Indeed. It will be interesting to see if the new HTC One will use s805, what do you think?

I doubt it will use 805. It's still too early for it.

Posted by Jubei1
yeah i have to agree with nikola. HTC will most likely use S801 like everyone else

Expect S805 devices earliest in late spring/early summer. So maybe Z2 Ultra?

I thought the 805 was H2 2014....?

While looking at GS5, i see sony sales rise much more in 2014 then in 2013. Z2 is a more mature device then Z and Z1 and thanks to its IPS display and few other new features it looks much more appealing then the boring S5 with the still ugly design and UI - also samsung users who laughed about sony's bezel got as bigger bezel but one that is so ugly, unlike son'y omnibalance. it doesn't even have s801. samsung lost it a bit, it's a chance for sony to rise up.

s810 maybe in second half: http://www.phonearena.com/new[....]-8-core-Snapdragon-810_id53057

I'm impressed (little bit shocked) that Sony used a newer prosser than samsun
They are really working hard

ZOMG said:
Close to confirmation that the Z2 will be available on multiple US carriers with a "competitive timeframe", whatever that means. The original rumour was VZW, T-Mob and possibly Sprint. AT&T have so far declined. I feel they will change their minds come May.

In Europe, Asia and Canada the Z2 will begin rolling out in the second and third weeks of March. Full availability across all carriers in these places.

Also, now that the Vaio division is closed, more marketing money has been made available. Close to triple what they had for 2013 is being made available for 2014. It's going to be a wild ride guys. 2014 could be the year Xperia breaks out. The line up is there and the early buzz for the Z2 is insanely positive.

Finally, you guys need to see this screen in person. Nothing else even comes close. It is without a doubt the best mobile display currently in production, and the Z2 Tablet screen is also the best tablet screen I have ever seen. Even better than the Air.

No, don't underestimate them, we all know what they're capable to do with mobile

I think that the GS5 is kinda budget version for mass, while premium will come later.

maybe SD805 mid year?

if it ever come true, less than six month upgrade unlike Sony for sure

anyway, this is very precious opportunity for Sony, as the Z2 will hit market first in March.

One thing that surprised me is that the noise cancellation headphones are not included in the box, unless some regions will have them included, but I feel they will not be. Thing is, they are not cheap, although not expensive, I feel if you over noise cancellation on your phone and tablet, why not just bundle the headphones.

I feel this is what was missing on the Z tablet, a keyboard cover

http://www.sonymobile.com/gb/[....]with-tablet-cover-stand-bkc50/

I know someone mentioned there was a 3rd party accessory but this is what stopped me from grabbing the tab z, now that there is a keyboard cover, I feel I might pick up the wifi model in the near term. This is as close to a small table from Sony I feel, there will be no 8 inch tab and anymore tabs from vaio lineup will not be a sony.

There will definately be an updated Galaxy S5 in a few months with S805. Samsung did this with Galaxy S4, a few months after they released Galaxy S4 Advance with Snapdragon 800

But what happens is Samsung usually only focuses on the mainstream flagship, Galaxy S4 announced to get Android 4.4, Galaxy S4 LTE-A? Who knows, maybe never

All the best roms are also for regular S4, nobody develops for the LTE-A version

Posted by DACHA
Those in the US wanting the Z2 will have to wait until July. It will be available for Sprint, Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile. The international version D6503 supports all the US LTE bands and it will work on AT&T and T-Mobie with no issues. I will be importing mine since I don't want to wait for another 5 months.

Z2 is ok, but price is too big. Z1 was cheaper.

Posted by ascariss
I don't think it was that much cheaper here in poland starting price, besides you get better specs, better screen and overall a much more mature phone.

Posted by Gitaroo
about the same price as z1 in canada.

Nope. Here's hoping they'll put it in the next Ultra since that might be my next phone.

Kinda odd they're not putting the pencil input feature on the Z2 phone or tablet though. Wonder what the reason for that was.

rumour says MDR NC31EM may come with Z2 for people who pre-order or purchased on the release day. sony gave away lots of X10 or another headset with Z1. Z2 may come with some surprise as well. not sure about Z3. may depend on what competitions do.

Two notes :
1- It will be included for some regions...

2- the headphones should be cheaper than any other NC headphones... why ? because the Active NC logic is not in the headphone it self, it's in the phone it self... regular NC headphones have noise recording mic(s) + NC logic + battery to power it... Sony's solution is to move the logic to the phone instead this will also remove the battery leaving only the additional noise cancelling mic(s)... and these mic(s) are the reason of different headphone.. these additional mic(s) does not cost that much extra...

So why not using the mic(s) that is already in the phone so any headphone will be supported ? no as this will require you to have the phone always out of your pocket and duo to different location of the phone and headphones the NC will not be ideal...

just to hint, the solution is good for wired headphones only.. BT headphones will be hard to support such feature as it will require additional stream from the headphones to the phone and the BT standard won't be able to have these additional streams... for BT headsets.. you might want to look for ones with it's own active NC solution...

MHL 3.0 announced also...

Support for 4K video + 10W charging ( 5V @ 2A )

what is related to Sony ?

The demo was done using Xperia Z1 + Sony 4K TV, this also means that is might be just matter of software update + newer cable using the same good microUSB 2.0 standard ( no need for the larger microUSB 3.0 )

I see the microUSB 3.0 ugly and large for mobile phones... I hope Sony will wait till the USB consortium finishes the newer standard which will look similar to microUSB 2.0 but can be flipped without any problem ( like Apple Lightening ) and also have USB 3.0 like speed

The MDR-NC31s have been used on most of the current walkmans with noise cancellation, F-series, S-series and E-series. Granted they are not the top of the line NC headphones but they work quite good.

I have the MDR-NWBT20N which is a bluetooth NC headphone set and it works just as good as my wired solution on my E series.

How can the same company win both CES AND MWC? Arguably IFA too...

Anyway, what I was saying all along about the Z setting up subsequent flagships to sell big, and for them to be increasingly ahead of the competition, turned out correct. Similarly, how Samsung rode on its reputation for the s2, and that the s4 would be the last phone with increasing sales, seems to be true.

Every year I'm genuinely curious about Samsung going all out. Every year I'm more and more disappointed.

I almost feel sorry for the competition at IFA...

Yes I got your point, but as I told you before that Sony was working on e-ink back phone from the previous year

Don't know what's happened?

Honestly I will choose this e-ink back phone over any phone in the market now

Hey guys, can someone explain the Live Color LED? And is the Triluminos display for mobile a software enhancement? Because Triluminos on their TV means they use QD tech.

I think, if Apple play their cards right, they could be the big winner of this year´s announcements.
Or is it just the new trend to merely offer small upgrades?
I mean I would´t know one reason why to trade in my Z1 for the Z2? A little faster? C´mon.......

There´s is no more new form factors, just design monotony, no new innovations. Seems the mobile market is running out of its Mojo.
Time to find me a new hobby

Posted by -XYZ
The market has matured. Aside from offering larger screens, there isn't much Apple can do to markedly improve on the 5s.

All upgrades will be nominal.

Posted by motvikt
So moving on to new rumours. I guess the next announcement will be Xperia G then? Maybe they will do a stealth announcement like they did with the Xperia T2 Ultra

Posted by FMW300
Some ppl think that S5 has S800, but it's the S801. I wasn't too sure myself, but Qualcomm mentioned it in a tweet, so now I know for sure; Z2 and S5 both carry the same chip, but clocked differently. To me, the S5 is no match for Z2 anyway, with the Z2 having stereo speakers, 3gb RAM, better design (& camera I hope), shutter button & bigger battery.

Edit: GSMarena clears it up.
The S801 in S5 is slightly better than Z2, only slightly.

Just wondering if anyone has any information about the eventual z ultra successor? I was seriously considering getting the ultra but got swayed by the z1 camera...if sony can pull off the same specs as z2 in a z ultra body I am sold...I know its a huge screen but hardly anyone actually uses a smartphone for calling these days, plus it puts my sbh50 bluetooth headset to good use...

Based on publicly available info, Live Colour LED appears to be a software enhancement powered by a dedicated chip. It may or may not include changes to the actual IPS panel. While Triluminous primarily increases the colour gamut, LC LED is designed to increase vividness and brightness. According to Sony:

"Live Colour LED is a brand new technology integrated only into Sony devices, giving you the world’s deepest and most intense colours on a smartphone or tablet display. This new innovation combines red and green phosphor with blue LEDs and customised colour filters to produce a brighter and more uniform light. Capturing true colours without the risk of oversaturation."

Sonymobile.com claim it is integrated only on Mobile displays. This may be misleading though. The technology is new to Sony Mobile, but it already exists in similar form on certain BRAVIA TVs. The reason I assume it is primarily a software enhancement is that on BRAVIA, Live Color is:

"Powered by an image processor using an algorithm specially developed by Sony, Live Colour™ is able to reproduce incredibly vivid colours on screen. With four user-adjustable settings available, you can choose just how vivid you want your images to be."

It is possible that LC LED is a different technology for Xperia than BRAVIA, but why Sony would then brand it under the same name is elusive.

As for Triluminos, the answer is unclear. On BRAVIA it is a hardware enhancement powered by QD technology combined with the X-reality image processor to avoid over-saturation. On Xperia screens, there is debate over whether it is hardware or just software based. There was discussion last year when Triluminos debuted on the XZ1, with some posters claiming it was just a software enhancement. Perhaps more technically minded Esato posters can clarify.

Note that in a brief interview with Mobile Bravia engineers, they noted porting the technology from Bravia to Xperia:

"...involved a back-and-forth process of hardware modification and software parameter change; lots of meticulous planning and work.... In order to introduce super-res technology processing for video, for the first time, we implemented the algorithm on GPU, not CPU."

In theory, if you combine both Triluminos and Live Colour LED with a good panel, you should get an amazing display.

Just noticed something interesting. On Sony's website, the tablet is referred to as a gaming tablet repeatedly. Didn't say this for the original tablet z. Expect a pro tablet this year guys.

Triluminos on Xperia Z1 and Z Ultra is just a software thing, Sony did colour calibration to trick our eyes (a little unusual adjustment). I really eager to see if Live Colour LED will live up expectation this year.

Posted by -XYZ
Sony need to work on their autofocus system...seriously. Numerous complaints from Z1 owners, that it takes ages to focus and hunts around for a while. Similar problems from me and my Z1 compact as well...it's really annoying. I hope Sony patch this with future updates, because aside from the awful noise suppression which murders all detail, it's the biggest problem
.

Is there any technical obstacle that Sony can't make a 32GB mobile with 3GB RAM ?

Tablet Z2 also has stereo front facing speakers. Don't change THAT much from the Tab Z, IMO, in terms of hands placement, but...

Because there's no Z2 Tablet thread yet:

Sony’s S-Force® Surround technology gives you a powerful surround sound effect without the need for multiple stand-alone speakers. For maximum effect, this gaming tablet has four 3D surround sound speakers instead of two. And the speakers are carefully placed so that your hands don’t block the sound when holding your tablet.

I've done a little more digging on the XZ2 and Tablet Z2's use of Sony's new display technology branded as Live Colour LED. Since displays have been a past criticism of Xperia phones, this warranted some curiosity. As always, I stand willing to be corrected by Esato's more informed posters.

Live Colour LED for Xperia appears to be reliant on technology called Phosphor-based LEDs. Phosphor LED technology is not new; in fact, it's been around for over a decade. However, Sony claim this is the first time a tablet has featured a phosphor-based LED display. This may be more than just a software solution (as currently employed in BRAVIA TVs).

Phosphor is a luminescent material that absorbs wavelengths of light and reemits the photons at different wavelengths. Most white LEDs are in fact blue LEDs with a phosphor coating. By coating LEDs with phosphors of different colours, you can emit a range of wavelengths. If several phosphor layers of distinct colours are applied, the emitted spectrum is broadened, raising the color rendering index (CRI) value of the LED as a result.

Sony uses red and green coated phosphors with the blue LEDs in the new XZ2 and Tablet Z2 to produce a wide CRI. They then layer a colour filter - perhaps based on the Triluminos software - to fine tune and avoid over-saturation.

The tricky part is this: phosphor-based LEDs produce excellent colour rendering but tend to have lower luminous efficacy due to the Stokes shift. Basically, they drain more power - not a tradeoff you want in a mobile device. Sony may have solved this problem, but how is a mystery. By combining multiple phosphors with different wavelengths from the original source, the luminous emittance can appear "brighter" due to the human eye's varying sensitivity to different wavelengths, but how you would incorporate this into a large panel that must display a wide range of colours is beyond me.

Reports out of MWC state the Tablet Z2 has a noticeably brighter and more vibrant display compared to the old Tablet Z, with some sites even reporting colour over-saturation. The question is what strain this places on battery life, if any. Note Sony increased the battery size for the XZ2, but the tablet remains the same. This may be offset by a more efficient S801 processor and other tweaks, but we'll have to wait for proper tests.

Here's where it gets interesting:

It's plausible that BRAVIA TVs employ hardware-based Triluminos technology using QDs, coupled with software-based Live Colour enhancements from a dedicated processing chip. For Xperia, Sony may be employing the opposite: software-based Triluminos colour enhancer, coupled with hardware-based Live Colour Phosphor LEDs.

This is just personal speculation though. It may be this is not even native to Sony, but actually developed by their panel suppliers such as JDI. Sony may just be the first to get their hands on it and brand it. Regardless, the days where Xperia displays were a point of contention among reviewers are hopefully gone.

Posted by itsjustJOH
^So it's QD but using phosphor?

Posted by goldenface
The Xperia Z Ultra was also a noticeable step up displaywise, might this also have benefited from this tech?

Posted by amirprog
@bambarah
Nothing technical. i think that most consumers don't seem to care much about 32 gb as standard because there is micro SD slot in some phones so they are willing to compromise and not criticize much the manufacturers about it so the manufacturers put this upgrade at the bottom of their upgrade list. i guess it also a way for them to save a bit of money.

The new tablet z sounds amazing, but too bad, I am done with arm based tablet since you can get a 128 GB surface pro 1 for 530 CAd with student pricing in Canada. Its bulky and heavy but it does runs true windows software and stream every format of HD video flawlessly which is what I really need.
