's funny how S4 is outselling S5 in UK and how grey color of One sell better than Z2.

The funniest is how the iPhone 5C is no.2 yet is still called a failure.

Good job sony, 4 steps forward and 5 steps back. Unless Z3 is getting release much earlier AND they actually make it in time with no delays then thats fine. If they go with higher clock/bin S801 then it would still be good. S800 to S801 were barely any difference, they better keep the 3 gigs ram.

Posted by Ricky D
Guess it's time to buy a Z Ultra then.

Posted by Wintermute
So will there ever be another large-screened option from Sony, or will it just be the Z_ and the Z_ Compact?

Posted by ascariss
According to another tweet by doomlord, a 7-8 inch tablet will replace the ultra, hopefully IFA.

Posted by -XYZ
The Z Ultra was a highly niche device to begin with, so I'm not surprised its being killed off.

I don't really give a shit if you loved it and you now hate Sony for not releasing a successor, but let's get our facts straight. If a product didn't sell particularly well, there is little to no point wasting R&D budget (especially in Sony's case) on dead end niche products, particularly if they are reliant on economies of scale to keep things affordable at their end.

A 7-8 inch tablet on the other hand, is a hugely vibrant market. You got your Nexus 7 and your iPad mini as obvious points. Also the Note 8.0 and G pad 8.3. All Sony has to do, is make a tablet, enable LTE and give it the ability to make calls. BOOM a Z-ultra successor, which functions better as a proper tablet, rather than being a freak tablet hybrid.

Posted by moogoo
really hope sony pushes hard into the american market this coming year. it's frustrating as a sony fan to read all this tech news from big sites about intel's "paper thin" prototype tablet when the Z2 tablet is thinner by a whole millimeter, yet it's not even mentioned in the articles. Sony needs to increase it's market presence if it has any chance in re-establishing its brand.

now the biggest question for me (sorry off topic a bit..) is if and when sony will sell off their TV division.. i'll definitely need to pick one up before they do!

Posted by Tsepz_GP
The Z Ultra didn't make sense from day 1, I have no idea of what Sony was doing, they could've just created a 5.9inch Note 3 competitor with enterprise focused software along with the any pen/pencil input.
