sony already made waterproofed usb port for the core, so naturally it should arrive to the whole Z series. i was expecting the Z2 to have it. they should make all the next Z devices with this feature and i wouldn't mind if they ditch the magnetic port for slicker design.

The Core does not have a waterproofed USB port, the core should be inside the smartband, and the smartband will actually works as a cover/flap for the Core making it water resist... I don't know if it could be submerged in water..

A review I was reading last night. I cannot remember other links, but fairly sure that this is not the first device to have coverless usb.

Thx, hard to find for me.

@Xajel
i read sony's site and seen no mention for covering the port. were did you read that? if true then as you said, the question is if it is possible to make usb port waterproof.

advantages for making usb port waterproof (if possible):
1. ease of use - when you think about a waterproof port you think about the average consumer. the average consumer don't see nicely spending another precious amount of money on a docking station. pretty important i'd say.
2. it's a strong statement and unique feature that is breakthrough that sony should lead and make the other manufacturers follow it like they do with waterproofing phone.
3. they can design the exposed port at the bottom like the lightning port of iphone and circle the port with a stripe that will make it look as cool as the headset jack. the docking port already hurts the design by itself.

about ultra, it was discussed many times here, for making it successful (not talking about marketing) they must:
1. make it as second flagship - meaning its got to have better specs then Z2.
2. some cool unique hardware and software features, like the note has. with or without s pen.
3. try to reduce its bezel to be more comfortable to operate and pocket friendly. the people i know who has note 3 carries it in their pants pocket.

great find
I'm still really interested in the smartband! I would love some good quality hands on/review of it!

i watched the whole video after CES ended and i recall him saying "mechanical sealing", that is the reason why i said the port itself is waterproofed in the first place since sony's site and other sites only mention that the core is ip58 certified. no mention for it having to be inside the flap to be protected against water. it's also the reason i expected Z2 to have wp port.

Those are some amazing specs. Its almost too good to be true

Also I don't think it will be named z3. It will be something between z2 and z3(z2s?). Sony made z last year and z2 this year and I guess z3 for next year. Many people keep criticizing the naming schemes but I think it makes sense. Z1 or Zs would not make any difference, Except z1 sounds better than Zs. That's why z1 already has an s version while there are no Zs.

Posted by amirprog
@djin
Considering the latest rumor (if true) and sony's strategy, it will most likely be called Z3 because:
1. a second half flagship is rumored to have arc design, bigger camera sensor, s805/810, etc. more radical changes, so calling it Z2s would be silly, especially after they name Z1 and Z2 and already made silly decition to call Z1 Z1 and not Z2. confusing? i know.
2. Z1>Z2>etc. is another proof.
3. Z1 specs also indicate that as second half flagship - it has more radical upgrades (bigger camera sensor, s800) then Z as opposed to Z1>Z2.

Is this the silence before the storm ?

Posted by Ricky D
Why does every quiet day have to precede a storm?

Sony just announced two devices with currently best available hardware and are releasing to market in the next 2-3 weeks. Why would they spoil that with leaking or announcing storming products right now?

Posted by Xajel
I'm not saying anything, it's just too quite here as usually there's at least some discussions around but these days are total silence...

It's just a proverb I remembered nothing more

Posted by calim
I think most people are very happy with the Z1C and the Z2. Most of us are not yet wondering what's next.

Posted by Ricky D
Understood. I just read what I posted above and if read in the wrong tone it came across as slightly hostile/snappy. Perhaps a well placed smiley would have helped it

The way I see it, the stricter leaks policy leading to the quiet days around here are only negative for for this forum.

No rumours and a sudden hot announcement shocks the market (assuming the device is exciting).
Well-timed leaks/rumours/teasers build anticipation (assuming the device is exciting).

The only losers are those who thrive on the speculation: us.

Sad thing is they're missing out on including some key features from Z2 4.4.2 like TAP TO WAKE (pretty much confirmed by the person testing the FW) -_-, does someone know if for this feature, the touchscreen/digitizer has to be synaptics enabled?

P.S.: talking about ZU here, but my guess is they won't port it to Z1 too

There are hardware requirements for double tap to wake. Not sure if Z Ultra has it.

We should wait till the release of the official ChangeLog! We can never know till the official firmware get released! We still didn't saw the PCRB certification after all! even if after the latest leaks my hopes lowered a bit!
Personally I think that many features will not make it into the update for the older devices... 4K, Timeshift Video, Tap2Wake, Motion Gestures...! But I'll be happy to be wrong!

that'd be awkward, AFAIK this feature was enabled (not by sony) but by some devs on XDA working on AOKP for the Z series, and not a kernel mod, just enabled this from the source code.
this feature is really nice to have, especially on big phones and you also avoid power button wear

For those interested in news related to Xperia suppliers, Japan Display's IPO was yesterday. A rough debut unfortunately. Shares closed down 15%, making it the worst debut of an IPO in Asia Pacific since 2008. Sony sold a large portion of their shares in JDI. The Innovation Network Corporation of Japan retains about 35% ownership.

The IPO or Sony's selloff of ownership is unlikely to have any material change in terms of supply to Xperia phones. Sony takes about 9.4% of JDI sales so while they are a major customer, they are far from the biggest (Apple). It is probably safe to assume that with Xperia's new-found focus on offering outstanding displays, Sony is willing to pay for consistent quality by continuing to purchase quality JDI screens.

There's a number of interesting articles out on JDI right now. I won't post them all, but here are some relevant notes:

------

Some differences between the former rivals—such as varying areas of technical expertise—actually helped make the combined teams stronger. Sony excelled in touch screens, Toshiba in high-pixel technology and Hitachi in building images that don’t change from any viewing angle.

“It was fun to see all the tricks being revealed,” said Yoshiharu Nakajima, a former Sony engineer and senior general manager of the R&D division. Once they grasped each other’s secrets, they tried to install all the best technologies in the display.

One tricky part was installing Sony’s in-cell technology, which integrated touch sensors into the liquid crystal display to make the whole device thinner. That technology was later installed in Apple Inc.’s iPhone 5.

While the company’s first two years have been about how best to unite the three companies’ technology, the next phase for the engineers is creating completely new technologies so Japan Display doesn’t get stuck in price wars over commodity products.

------

Exciting times lie ahead. Here's hoping Sony continues to use the best JDI offers (and no more display lottery).

So The KitKat update is rolling for Xperia Z1, ZU and Z1 compact, followed by Z, Zl, ZR and Tablet Z... it seems to be lacking tons of features... We'll see this is bad anyway! at least Tap2Wake and new camera algorythm!!!

"The next Sony software rollout for Xperia Z Ultra, Xperia Z1 and Xperia Z1 Compact starts right about now*…

We’ve been working to build new Sony experiences on Google’s KitKat release to create some neat / sweet features (if we say so ourselves) – in addition to a few performance tweaks here & there, some of the functionality you can look forward to includes:

Google’s Android 4.4; KitKat as standard – bringing performance & UI optimisation…

We’ve added our tweaked Status Bar and Quick Settings… now more intuitive and customisable (and pretty easy on the eye)… cleaned up to ensure you only get the notifications you really need

If you’ve got a Sony PlayStation 4, you might recognize our new user interface – we’ve added the same sleek launch animation and livewallpaper across the lock and home screens

We’re also uplifting Sony’s entire native app portfolio to the latest versions – bringing tweaked / improved / current experiences for (to name but a few): Messaging, MyXperia, Smart Connect, Small apps, TrackID, TrackID TV, Sony Select, Smart Social Camera and…

Sony’s Media apps: WALKMAN, Album and Movies, with Sony Entertainment Network cloud service integration* – a more converged and full Sony entertainment experience – Sony Entertainment Network & PlayMemories integration with a more intuitive UI, better download speeds, and more!

Our unique custom interface experience: “Xperia Themes”, with downloadable UI packs from Sony Select – skin up to 280 assets across your Xperia smartphone with a variety of styles, and more to follow soon…

Next up, we’ll start rolling Android 4.4 KitKat for Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia Tablet Z – and Xperia ZR – from mid-Q2.

And… we’re also excited to tell you that we’ll make Android 4.4; KitKat available for Xperia T2 Ultra, Xperia E1 and Xperia M2 – we’ll be back with more details; bespoke feature sets and timings as things progress.

*As usual, timing & availability may vary by market & carrier"

http://blogs.sonymobile.com/2[....]ble-boarding-pass-with-vueling

New very useful app for the SmartWatch 2... for the people who are always travelling

Launching the world’s first wearable boarding pass with Vueling

Some *more* exciting news this morning – we’re launching the world’s first wearable boarding pass with Vueling, via SmartWatch 2.

It’s the first ever (yep, ever) “boarding pass” that you can wear… panic stricken at forgetting to print your boarding card? The ungraceful fumble through security juggling bags, items and devices? This new app will make starting your journey that bit more seamless – using a 2D barcode, it puts flight information and boarding passes on your wrist.

This new app from Vueling and Sony will be one of the latest exclusive additions to SmartWatch 2’s 300+ strong application portfolio – it hits the Google Play Store from the end of this month.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Last but not least.... It's PlayStation related... but who cares, I'll put it here...
Sony tonight will launch his VR Headset for the PS4... Project Morpheus... they already have support from the major Software House (Crytek, Epic, Criware, SquareEnix, EA) plus their internal software house (God Bless Them)...
http://blog.eu.playstation.co[....]+%28blog.eu.playstation.com%29
It lloks futuristic and nice (design wise better than Oculus Rift)... it has good specs and will work in tandem with the PSEye, the PSMove and Dualshock 4 to track your movement, plus all the internal sensors... I'm looking forward to it

That's not something new Theme support was introduced with the 4.3 update for Z1, Z, Z Ultra, ZR, SP, T, V, etc.

Hopefully this means better performance from Sony products across the board, including mobile. QA seems to be an issue that has cropped up over time and I hope this move gets rid of those complaints once and for all.

^^^

Very good step for Sony, They're already suffering from this, and this is why they tend to have not so high-end parts coz they can't guarantee the supply... having lower order counts but with higher quantities per each order means the suppliers will love it and give them more priority and lower the price per unit also...

People expecting a much better camera on the Z3 need to tone down their expectations I believe

Same 20.7 MP as Z1/Z2
1/2.4" vs 1/2.3" so very slightly smaller sensor probably to fit in the "Arc" body

1.12um pixel size vs 1.2um on Z1/Z2.

Even though the sensor is slightly smaller IQ should be slightly better than Z2 mainly due to software enhancements and also the benefits of newer hardware technologies.

More than likely same sensor will be on Z4 as well.

Z5 will get the next new sensor.

Interesting...
Can't wait to see how will the combined omnibalance and 'arc' language look like. Hopefully they'll be able to keep the sturdiness and classy look of their current Z1/Z2. They should also remember about stereo speakers

Posted by amirprog
@randomuser
nice to know nonetheless because they constantly improving the same camera since the z1 and would be nice if they substantially improve the quality until Q4.

talking about the z3, i would love to see the following upgrades over z2 or at least some of them:
DISPLAY:.
1. 5.2-5.5 inch QHD IPS LCD.
DESIGN:
1. exposed waterproof mini USB port.
2. thinner bezel.
3. front, back and camera lens sapphire glass with scratch resistance and oleophobic coating and without a film.
4. "self healing" chassis if possible.
5. a different design.
PROCCESSOR:
1. S810.
2. 4GB RAM.
STORAGE:
1. minimum of 32gb internal storage.
CAMERA:
1. substantially better camera software.
2. 3 dimensional OIS.
3. true tone dual LED.
4. the newer thinner xenon flash module if possible.
BATTERY:
1. bigger battery.
OTHER:
1. IR.
2. reliable none swipe fingerprint scanner or tap combination to unlock.
3. the new USB 3.0 standard port.
4. 3 microphones – HD voice.

it can't really get any better then this in 2014.

should sony pursue the arc body?

i think it looks too sexy. it has a somewhat feminine look. the xperia t was like a masculine arc but it looked bulky. will sony want to risk losing the potential male buyers?

i just hope sony refuses to ride on the QHD bandwagon. that does not really make sense. they're better off putting two displays on the phone or more camera lenses a la lytro or that one demoed by that company at MWC.

maybe they can just put a smaller secondary display at the back for the reading of notifications and composition of emails. this display should look like it disappears when not turned on (not to ruin the design).

or they can also attach a thin "keypad mat" at the back coupled with a small amoled display for composing texts. it will be like a case and it can address the complaints of those who are complaining about having a lot of smudges. it will also provide the advantage of being able to compose messages without looking at the display.

also, i hope they can derive some inspiration from sharp on reducing the bezels.

if sharp can, sony should be able to do the same. of course, it should not look like that sharp phone. it's ugly. it only has near-zero bezels to brag. but that phone proves that there's no excuse for not having thinner bezels even in a water-resistant smartphone, because that phone is also IPX7 certified.

@amirprog

Very few of those things u mentioned will actually make it.

CPU- S805 and 3GB RAM

The only major upgrade over the Z2 would be chipset (S805 with Adreno 420) and the newer design. Rest of the things will not see a huge jump. Significant reduction in bezels is also not going to happen unless there is a new technological breakthrough.

Z1 last year was a "bomb" mainly because Sony was behind the competition until the Z. With the Z1 Sony caught up or went past the competition. But now things are not the same and it's only going to be incremental updates here on.

And about the Z2 Ultra, apparently it's going to sport an ever bigger display than its predecessor.
