SONY XPERIA Rumors 2014

@ vikeviki

Why does Sony have to release a phone at the same time as Samsung to be competitive? Every company has its own release schedule. The Z1 release late but it was the third best selling device in Europe over the holidays. The release schedule doesn't determine the success or failure of the phone.

Sirius is an updated Z1.

@DACHA
when you say a flagship released in july-august do you mean sirius or a totally new flagship? it would be kind of silly to announce updated z1 (sirius) at MWC - basically almost in March, and then abour 4 months later announce a new flagship since you say july-august release.

@DACHA, this is confusing. Only mid-range and tablets on MWC, Q3 for the next flagship, so when is the refresh going to be announced?

Posted by MartenR
@DACHA Xperia Z1 third best selling device across Europe in holiday season? I don't think so. iPhone 5s and 5c along with Note 3 and s4 are almost guaranteed to sell better than Z1 which puts it in fifth.

Posted by DACHA
@ MartenR

Where did you get those numbers from? A right your opinion! My numbers are from a good source. iPhone 5c, even apple called it a failure because it sold way below the expectations. Apple actually lost market share in Europe last quarter and the only reason why it sold more phones than last year in the same time period is the strong performance in the US and Asian market.

@ itsjustJOH

I am just as confused as you are.

I don't have any numbers. I was asking for your source. It seems like your source is reliable so I have to say well done indeed.

Sirius will come earlier than that, and the "next one(s)"... about half a year later.
Code names and basic platform specs are already decided, but there won't be any leaks or rumours at this point.

Posted by Away
Will those tablets be the only ones for the year?

Posted by DexterMoser
@DACHA:
If we consider Sirius not to be a flagship, just a 'refresh', then that doesn't contradict a release at MWC, right?
Ok it also wouldn't be fair to call Sirius a mid range...

Hm I gonna add myself to this general confusion.

^^ That is right! There are 6 months between February and August. Sirius in February and Z2 in August

A bit off topic but good decision by Sony anyway

No more support for my Vaio Pro 13

It was a dead weight for the company.
They can always buy it back and revive it in a big way, should their financial fortunes turn enough, for them to be profiting in the Billions of dollars. Until then, they need to shed as many extra pounds as they can.

Posted by milukugiuniu
@DACHA

AFAIK, Sirius is Z2 and it is going to be released in Mar.

Posted by DexterMoser
^Now that confuses me even more

If Sirius is Z2, is D6503 also Z2? And what's D6603 then?

Posted by vikeviki
I am really confused, what is what.....Any ways there is no option to just wait and watch......

Posted by DACHA
@ milukugiuniu

AFAIK, Sirius is Z1-2

Posted by amirprog
While i respect the info that is shared here, i don't believe that a second 2014 flagship will be announced before IFA. i also don't believe that sirius will be named Z2. both would be bad marketing decisions and cause confusion to consumers.

could there be confusions between walkman and xperia series

Microsoft should buy it.. get rid of the dead weight and rebrand the whole thing as Surface.

@DACHA
AFAIK, Sirius is Z1-2-3-X

BTW
From XperiaBlog
http://www.xperiablog.net/201[....]A+XperiaBlog+%28Xperia+Blog%29
"Sony has updated the Album application to a new build version 5.4.A.0.12, following on from the last 5.3.A.0.24 build. Judging by the jump in number i.e. 5.3 to 5.4 it should be a reasonable update. Sony says that the update brings support for Android 4.4 KitKat (could Sony be launching KitKat firmware sooner than expected?) as well as PlayMemories Online and other software improvements. You can download the apk here. "

Could it be that the 4.4 Kit Kat update will land sooner than expected?

This could explain something:
According to Doomlord at xda there 'will be atleast 5 devices (operator/region variants included) based on the D65xx (Shinano board)...'

How does a company manage to keep its low end and mid end devices secret, but completely reveals its high end devices?

OT

You people asking for Sony to sell VAIO are crazy. For pocket change? They should refocus it, that's all.

Coz high-end's are the most anticipated ones... most peoples don't care about low/mid... and even there's peoples are interested in these high-end's where they won't actually buy any

Agree, VAIO are selling bad coz there's something wrong and Sony should fix it... see what the market want's actually and do it... they should also think about lowering the cost of their laptops to make them compete against other major competitors...

I think Sony might also think about making another lower cost brand as now most peoples want low cost laptops and this is where other's like Lenovo, ASUS, Samsung, Dell, HP is doing well there...

But for me, I liked the idea of having OS X on VAIO laptop... those rumours of and almost deal between Apple and Sony and Steve Jobs was really interested in VAIO line up... they will be a great hit !! at least we will have a 13" laptop with more than 2-3 USB ports

Posted by ascariss
It will be a dark day when the vaio line is sold, I feel the pro 13 might be my last Sony laptop if this is true :/

I have a feeling an 8inch tablet from sony running windows is dead now if the vaio line is sold.

I have updated the album app, feels faster and more responsive than before. I doubt kitkat is imminent, I can see it coming in march at the earliest. I'd rather Sony release proper update with the new camera algorithm rather than rush it and leave things out.

Well Shinano is the common platform for Sirius (D65XX), Castor and Canopus, so considering the different variants that's a reasonable assumption.

When is the third-quarter earnings going to release? I know its today but when today

Posted by randomuser
In 15 hours from now

Posted by sami92a
15 hours ? that´s not today that´s 9 AM my time tomorrow well well

Posted by -XYZ
Don't the rumours suggest that Sony are selling the Vaio division to a Japanese investment firm, while keep a stake?
Cause if that's true, they could still make Vaios, but just have the costs (which is the thing that's killing them) offset.

Posted by Gitaroo
yeah, no company can do the VIAO line justice, all just focus on cramming in all the hardware into a box and call it finish. Anyone seen this before?

Got to hold briefly the new D650x prototype

Its the same width (but with bigger screen) a bit longer (ca 2mm) and bit thinner. Bit lighter (ca 163g?). Otherwise it looks almost the same as Z1 with less bezel

Has stereo sound (seems like speakers on top/bottom) and a LOT nicer sound than Z1 and one hifi option - Hi-Res Audio via USB - you can connect phone to DAC

Android on proto is 4.4.2 and sony SW 17.x (Z1 is 14.x)

Sony SW had some nice new features:
Quick settings are now hidden at first (only notifications) and you can choose either quick settings or notifications.
When you hold the wifi on/off button in quick settings you get the wifi settings - I was waiting for this shortcut
Motion: you can answer the phone by lifting the phone (ala touchwiz) or silence th ringer if you turn it upside down (ala htc)
Smart backlight - keeps screen on when you looking it

Status bar icons are choosable (battery gsp wifi alarm etc)

You can choose between home pages Xperia (normal) or easy - with some big icons (this is kitkat function probably?)

Has the glove mode as Z1 compact and the same tap to wake up as on Z tablet

Camera seems the be same, but it has 4K video recording

Nice! What did you think about the screen quality? Do you think it will be announced at MWC?

Posted by stook
DACHA/randomuser know probably about the announcments
Usually its ca 2 months from prototype to launch

What about display?

Posted by -XYZ
Any ideas if they're going to change the design language after the Sirius? One that is a bit more ergonomic. Same build quality, just a little curvier to fit in the hand better.

Also, have they dialled down the bloody image processing. Its too much. Also, will they add some form of OIS (which will help with low-light imaging)? They really should. They have by far, the best sensor (even if I think its got too many megapixels), but they always f**k it up with too much processing and noise reduction, which murders any and all detail in a photo.

Also, if they're working on a new sensor (with OIS, hopefully), I'd like to hear about that too.
But most important, future updates, reduce the ridiculous heavy handed processing, and OIS in future flagships. I'm pretty much guaranteed to be sticking with the Z(x) Compact line forever. Things like OIS and less aggressive imaging software will only sweeten the deal.

I'll be very sad if Sony sell their VAIO division. My first VAIO was VAIO FX (laptop) that I bought in the year 2000. That laptop still running until today (several years ago, I've changed the battery). From that good experience with VAIO, I've never looked at other brand for desktop and laptop. This is the list of all my Vaios till today.

Vaio FX (year 2000)
Vaio PCV-RX550 (desktop - year 2004)
Vaio S series (laptop- year 2006)
Vaio M1 (all in one with fold-able keyboard with TV tuner - year 2007)
Vaio LA1 (all in one, this is the most beautiful PC ever - year 2009)
Vaio S series (laptop- year 2010)
Vaio P series (pocket laptop)
Vaio L (all in one with 3D display and touchscreen - year 2011)
Vaio Duo 11 (hybrid - year 2012)
Vaio Tap 11 (hybrid - year 2013)

But I agree that Sony has to reduce their VAIO price.

First off Sony Expected to sell about 10 million xperias that quarter.
Second the pc market is on the decline so it is a good move selling the Vaio brand as it has been in loss for several years.
Third if you look at the financial statements apart from the Pc business and Tv Sony seems to be doing well once these restructuring costs are over with and the pc division is sold Sony will be in profit again most likely the only question mark is the Tv division they have to get that into profitability again.
Kaz is doing the right thing Sony can't go on bleeding cash Sony needs to focus on certain products only. You want Sony to survive this has to be done. I don't see pc sales increasing anytime soon. Why do you think Companies like Acer and Asus are in the Mobile market also now, why do you think Lenovo bought Moto? That is the future that is the direction that the world is heading most people don't need a pc they just use the pc to connect to the internet watch youtube and surf fb might as well do it on the go on a mobile device.

Sorry about the rant .

TOKYO (AP) — Sony is bouncing back from losses, posting a 27 billion yen ($266 million) profit for the fiscal third quarter, helped by a weak yen and better sales. Sony also announced it's trying to sell its troubled personal computer business.

The Japanese electronics maker said Thursday the latest results were helped by a favorable exchange rate, improved sales, especially of its smartphones, and the launch of the PlayStation 4 video-game console.

Tokyo-based Sony Corp. suffered a loss of 10.8 billion yen in the October-December quarter of 2012.
Sony reported a 24 percent surge in quarterly sales to 2.41 trillion yen ($23.8 billion).

It says it's talking with Japan Industrial Partners to sell its Vaio PC business, aiming to reach an agreement by the end of March.

///

Anyway, the whole fiscal year 2014 is expect to be in red.

I never understood the hype around Kaz or most CEOs brought in to a company that's in a downward spiral, it's like people expect them to do what Steve Jobs did with Apple in the early '00s.

Posted by smclion102
Forget everything else lets just talk about XPERIA 10millon vs 10.7 million sales this quarter.
SERIOUSLY WTF just 0.7 million in extra sales are you kidding me cant you even beat LG ??
Everybody on this earth knows how important MOBILE & TABLET business is and how much profits these devices bring and yet here SONY is sleeping and day dreaming.
KAZ is a wrong CEO.I have no hopes in Sony anymore.

Posted by Gitaroo
for somebody that is non existence in NA, they did amazing lol. Even LG was available to most carrier.

Posted by mzr7
Lol they are called expectations for a reason you can't go out and say oh randomly 20 million this quarter. Anyway Lg counts the Nexus too btw also Sony expects to sell 50 million in the total of FY14 that seems achievable

Ok guys, have fun! See you round!

40 million Xperia smartphones in the year, without any major presence in the US, not good enough for you? Hahaha

Selling the Vaio, a loss making division, is a bad thing?
Hahaha

It takes balls to cut dead weight and I'm glad Kaz finally decided to make the necessary cuts. Sony needs to streamline and I'm glad they're finally doing just that.

I'm glad you guys aren't investors or senior executives.
