Let's hope there will be some leaks very soon... so we will stop this discussion about money and sales...
I do not like them... especially because they are growing, and even if it saddens me to see that Sony have to sell some of its division to stay on track, this is what they need to do... focusing on the Profitable division is the only way to return to profit.... Xperia's, Movie, Camera, Walkman (at least for headphones, I see so many Sony headphones around here in italy! Sony or Beats)... the only brand they should try to revive, beacause it's not too late, are the Bravia! they have such an amazing quality with their screen
My bad I forgot the PlayStation brand!!! That IS STRONG

Personally, I have no interested in sales volume that much,
only care how much profit the business can do, and how much it average selling price.

Even though Sony Mobile's division still making loss, but performance is improve
They have better sales and less in making loss compare to previous quarter.

For LG, You should see how it perform they sales 2.5M units more than 10.7 from Sony
but hey they're making loss for mobile division as well, due to cost of promotion and marketing campaign.
As a whole they're also making loss due to taxes, and that make me don't understand what you crying for?

@nikola1970
did not look it at first (I am a straight looker and Z1 is fine by me) and so I asked - angles are better and colours as well

Also doesn't the Mobile Division also include the Vaio loss?

@stook @racingdriver

You guys got any info about the tablets?

No indications of a successor to "Castor" at this point.

Got to hold briefly the new D650x prototype

Its the same width (but with bigger screen) a bit longer (ca 2mm) and bit thinner. Bit lighter (ca 163g?). Otherwise it looks almost the same as Z1 with less bezel

Has stereo sound (seems like speakers on top/bottom) and a LOT nicer sound than Z1 and one hifi option - Hi-Res Audio via USB - you can connect phone to DAC

Android on proto is 4.4.2 and sony SW 17.x (Z1 is 14.x)

Sony SW had some nice new features:
Quick settings are now hidden at first (only notifications) and you can choose either quick settings or notifications.
When you hold the wifi on/off button in quick settings you get the wifi settings - I was waiting for this shortcut
Motion: you can answer the phone by lifting the phone (ala touchwiz) or silence th ringer if you turn it upside down (ala htc)
Smart backlight - keeps screen on when you looking it

Status bar icons are choosable (battery gsp wifi alarm etc)

You can choose between home pages Xperia (normal) or easy - with some big icons (this is kitkat function probably?)

Has the glove mode as Z1 compact and the same tap to wake up as on Z tablet

Camera seems the be same, but it has 4K video recording

Some questions
Stereo Sound: Is is Louder than Z1? compared to HTC One? Is it clean or metallic?
Shortcut: Is it the only one you have found? are there others in the quick settings?
Status bar icon: with "they are chosable" you intend that you can select which one to display or that you can choose which style/shape the different cinos have?
Glove Mode: Has it those "Hoovering" options you could find in the S4 and in the Xperia Sola?
Status Led: I saw they hid it in the speaker... is it bright? Is it easy to notice?
I imagine you just had a brief encounter with the prototype but I hope you'll have some answers

Thanks for the attention (I hope)

It's the upcoming 10.1" tablet. SGP5X1 are 16 GB models, SGP5X2 is 32 GB.

It will be rather silly if Sony decides to sacrifice battery capacity for thin design which is not needed as the current tab z is already thin enough. Thinner is not the way to go, since any thinner will automatically exclude any chance of a flash or even an upgraded camera. I know it is asking too much for the Z1 camera in the new tab but the tablet is supposed to be the high end and why not also have a nice camera on it?

I'd really like to see better accessory support from Sony, as in a real keyboard cover like the surface has, the only tab had it, but it was so so from what I used.

Also thinner bezel because the current one is too large even for a 10 inch device.

A built in pen with wacom support is probably asking for too much, so I don't expect it.

anybody else sad sony decided to sell off their vaio division? -- i sure am.

hopefully, that means they can focus more on the mobile division as mobile and gaming are probably gonna be their biggest money makers. rumor is TV division might be the next one to go.. which would be devastating for me, personally.

haven't been keeping up with this thread too much lately as i don't want to be too tempted to upgrade from my Z1 (haha).. but it sounds like the next iteration isn't too much of an upgrade, so that makes me feel a bit better

What I hope for in the next tablet is 1080p screen (same as before), smaller bezels like ipad air, s800 soc and 399$ price. I think the biggest problem with tablet Z right now is the price, they cant sell for the same price as ipad air. It would have been an even bigger sucess if they priced it right

The Tab Z was 100 dollars cheaper than the iPad 4 (or 3, can't remember) , the one on market when XTZ was launched. I think it's a very good price for what you get. The actual model should have a 100 dollars price drop once the new one is announced.

Regarding the next one, I think they should make it even thinner and lighter, just like rumours says. I have nothing to complain about the battery duration of mine. With a S800/805 processor, the battery drain by the SoC should decrease over the S4 Pro. The screen could have a bigger resolution (2k, maybe?) with Triluminos and X Reality. The panel type can be the very same. It is simply perfect (even at extreme angles, no color loss, and minimum brightness is awesome).

The size is good for me. It's not big, IMO. They could work in the front a bit more. The space between the glass and the border is with a bit of dirt that I can't remove (at least with what I tried until now). Just like the Z1/Ultra/Compact, aluminium borders and open headphone jack. Magnetic charging, just like the others. However, the flaps could be a bit sturdier. I feel mine are going to break quite easily.

Regarding the camera, it doesn't need such a huge spec bump. I mean, why a super camera in a tablet? Or flash? I don't see the need for that. After all, it's a tablet. I don't want to see people with a XTZ1 (or whatever they call) to record things (even though I visit believe it will take quite some time to see one in person, as they will cost all your organs to buy one in Brazil). Someone said the actual gen has a SP or P camera. I seriously doubt it... Maybe the next gen could have the S camera? It's pretty good for most stuff. The front facing one could be better, though? Don't know if it's possible, but 5 Mp 2k?

Posted by Away
Why 1080p over 2560x1600? Some languages require a higher ppi to read properly. Text benefits a lot.

And s800 is getting old. If the next tablet gets s800, in terms of hardware compared to the competition, it will be just like last year.

I think it's more than thin enough, but if they don't sacrifice the battery and can get a slightly larger one or at least the same one in, then thinner is better as long as, and more importantly, it's lighter.

An LED on the new Tablet Z would be welcome, not for the flash capabilities (who uses their tablet for serious photos?!) but for the convenience of using it as a torch.

I'd also like to see a vibrator in the tablet for feedback in games and notifications. I don't see the fuss about a wacom pen, the Z Ultra 'any pencil/pen' tech is good enough.

The problem they will face in the market is that, if they include a stylus, they will be instantly compared (unfavourably) to the Galaxy Note series. The comparison will be unfavourable because of the amount of specialised software Samsung has for their pen, Sony simply hasn't had the time to build such a rich collection of apps.

Higher-res is a bit irrelevant for me. I'm happy with the current screen as it is simply awesome, but that doesn't mean better isn't better, if it's of little detriment to cost, battery and size, bring it on.

Any of the new tablets will run win 8?
Also what about the Win Phone rumors from some time ago, is it now dead with the vaio line?

i would love to see the Q4 flagship and eventually all xperia high end devices with all sapphire front and back glass (and of course without the shatter film), or at least the front glass. it would be awesome. this is one of my top wishes. though, it may be still too expensive to make in 2014. apple is clearly going in that direction: http://pocketnow.com/2014/02/06/apple-secured-sapphire-displays
and watch this latest sapphire damage test video: http://www.phonearena.com/new[....]n-your-next-smartphone_id52254
at least, i hope sony start implementing sapphire glass for the next smartwatch.

You guys can say what you want, but to be truly successful in the smartphone space in the long term, android isn't the way.

The smartphone division will become the next Vaio in 10 years, what's stopping it? They'll have the best design, even hardware, UI - but the android space will be too crowded. Thankfully, Google has failed to commoditize the smartphone market - the cause being very annoyed partners. But they'll try again and they might be more successful next time.

The Vita has been given new life. But will it get a successor?

A well developed mobileb OS and a strong partnership with a chip manufacturer is the way forward. They need you build an ecosystem, right? Then why not a 1080p 8" gaming tablet to kick things off? An efficient OS which gets the basics right, but isn't as walled off as iOS. And great support.

With AMD looking to enter the ARM mobile market eventually, if they do a Nvidia with their mini GPUs, we could be looking at a scalable OS with scalable hardware. TVs, games consoles, mobiles, walkmans, even some cameras. All should be able to run it.

It shouldn't take massive funds - they could start slow. Restructuring is nearly complete, why not have a small but amazing team work on it?

We've heard something has been in development for months now, but 2014 has to be the year, many other newcomers are entering the scene.

BRAVIA business is the next to go. Yesterday in the earnings release conference Kaz mentioned spinning off the TV division (and other divisions) is the "right solution".

Samsung has been failing for the past 3 years at pushing a whole bunch of mobile OSs. Sony may succeed with VITA or PS, but I wonder if they will do it. PS is a good and well known OS with its mature market of games and apps, but scaling it all over the place can be a challenge.

And just why is Android not the way forward? What problem is there with Android? It seems to be doing well for Samsung. And more importantly, what is the alternative? Hint: it's definitely not the doomed Windows Phone, and Apple will never allow other manufacturers to license iOS. Again, what is the alternative?

Please don't talk about developing another OS. Number 1, we don't need another one, Android is getting incredibly capable and polished. Number 2, even Samsung with their unlimited resources, in partnership with Intel, has not been able to get a competing OS off the ground. There is no way Sony could manage this in their current condition. Plus, there is an economic phenomenon where people prefer imperfect competition. Coke and Pepsi sell more soft drinks than anyone else. Intel and AMD pretty much split the CPU market between them. Android and iOS make up 90+% of the smartphone market. It's just a fact that once you have a couple of good, established competitors in a market with high barriers to entry, the market usually just will not support another competitor, regardless of how good the product is. Microsoft is finding this out the hard way with Windows Phone and Surface. The products, by most accounts, are good, especially the Nokia phones, and God knows they've poured billions of dollars into attempts to increase their market share, but the public just ain't buyin' it. Good products and lots of marketing. What's the problem? They got there too late. Android and iOS had already split the kingdom and were ensconced on their separate thrones, and everyone had picked a side. For whatever reason, there's just not room for three big players.

Maybe it's the E1 and E1-dual?

A bit sad VAIO is being sold off though, still love my old VAIO Z. It was marvelous, before ultrabooks came out on the market.

Would like to see higher res on the new tablet Z since it helps text, but S805 only has 40% higher gpu power than the S800, not sure if it is powerful enough to push a higher res display smoothly? If still using S800, maybe 1080p is still better...

I do hope the new tablet Z has front facing speakers though, now I need it to put it in a stand so that sound is reflected forwards from the side speakers.

according to rency_0722

Shutter priority and aperture priority will be added soon, according to the press release of Z1. As of now, no news yet has been circulating regarding those.

I'm seeing LG G Pro 2 release with such feature.

Edit, I'm guessing the codec for the 4K video is still 264? Btw the note 3 seems to cap the 4k video at 5 min, wonder if this will also be present in the Z1.

Z2? Hmm Sirius is more like a Z1 refresh, i wouldn't give it a Z2 name if i was Sony. They should better save it for the H2 flagship coz probably it will be a lot more better in terms of specs then both Sirius and Z1.

+1
It would be way more confusing to launch this new device with a name such "Z1 Refresh" or "Z1r"... instead of simply dubbing it Z2, and the flagship of Q4 Z3... it would be way more linear and simple.
Or it could be another name for the Q4 flagship... as of now The Z, Z1, Z1 Compact and ZUltra all had the same design language... so if the rumors of a new design language, a mixture of Omnibalance and Arc, will be true for the Q4 deivece it could go with a different letter and start a new line of flagships i.e. Xperia X, XUltra, X1, X1compact and so on...
