I wanted to answer cu01750 (I do not remember the exact number) saying that he forgot about a major player, Firefox OS, seems you've already done it! Sony already supports Firefox OS... and if their OS grow enough it will get BIG... I love their software so maybe it could be something good and different!
Maybe we'll see some Xperia phones dual-booting Android and Firefox! it would be great

EDIT 1
Already found a Dual Booting Android and Firefox device
http://shop.geeksphone.com/en/3-phones
Seems good!

EDIT 2
So I started searching and browsing and found this
https://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/labs/fxos-simulator/
It's a Firefox OS simulator to use in the Firefox browser... I do not know anout the excistence of this up until now so I'm posting it here for everyone! it is great to get a feel of the OS! really interesting stuff!
Try it out if you are curious about it

Just because I'm Brazilian? Lol

Anyway, I've never been a fan of Pitbull music. He's the one know of stealing other people's songs, isn't it? We have a guy just like that...

But, to be honest, just like the 2010 South Africa theme song, they tried and failed miserably at using the host country's culture on the song. Last year, they used a Latin singer to sing some stuff in Spanish and english, and use some words from some African language. Maybe some instruments, but...

This year, same thing, a Latin guy (c'mon, we are not Latin) singing in Spanish and English, with some Portuguese words in the middle (We speak Portuguese, god damn, haven't Americans learnt that yet?), some instruments + but of style of our songs, but... It doesn't feel like a Brazilian song lol... All in all, I dislike it even more than the Waka Waka one...

Also, is anyone coming to see the World Cup? If anyone is, and want some basic tips about the country, let me know. Will gladly help

I forgot about Firefox OS.. that is indeed another potential competitor.

In order for any of those to have a chance at being successful, we need to get rid of the "APP" model created by the cartel. Its all about the APPS.. if you don't have apps, you don't have a chance. So if we somehow (using html5 or whatever) manage to bypass the current APP model, there will be opportunity for new things to grow.

The other thing is all the services that Google, Apple, and Microsoft offer on top of their platforms.

Apple: siri, maps, iTunes, iCloud, facetime, imessage
Google: google now, maps, gmail, drive, docs, hangouts, g+, youtube, google play
Microsoft: cortana, maps, bing, outlook, office, onedrive, Skype, xbox video+music

Siri, Cortana, and google now are all cloud/search engine powered .. so for any of the upcoming OSs to be able to compete they either need to license the technology from the big 3, or come up with their own.

Well it seems we share a common point here. I too wouldn't say it's easily possible to popularize a new OS for any company let alone a hardware one like Sony. I'm just saying they can make a OS and it will be helpful for them in the future, even if they can't beat apple or google. And we should notice if a hardware becomes popular, OS would get developer support as well. So its not impossible for Sony to do that.

I agree. I think having full control of your own "eco" system is extremely important. That's why I was so mad when Nokia let MS inside and destroy all of their own efforts..

Sony should quietly invest into making their own platform

On 2014-04-13 00:42:19, Arisato wrote:
if someday other software platforms become prevalent, the only differentiator would be hardware and content(music games videos), which Sony has both of them.

Considering that most of the OS development happens in Silicon Valley, the likelihood of that next big OS coming form there is very high. We will have to wait and see, but I find it very hard to believe that anyone can challenge the cartel in the next 5-8 years.

Hardware differentiation is very important amongst the OEMs.. Google really don't care all that much. They know that the OEMs will be fighting amongst each other for market share, which is VERY good for the platforms since they will push one another into more hardware innovation over time. The same thing happened to the PC business in the 90s.. its a win/win for the software provider.

It still amazes me that some people here actually think Sony can push their own OS when a company like Microsoft which is like 100 times more powerful than Sony fails

They aren't really that much more "powerful" ... they do have a very solid revenue stream and piles of cash sitting outside of the US.. so they can afford to keep pouring money into Windows Phone until it takes off, and I think that they are very close now.. another 20 months or so and it should be smooth sailing, especially if they get Sony on board.

But more importantly, they have the necessary tools to make it work. In their core, they are a pure software company..

On 2014-04-13 13:20:07, -XYZ wrote:
Sony doesn't have enough money to make their own competitive OS.
End of discussion.

Its not about the money.. Sony bring in solid numbers and the revenue stream is relatively stable. Its more about infrastructure and the core business model. Its like having BMW compete in the tire business.. yes, they use tires, but their understanding of the tire business would be very poor.

The same is valid for the software companies who are trying to make their own hardware. So far Apple is the only successful company who can produce both the hardware and the software equally well. It took them almost 6 years to figure out how to make a phone, but they kept at it and made it happen..

Google tried with Motorola, but I think all they wanted is the patent portfolio because their own was so weak to begin with. Its pretty obvious that they rather out source the hardware production and branding to an OEM such as LG, Sammy, etc.

Microsoft have been trying to get into the hardware business for years, and one could say that they are in fact a hardware manufacturer as well base don their Xbox sales, but still.. the xbox was never on par with the PlayStation in terms of craftsmanship, power, or packaging in general.

The Surface line is a very good try as well, it has to be said, but still.. very little success.

They had to purchase one of the largest phone manufactures in the world to be able to compete in the mobile/tablet/smartphone race. They can't do it on their own. Post Nokia purchase one could say that they are now a hardware manufacturer, but we all know that they are not.. they just bough it.

I don't know if this situation can be compared to the Ericsson-Sony one.. Personally I don't think Sony would've been able to make it without Ericsson's IP, but that's just my take.

Hopefully Sony will scrap Xperia z3 now when z2 has been so delayed. It would be ridiculous to have a flagship for less than six months

They won't scrap it. They might delay it slightly but the Z2 isn't really so delayed. It's out in Chinese markets and will be out soon in some places. Only one month later than they originally announced. The Z3 coming out doesn't mean sales of the Z2 completely stop, or that the Z2 is suddenly a phone not worth having! They can continue on together.

Posted by HxH
In worst case, because of Z2 delay and most likely sales wouldn't reach the target (some component still left off) this occasion could force Z3 to share some of components with it predecessor.

microSD UHS-II started to show with UHS-3 class of speed... impressive by all means... 260MB\\s read, 240MB\\s write... the first one is made by Toshiba...

Of course you will need new reader ( and devices ) specially that the cards has more pins than todays microSD's

Interesting, the 64GB is actually 50% slower than the 32GB model

Any other model of the same category as Xperia J, but with planned kitkat like Xperia E1?

Thanks for the reply.

The thing about M2 is that it is too big for it screen size. 4.8" but the phone width is 71.1mm. I'd say that its bezel is a bit too thick. Prefer lesser width by way of thinner bezel.

Just for your curiosity (I know you'll like to know this ), Peter Parker uses a cool Sony Vaio Pro in the new Amazing Spider-Man 2 and a Xperia Tipo (I'm not sure, it could be a Xperia Go but it did seem to have the Tipo front bottom). Gwen Stacy uses a white Xperia U. I'll reconfirm this as soon as I re-watch the movie. Anyway, the Vaio was cool and there was a scene in the past where Richard Parker (Peter's father) was using an old Vaio, a small detail that was so cool on screen, they actually thought about this and used a sweet 10 year old Vaio for the scene (most films would use a new Vaio and hope for the viewer to suspend disbelief) I love these small details.

All this makes me sad thinking that Sony sold its Vaio division. Also, while I love the Xperia U (the Tipo, not so much ahah my mother has one), they could try to use more recent smartphones. In some way, the fact that they're using old phones does make the movie realistic in a way that not every kid from NY with a aunt struggling for some money would have a brand new Xperia Z2.

Indeed. The closest to Xperia J you would get in terms of physical design is the Xperia L. Same arc design with a grippy/rubbery matte back. It also has a big bezel for its screen size, but the design makes it much more easier to hold compared to the squarish design of the M2. It would most likely not get a 4.4 update, but overall it's a very good budget mid-range Xperia.

I kind of missed these news, not specially a Xperia device, but a Sony sensor!
24MP, F1.8 aperture and OIS
WTF?

I wonder why there were no rumors about such a sensor?!?
As far as I remember the Z3 was supposed to feature 20MP on a slightly smaller sensor, at least according to some rumors, right?

Posted by ascariss
What is the size of the sensor? 1/2.3? 20mp is already way too much on such a small sensor and adding 4MP more is ridiculous and unnecessary at this moment. The OIS is a nice addition but I feel a 16-18MP sensor would have yielded better quality images.

Posted by DexterMoser
There's no information about the sensor at the moment. I hope it's at least 1/2"

It will be hard to fit the optics for that in such a thin body.. they will have to start going into humps and we all know how much we hate those

Posted by amirprog
There is already an article posted with a document that pretty much confirms that sony is developing a 21MP 1/2.4" camera sensor dedicated for Q4 sony smartphone only: http://appleinsider.com/artic[....]el-horserace-with-2014-iphones
so stop hoping for something that doesn't exist... seems reliable enough to me.
i would like if anyone experienced with camera optics can explain what benefits can this kind of sensor bring over the bigger Z2 sensor. i know that the bigger the sensor - the better the picture quality, less noise, etc. is it always the case?

I wouldn't really mind humps. Design follows function not the other way around. The only thing that bugs me considering the Nokia 808/1020(examples for big humps) is not the hump, it's the lack of high end specs (except camera).
I mean I have the S4 which indeed has a hump and I indeed don't like it because it doesn't lay horizontal on the table, BUT I would use a case anyway which makes the back even. Therefore I don't mind humps.

@jjjajjj:
Yes you're right it was 21MP on a slightly smaller sensor.

But the question remains why would Sony make a 24MP sensor with OIS and f1.8 for an other manufacturer but use "just" a 21MP sensor for its upcoming flagship.

@amirprog:
But that sensor does exist!
These teasers were published by Vivo.

Posted by jjjajjj
maybe the rumor is wrong after all
"for me" it doesn't make sense to go from 20MP (Z1/compact/Z2) to just 21MP ( marketing wise )

Posted by amirprog
@DexterMoser
Yes, you are right, that sensor does exist, and i noticed that already. what i meant to write is that the rumored sensor that is dedicated to the next sony device is the one i linked to. that rumored vivo sensor is not rumored to be in the sony device. plus, notice that the sensors that sony is using for the Z flagships are exclusive to sony. do you understand me now? so vivo sensor is irrelevant to this sony devices rumor thread. i ask the same question as you.
@jjjajjj

The sensor is not a Vivo sensor, it's a Sony sensor.
That's why I posted it.
Does make sense to post news about a newer and presumably better mobile camera sensor manufactered by Sony in the Sony Xperia Rumor thread, doesnt it?

Posted by amirprog
@DexterMoser
Fellow, you're taking my words and distorting them. i KNOW that the rumored vivo sensor is a sony sensor. come on, we're intelligent enough to understand that. didn't i make myself clear enough to you? i would like to think my English writing is clear enough. but no problem, i guess you still don't understand. i try to explain but i failed.
i don't think it should be forbidden to talk here about sony sensors BUT this thread talks about future xperia devices. i reasonably explained myself why i think that vivo sensor (obviously a sony sensor, duh!) won't be included in sony flagships. read again my previous post if you fail to understand. i respect your opinion thuogh.

Its all relative.. too many variables. Sensor technology has come a long way, but at the same time not much has changed.. I know that it sounds contradicting but if you think about it.. its true.

In this case the difference is way too small to have noticeable effect on IQ.. they can compensate with better light capturing methods, optics, and jpeg processing. The SoCs in the new phones have very powerful DSPs which allow for great post processing.. its not 2010 anymore where they needed to do all kinds of crazy hardware modes to get decent PP.

So there are incremental improvements all the time, but you can always spot the difference when they go up in size for the sensor.. look at the GS5, 1520, Z2 .. they are all leaving the 1/3" iPhone 5s behind because they have a larger sensor.

The hump on the S4 is tiny compared to what Nokias ..

I think it can be done much better in terms of how the hump flows into the body.. it can be more seamless, unless they start using it to connect other lenses and filters.. then it would continue to appear out of place.

I doubt that Sony would go that route .. they are probably going to wait for newer sensor tech that doesn't require that much volume to produce better IQ.

Maybe if they go with an Arc-like design for the Z3, they can mask the added thickness at the top of the phone with the thicker part of the arc?

Still chillin' here with the Z Ultra and loving the big screen. I really hope Sony shows some big love to the Ultra series and gives it some proper features.

Maybe if they go with an Arc-like design for the Z3, they can mask the added thickness at the top of the phone with the thicker part of the arc?

Still chillin' here with the Z Ultra and loving the big screen. I really hope Sony shows some big love to the Ultra series and gives it some proper features.

thats part of my speculation, I think they may even be able to put the camera module right under the screen this time to shrink down the top and bottom bezel. The overall size of the phone may not be smaller than Z2, but it can expand the screen size further without making the phone any bigger I think.

Wrong aspect ratio.

And my question is, why Would Sony sell (an apparently larger) 24MPx camera sensor module to some random company and use a smaller 21mpx sensor in their own flagship?

Are we sure the sensor in that phone is a mobile sensor, and not a Cybershot sensor? Might explain why it's so relatively high MP if it's made by Sony.

Thanks for the reply.

The thing about M2 is that it is too big for it screen size. 4.8\" but the phone width is 71.1mm. I'd say that its bezel is a bit too thick. Prefer lesser width by way of thinner bezel.

Thanks you so much for the reply.

How about model of the same generation (this year model) of Xperia E1 but a defendant of Xperia J, that would get (or will come with) Android Kitkat. Preferably with thin bezel.

Thank you in advance.

Does Sony even have a 24MP cybershot sensor? Even if one was developed and sampled to customers, I feel the entire module would be too large to fit inside a thin cellphone. Would make no sense for Sony to develop 21 and 24MP sensors and give the high MP count to customers and keep the 21MP to themselves.

Whatever the truth, it will be interesting to see how Sony will decide to improve the camera on the Z3. Not much was improved hardware wise for the camera on the Z2, unless the optics were changed and comparing the disassembly photos of Z1 and Z2, the module is slightly different but the sensor seems the same and the aperture. So will Sony opt for a larger sensor? More megapixels? larger aperture? Or perhaps as mentioned, smaller sensor and larger megapixel count.

With the Z2 slightly behind schedule in varying markets, I wonder how this will affect the Z3 launch.

Next to E1 is M2. Both are sure to get 4.4.
