Weren't they restructuring just 2years ago when they bought Ericsson's stake in the phone division?
Anyway, thanks a lot for sharing your knowledge.

Even before that there were several restructures since 2009 (as far as I remember).

BluRay and the expenses around selling the PC biz seems to be hurting them

http://www.theverge.com/2014/[....]-adjustment-impairment-charges

"Sony is warning shareholders to expect poor financial results for its fiscal year ending March 31, 2014. The electronics giant previously expected to pull in an operating income of 80 billion yen ($782 million) over the financial year, but is today adjusting that figure down to just 26 billion yen ($254 million).

The sharp reduction — the new operating income estimates are 68 percent down from a February forecast — can be attributed to a pair of somewhat unexpected events. Roughly 30 billion yen ($293 million) of the drop is due to "additional expenses" from Sony's exit from the PC business. The company announced it's to sell its PC division to a Japanese investment fund earlier this year."

Really tough for hardware manufacturers out there.. Software seems to be a much easier way to make money these days. Even the troubles with bluray demand are probably partially due to Netflix and Hulu

What money ?

yeah, software always have mega high returns, its what turns MS into what they are today. Things like movies too are good as long as everything they put out are guarantee mega hit like spiderman. Their last 2 mega bomba like white house down and after earth should teach them to invest more carefully. I think they do get it and said they will do more small budget projects like TV such as Breaking Bad and less high investment and high risk projects like After Earth. Seriously who the hell still invest on M Night shyamalan stuffs?! I really hope they won't get rid of their TV division, as triluminos screen hsa just being mature enough and cheap enough to buy. Funny how everyone asked for IPS panels for the phones, their new 2014 TV are all IPS triluminos and they are trash compare to their 2013 models.

I guess next week. They issued a warning today and revised their previous forecast; now expecting 1.3B loss( vs. 1.1). I guess 9.5 million units sold would be a good guess.

That's Sony on the whole, but I believe Sony Mobile is actually one of the profitable divisions. Here's to them shipping more than 11 million smartphones! *cheers*

I'm not sure it's relevant but to break the drought, here's my wishlist for Xperia Z3:
1- UI:
1.1 Keep current Xperia UI an option but also let users choose stock android with Sony's apps like Walkman etc.
1.2 Official ROM support: Let developers officially publish their custom ROMs through Sony (Xperia Lounge) if their ROMs pass Sony's tests.
2- Design:
2.1 Smaller bezels.
2.2 Rounder corners.
3.3 More color options; e.g different aluminium frame and back color like pink frame with black back.
3- Display:
3.1 higher brightness, less reflectance.
4- Other
4.1 Simultaneous charging through magnetic charger, USB charger and wirless charger.
4.2 wide availability.

How do you like my ideas?

Posted by amirprog
@MartenR
Overall i like your ideas. there are also many other things i would like see happen for z3.

Posted by Wintermute
I'd like to see Sony explore a slightly different design with the Z3, but something that is still sleek and angular. If they go with something that has rounded corners and a rounded back like the S5 or M8, I'm going to have to go on a week-long bender to get over it. I trust Sony to come up with something good, though.

I think the thing I'd like to see most on the Z3/Z Ultra 2 (or whatever) is a switch to RGBW OLED displays, assuming that such a product is ready from JDI.

I would love to see Sony's take in the Phonebloks/Project Ara concept, A modular smartphone where we can choose which specific hardware do we go for to fit our needs rather than the one-size-fits-all-specs approach. this could also give 3rd party manufacturers a role to play think for example Sigma producing foveon sensor camera module to fit on the phone's skeleton, that'd be cool

Posted by MartenR
I guess a modular phone would be queit expensive compared with current smartphones unless we'll a breakthrough in production technique. 3D printing seems promising but we are far off I guess.

Eldar Murtazin:New Xperia Tablet 8 inches,ip55/58,design z1&z2,telephone functions(calls,sms,...).Price will be higher than for ipad mini retina

Posted by MartenR
I hope he is right. An 8 inch tablet is really missing in Xperia line-up. It'd be awesome if that'd be Xperia Z2 Ultra.

Posted by mobisekim
He had already tested

Posted by Gitaroo
how are those Xperia Tablet selling? Think someone from UK said Z tablet 2 has been selling great there. Sony probably combine them with their xperia phone in the financial report so we can never really finds out.

Posted by amirprog
Nice. now sony got everything covered for high end devices. flagship in 2 sizes. tablet with phone capabilities in 3 sizes. they just need to start marketing...

And make sure they can release their products as early as a month after announcement without having delay problems.

Posted by amirprog
@itsjustJOH
Totally. z1 was selling in my country 1.5 months after announcement. now z2 is still nowhere to be seen, there are not even preorders yet. i suppose it will start selling only from June here. a pitty, because this is the first time that more and more people actually like sony flagship more then what htc and samsung offer. display and camera got fixed overall, no shatter film, etc...

Posted by Gitaroo
yeah, they need to work on their supply chain issue and marketing. Then world domination, lol j/k

unfortunately I don't know Russian

What else are mentioned in that podcast apart from the 8" tablet?

tablet is good, but its price is high and therefore lower sales

About next flagship design, doomlord from xda just wrote that the design of the next flagship will be entirely new: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=52481651 a design change is a good thing after 1.5 years with omnibalance. i asked him if he can elaborate on that.

So I was going to post this in the Z2 thread but I feel it is better suited to here. I had a rant also about the Z1 and Z2 and the mediocre camera software but screw it.

Review of the Oppo Find 7a, which uses a Sony sensor, 13MP 1/3.06". Apparently the production model will have RAW support, which will be nice but it's not working on the review model. Maybe the next version of android will be packing RAW support and Oppo is waiting for that.

http://www.gsmarena.com/oppo_find_7a-review-1073p8.php

It does long exposures, up to 32 seconds! your move Sony.
http://blog.gsmarena.com/oppo[....]a-slow-shutter-camera-samples/

It is frustrating to see other companies producing better results with Sony's sensor than Sony themselves.

If the Z3 has anything less feature wise, then it will not be worth the upgrade, Sony used to be behind in terms of tech and specs, but the Z2 has caught Sony up and outpaced even others but now the only way to differentiate themselves is not through design or waterproof, it will come down to useful features, especially the abilities of the camera. I'd really like the Z3 to have a better camera, but it probably won't, opting for the QX100 is not an option, it is too slow and too large to be portable. Honestly hope that Sony delivers a better camera experience on the Z3.

Seems a bit far fetched but hey lets wait and see.

@XperiaJunkie
I wonder if he will ever realize that these kind of specs are fake and stop posting all these senseless links.

since 1.6 on x10a. Sony software is hopeless (a fair image for the company as a whole btw), even if they put 51MP camera on the phone, the shitty oppo or iphone will still get better results with 3 times less megapixels

Jokes aside, do we have any information on the next generation of the Ultra, if there will be one?

Posted by XperiaJunkie
All I've heard about the Z Ultra 2 is it will have an arc design with curved glass back. It has been mentioned on this thread a few times.

Posted by Xajel
Digital zoom is good, but I feel that having that idea of attachable lenses using a magnetic ring... or a simple back cover that connects using a second gen. magnetic port and adds extra battery, xenon flash and also an adapter to install lenses...

The second gen. magnetic port should provide two extra functionalities
1- adding extra pins for USB connectivity ( which will be used also to control the extra attached accessories like the xenon flash and optical zoom in the extra lens )
2- the pins will have auto detection for orientation, meaning you will not be forced to attach the charger/USB sync cable without looking for orientation...

You're delusional if you believe that.
A glass Arc is fragile as f**k. Even if it's real, doesn't change that it's ridiculously stupid.

Posted by XperiaJunkie
I never once said I believe that's what the design will be I just re-posted what has already been mentioned in this thread a few times before that's all.

Posted by amirprog
@XperiaJunkie
More accurately, a user named ardian wrote here that the next flagship (not z2 ultra) will have arc with xperia z design. though, he has no record of any previous true info. future will tell how reliable he is.
aside of the info here from milukugiuniu, at least now we know that the design will be entirely new according to doomlord. he is reliable.

yet another new information from other user at the same thread: "I have some info from an insider.. Xperia Z series is likely to end with Z2 it seems... Xperia X is being considered to be the next Xperia flagship.. Also Xperia X series phones will have an entirely new and unique design, very different interface..": http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2725781&page=3
i don't know about you but i'll take that with a grain of salt until someone here can confirm...

Oh dear, I hope that is not true, why would they change flagship naming AGAIN after the S, T, Z changes that we've seen??? They need to pick a damn name and stick with it, keep some consistency and not confuse customers so much.
Just when the Z series is picking up momentum. I actually like the Xperia Z branding, it rolls off tongue easy, and so far Sony has released devices on the bleeding edge of tech in some way under the Z name and adding Ultra and Tablet brands under it was smart, people know what to expect; when it's a Zseries it's a top spec product.

Posted by ascariss
as mentioned in that thread, there was an X1 and X10 already, why go back to that name, don't believe in the name change, sony has invested too much in the Z name, and will stick with it, it's only logical.

Posted by hihihans
It won't be X. Nokia has X with a new UI though.

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Screw it, maybe they should just call it the Xperia One. That's the trend right now isn't it?

Why is everyone under the impression that a glass Arc design would be so fragile? Have you actually seen the Xperia Arc? It's not a drastic curve. It's very slight.

If it was tempered glass then it will be much better, glass thought fragile compared to some other materials, but it can be made strong and resist breakage...

hell my weight scale is made out of tempered glass and it's rated at 200KG... of course that's a 8mm sheet of glass

but really manufacturing wise, a curved glass is hard to make, specially with polished shiny surface... it's like doing a lens !! which will be harder and more expensive as it will require polishing each back glass individually !!

The idea is awesome if implemented correctly, but the problem is with manufacturing costs and supply quantity can stop it...

That looks quite nice. Less bezel at the bottom if I am not mistaken, and 32gb!

Oh man, I hope this shuts some people up about Sony's bezels.

Looks cool! But top bazel should have been even smaller.
